Yushchenko says Ukraine government in state of collapse

Viktor Yushchenko accused Yulia Tymoshenko and opposition parties of attempting a constitutional coup and threatened to call a snap election unless a new coalition was formed.
"If ... a coalition of factions is not created, I will use my right to dismiss parliament and announce early elections," Yushchenko said in a televised statement.
Tymoshenko, however, said the coalition had been broken up by Yushchenko, adding that her party was not looking at any new grouping.
"The president and his office has used every means to ruin the coalition," she told a cabinet meeting. "It is a pity that the president behaves with no responsibility. The coalition split yesterday, by his own decision."
Yushchenko and Tymoshenko have been at odds on many policy issues, and both are believed to be almost certain to stand in a presidential election next year.
Tymoshenko's party joined the opposition after passing a new law curbing presidential powers and boosting those of the prime minister's office yesterday.
The crisis comes amid concern over Ukraine's security. Following the conflict in Georgia, fears are growing that it could be the next target of a Russian drive to reclaim dominance in former Soviet states. Like Georgia, Ukraine has ambitions to join Nato.
Russia drew stern criticism from the US and Europe last week for recognising two separatist Georgian territories as independent states.
The conflict has plunged relations between Moscow and the west to a post-cold war low, and the EU is considering imposing sanctions against Russia.
Ukrainian leaders fear Moscow also wants to punish Ukraine for allying itself to the west, and Yushchenko said only Nato could guarantee Ukraine's independence.

America cannot stop Russia . Because Bush and Co.'s greed has led to bad judgement and our Army is engaged in the illegal occupation of Iraq. And since diplomacy is a word not in Bush and Co.'s vocabulary America is really powerless to do anything. Since Bush and Co. did not listen to the world powers and invaded Iraq illegally why should Russia no do the same. Bush and Co's polices are coming back to bite him on the ass. "Do as I say not as I do" will not apply to Russia. Russia has learned alot from Bush and Co. like how to take advantage of people and use oil as a weapon and how to illegally invade countries. Those Russians are quick studies for sure. Since no one stepped in and tried to make Bush and Co. accountable why should Russia worry? Bush and Co. have made America a laughing stock. America no longer has integrity, or respect, or is trusted by the world thank you Bush and Co. you have made a once great country a 2nd rate country.
I hope we get a president who can make us a great country again, and it ain't McCane. - 3 years ago

The South Ossetia conflict was completely understandable from Russia's point of view, but I find it hard to believe they would find a way to take control of Ukraine short of a civil war, in which both the US and Russia would very quickly both invade the country to create "stability" and drop some laser-guided democracy. This of course, is my worst-case-but-still-realistic scenario.

I'm willing to bet that if any change does occur in Ukraine, it will be more political rather than military (...though I wouldn't rule out a sudden coup). Since Russia is essentially surrounded by volatile nations, it has to be very careful in terms of where and when it commits its forces, especially against a nation that could conceivably give the Red Bear a real fight.
Besides, it's cheaper in both the long and short terms to encourage the installation of a government (...or political faction) that has one's best interests at heart.
And, as history has shown, the Russians are pretty good at that game too...

Hot damn, the tension gets thicker...
I like the question about stability... I'd say the US is about as stable as a house built of bricks on top of a giant pile of brittle sticks. The house looks great, as long as you don't examine its foundation.

from clayjj05 "Russia is grinding their teeth over this one. Georgia. Ukraine. You can only imagine that Poland will be next."
Tremendous irony in this statement. One could easily substitute USA for Russia and describe the USA's arming of Georgia and desire to move missles into the Ukraine and Poland.
So much of what the USA accuses other countries and their leaders is a precise description of what the USA and its leaders themselves are doing in other countries. Watch for it and when you see it, know its name. Projection.

no he's right, thank God we don't have Putin in our office. He would take back what he could--provided he had the resources. Which he doesn't.

Laughable Polish paranoia. As it stands, Poland has absolutely nothing Russia wants.
However when/if this missile site gets built, it will have something Russia DOESN'T want.
You can be paranoid then. (Underscore paranoid). However you'll have no one but America and Poland to blame for it.

Umm so you are saying you can't help your own nonsense and paranoia because you are a Polish American who hates the USSR?
How about actually discussing the issue at hand and telling me what is it that Poland has that the Russian Federation (not the USSR) wants or needs? Thanks.
Otherwise I see no point in your ignorant statement.

Rusia is not entertaining imperialist leanings. The USA, however, most definitely is, and is as usual indulging in mote.eye.beam as the above post demonstrates.
