    • I have probably said this before, but heck,it bears repeating. Does anyone here think that if Palin looked like Bea Arthur that there would be all of this interest? That in itself is a sexist to pick a woman, based on a.) being female and b.) attractiveness. Again its the cult of personality.

I am also quite sick of balancing family and career as being a Presidential qualification. I am a father of 5, who without having finished college rose to be voted in the top 5 Commercial Artists in the Kansas City area, commanding a salary of just at 100k.

I worked my ass off to get to that peak, but I always made sure that family was the center of my universe, and knew it. I ultimately opened my own Ad Agency which I ran from my home office. Why? because it was financially advantageous, but also because I was there at home for my kids, whether one was home with an illness, or needed to be picked up early and of course to be there for them during summer vacation and also just to be dad.
After achieving those things, in January 2006 I was struck down with neurofibroma tumors (benign, but inoperable) up and down my spine, causing intense intractable pain and violent seizures. With me becoming disabled, my wonderful wife of 18 years has supported us solely on her 16k annual walmart salary.

We lost our 3500 sq ft home, luckily my parents have a farm, and they allowed us to place a 1974 14x80 mobile home that cost $2,000.

Many are defeated by these things , but we realize our blessings. Our chief difficulty is working with our younger children to help them understand why their world changed so dramatically, and what is truly important in life.

Though being bed bound, I communicate with all their teachers via email to lend help as needed and to monitor their progress so they know I am involved and care and to let them know that education is the ticket to their future.

Now, I am not trying to self aggrandize since I am certain that so many have been through much worse than I and have risen above.

I mention this all, for myself and all those who have raised families in the most dire of circumstances. Yes we have important experience in our lives, but it is each of our personal experiences, not what I would considered to be fodder for a political campaign.

If her being a hockey mom of 5 is a qualification for being Vice President, then America is full of many that are even more qualified by virtue of the obstacles they have raised their families in.

And for those who don't dwell in shallow waters, Attractiveness isn't a qualification either.

    • Has anyone else noted or commented on how odd it is that McCain was decrying Obama for being a celebrity, yet they are about to piss themselves with euphoria over what they call their new "Rockstar"?

    • She is more of the same. She couldn't even tell the truth right out of the gate, and the media called her on it. She tried to lie about the Bridge to Nowhere, Obama's tax reform (which is still better than McCain/Palin's) and his experience in the Senate, and LIED IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE COUNTRY. It doesn't matter what cockamamie excuse Republicans try to make saying they have this in the bag.

Face it, she lied to get a rouse.
She said it, she can't unsay it.

(check the AP story on her 'creative embellishments')

    • MacCain got his " Elli May Clampett/Terminator" without asking Arnold.

I did not know how the Republicans were going to bring some life into the election program (it was looking like curdled milk for the longest time).

Sarah "terminator" is straight out of central casting and ready to skin bears for breakfast.

I am a firm believer in the Jed Clampett (Beverly Hillbillies) America and was waiting for the next Jed Clampett to vote for. He would be a Trust worthy, honest , straight shootin and Bible believing frontier man like Abraham Lincoln. I could not have imagined a better man for the job of V. P. since all our war heros are too old and or dead.
"Rosy The Riveter" and aging Uncle Sam MacCain just might do the job, and bring some pride back to American Soil.

OR, we could just give it to "Mr. New Deal Islamic America Guy" and hang with our homies in the World Hood and forget about that old mean America all together.
Socialism is the latest trend anyway and individuals are far too unruly to know what is good for them after all. We should vote for who ever can draw the biggest crowd at a rally, yes this is the best idea yet.

The AP is completely wrong about taxes.

The AP is being disingenuous about the laws they mention. Did Obama AUTHOR those laws? That's what Palin was talking about. She didn't say he didn't do anything. She said he hadn't AUTHORED laws. My reading of the AP article doesn't answer that question.

The AP is being disingenuous about earmarks. We know that Alaska asked for them. We know that Ted Stevens was a master of it. What they don't say is what she herself did. My understanding is that she took Stevens on.

Don't just take the AP's word. Get the facts for yourself.

    • Was it just me or did that seem like a really long episode of "Desperate Housewives"?

If I had only read transcripts of the speech without any idea who either said it,wrote it, or who it was for, I would assume it was from Ann Coulter or Michelle Malkin.

Is this really what we expect from a VP?
Is this how we expect her to make decisions and handle International affairs?

      So much mockery
      So many put downs
So much complaining with very little plan of action
Really, was that all she had in her arsenal?
Is she really the McCain/Republican's answer to H. Clinton?
I feel that Clinton is much more articulate, forthright, confident and no where near as bitchy, catty or condescending. Small town politics indeed!

    • I still want to know why no one has asked her the question that if she is so very pro family and so very concerned about her family as a "hockey mom" how she could have said "yes" to the VP nomination when she knew it was going to toss her pregnant, unmarried 17 year old daughter in the middle of the public spotlight? Wouldn't a parent who truly cared about their kids pass by this purely political opportunity to focus on their family? Typical right wing repug "do as I say not as I do" politics.

    • The Republican attack machine was in full force last night.

First, we would like to give a huge thank you to Karl Rove. Way to dust off those fear-mongering tactics. I think I heard 9/11 12+ times by my account during yesterdays pep rally.

Second, bravo to Sarah Palin. I mean it takes a quick study to be able to go from pure annonimity to the slash and burn politics of the right wing. What a delivery! But wait, weren't you supposed to talk about your views on how to make this country better? What about the economy? What about the complex international landscape? What about jobs? What about healthcare? Oh, thats right, we need to 'know' you first.

After her speech, I went back and viewed some of the democratic convention I had stored on my DVR. Lets forget the players and the polices for a second. In the end, they are politicians. What struck me as the most glaring difference was the fact that the Republican convention has such an negative tone, while if you watch the Dems it was very positive.

In all my years, I have never seen something positive happen when you get a bunch of negative energy in one room. Tell me what YOU CAN do, not what you think someone else can't. Tell me how YOU can help me, not how someone else will hurt me. Tell me what YOUR PLAN is, not spend 4 days trying to shoot holes through someone else's plan.

Both parties are guilty of it to some degree, but DAMN, the Republicans have taken it to a whole new level.

We are tired as a nation after 8 years of George Bush. Give me some new ideas. Give me some positive thoughts. Give me some accountability. Give me something other than war hero, 9/11, gun-toting hockey mom Republicans, please.

    • Ok Ok. We got it. John McCain is a war hero. Nobody denies that...She's only been VP for a few days and she comes out like she's run the place for years. All I got was that she's a hockey mom, she married some dude from high school, and that she's done some stuff in Alaska. Nothing about the economy, which is Americans' #1 concern.
Her speech sounded more like that of an bitchy high school cheerleader talking smack about the other team than a well-crafted vice-presidential speech with clear points on key issues...
I'd recognize a good speech when I hear one, democratic or republican. This was no speech, it was a bitter rant.
Let's just hope that people are smarter than that and won't fall for this...Then again, all the old white folks in the audience heard what they wanted...The cameraman was actually looking for minorities and had a hard time finding them...

    • As far as I can tell, we're supposed to vote for McCain because:

      a) He was a war vet,
      b) He hates Barack Obama,
      c) He was a POW and,
      d) He found a nasty woman to spew his lies for him.

I keep waiting for the day when I find out what McCain actually supports and plans to do for America. So far, all I know about his political views is that they are all defined by Barack Obama. We never hear anything about McCain's views until Obama does something or says something. Then McCain reacts by letting us know how much he doesn't like it. Funny thing is, he never seems to offer any alternatives of his own.

Who's lead is he going to follow if he's elected? How will his counter-punch method of politics work when there's no one left to counter-punch and he's sitting all alone in the Oval Office?

I know what Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin oppose; what do they support? Or is bad-mouthing a political opponent the only pony in their one-trick show?

I don't speak for "all liberals;" just myself. And all my bullshit is entirely my own and no one else's. My content is 100% original and I'll thank you to not give credit for my ideas away to some unidentified "liberal" or some vague worldwide liberal conspiracy. I may be a lot of things but un-original is not one of them. :-)

Personally, I find a complete lack of substance in all of John McCain's policy positions. The two words I would use to most accurately characterize his stance on just about everything is vague and ambiguous.

For example, John McCain goes on and on about his experience and how critical it is in international matters. And yet, there is no foreign policy section on his web site. There's a section on Iraq that describe his love for G.W. Bush's war and there's a section on National Security that discusses the need for more militarism and even more money to be handed over to his pals in the defense industry. But that's it.

Similarly, when I look at his web site about the economy, it goes on and on about how his policies will do this, how his policies will do that, and how his policies will do the other thing. But there's hardly anything that tells us about those policies.

I'm opposed to John McCain because he is a bought-and-paid for lackey who cannot possibly lead America while dancing on the end of the puppet-strings of his corporate masters. Which is the same exact reason I am opposed to Barack Obama.

When it comes down to it, the only thing Barack Obama has going for him in my book is that he's the only politician who had it right about our illegal and unjustified invasion, attack, and occupation of Iraq. Everything else about him is just more of the same-o, same-o.

    • khromadjo: Here here! When I think of the principles that birthed this country and look at it now, I can do nothing but weep. Nothing but HATE runs it. What have we done? We have all sacrificed our country's future for political party. George Washington believed and stated as much in his last speech that political parties were the precept to despotism. How prescient the Founding Fathers were, and how ashamed we should all be for totally spitting on all they believed in. Sarah Palin is a phony, just like McCain, and Obama, and Biden and the whole lot of them who sat and watched while Fascists hijacked an election and continued to do it because they got away with it the first time. Our Republic died a long time ago, and now Americans clap and swoon over their chosen "savior" while condoning the very precepts that brought us to this point. And as you stated, Obama/Biden may not be as hopeless, but they are still bought and paid for and still warmongers, and still unable to stand up to the Fascism that has overshadowed this country as it needs to be stood up to. The problem isn't "government" the problem is the lack of true "governing." We need a new Contitinental Congress and a redrafting of the constitution. Any body up for that?

I don't think they are phonies. I think they really believe that what they have in mind is the best course of action for the country. Those that are in political parties are not the phonies.

It's the voters who are the phonies. Voters decide who goes where and why and they get caught up (majority) in their own phony perceptions of parties. They created the parties.

Want to uncreate them? Speak to the voters not the parties themselves. It starts with the individual, not the group.

The constitution doesn't need to be drafted it needs to be adhered to.

    • The general consensus on this thread is that Gov. Palin (henceforth to be dubbed VP Hockey Mom by Fox News, I'm sure) is just a shill, doesn't know what she's talking about, has no clue what a steel tariff is let alone what an intelligent use of them would look like, etc.

      I agree.

But go to any Michigan Flea Market and ask ANYONE what a "steel tariff" is and what Gov. Palin, excuse me, VP Hockey Mom's position on steel tariffs is...and they will readily admit they have no idea. They don't know what one is, how it works and have no idea what VP Hockey Mom's position on that particular issue is.

And then they will tell you that they fully intend to vote for her come November because she understands the needs of working families AND because they can't stand those socialists that want to raise taxes.

When asked what exactly Obama's tax plan is...they will say, "To raise taxes on us and businesses!" When asked to provide specific details they will admit they have no idea, but they "just know" how those liberals are!

Rove (love him or hate him) knows that Americans are stupid.

They don't cast votes based on steel tariffs. They have no idea what they even are (not us, of course!)

They don't vote based on actual tax plans. (Couldn't understand the complexity of a small tax hike on shares sold if you tried)

      They vote solely on archetypes.

Bush slapped on a flannel shirt and a pair of cowboy boots....and was re-elected TWICE and not a single supporter of his had a clue what his actual policies were.

Elections are won and lost based on images.

Gov. Palin and her telegenic family look like they showed up to film a ABC FAMILY CHANNEL pilot tentatively titled, "Vice President Hockey Mom."

As a TV show we'd all think it would be filled with over the type cliches: The former beauty queen Hockey Mom turned PTA turned VP pick? The husband that looks like McDreamy and works as a union member? The Down Syndrome baby? The pregnant teen daughter? The son shipping off to Iraq?

As a TV show it would probably be #1 on Sunday's at 8pm.

Few voters really have a clue about actual nuts and bolts policy....but they LOVE the VP Hockey Mom show, don't they?

And if they had to choose between VP Hockey Mom Sundays at 8pm on the Family Channel or the scary black Muslim with the terrorist wife that hates America who wants to issue arrest warrants in Iraq instead of winning a war....which will they pick?

    • The Constitution is fast on its' way to being shelved and shredded. George Washington warned against any division, any partisanship, and now look at us. Our (predominantly) two party system has RUINED America. It's made us divided, anti-social and judgmental.

Republicans are effective at being complete despots and spin-meisters, as opposed to the pandering, clouded Democrats, who while eloquent fail to grow a backbone when backed against the wall. This morning Joe Biden went on the defensive about Palin and her media coverage, calling it outrageous. What utter spineless bull that is. The SAME scrutiny was placed on Hillary Clinton. The difference is, Clinton doesn't purport to be as fundamentalist, backwards-thinking or HYPOCRITICAL like Palin.

      PANDERING IS PANDERING, MR. BIDEN.

It's the media's right to cover any aspect of a candidate, but because they're in the pockets of the government, they will just kowtow to them.

I tell you what; go ahead and vote to upkeep your capitalist slave masters, vote McCain/Palin. See if they really give two shits about any of you who aren't white and make over 5 million dollars (middle class to McCain).

And as for the Democrats, voting Obama/Biden may be more hopeful, but don't hold your breath.

Voting for Bob Barr is a wasted vote; this is the idiot who went gangbusters after Bill Clinton, only to be unfaithful in his own marriage. HYPOCRITE. He is responsible for further division in this country with the Defense of Marriage Act.

Sure, Ron Paul thinks this war is stupid, but he's still opposed to freedoms for many of us on the fringe of the mainstream. He is not a hypocrite, but I don't feel any safer giving him my vote.

There are a few other smaller candidates, but basically, it won't matter because of the bipartisan CHOKEHOLD we've been caught up in.

Lastly, the Republicans CANNOT PRETEND THAT 'BIG GOVERNMENT' IS THE PROBLEM. ALL GOVERNMENT UNDER BOTH PARTIES IS THE PROBLEM. That includes them. And especially them. All of a sudden, when there are more Democrats holding office, they are blaming them, and some of these sponge-headed buffoons are actually falling for it.

      Seek true egalitarianism NOW!

I was impartial in actually defending keeping children out of it, and then see her act hypocritically by bringing them into it. I do fear for my country though, because she has done what the Democrats to now have failed to do: energize the REAL base of their party. If anyone thinks Joe Biden does that they are delusional. Dennis Kucinich would have done that. The ONLY one with the guts to call for impeachment, and the ONLY one to actually stand up to corporations like Monsanto which we will need to do in order to save this planet and ourselves. I am thoroughly disgusted with ALL POLITICS and the playing that goes on, and I am tired of being painted into a corner to have no choice but to vote for the lesser of two evils in this. Her speech though packed with lies however, energized the people they needed to bring them out to vote. Pray America.

I am appalled by the harsh accusation - "Any mother who would use her sick baby to get votes is despicable."

First of all, Goversor Palins beautiful son is not sick. He has Down Syndrome.

Respect for diversity is a zero sum game. It should be extended to all human beings, including babies like Trig with Down Syndrome, and all people with different abilities.

Secondly, Palin did not "use her sick son to get votes." She introduced her family and parents, and Trig is the newest addition to her family. What is despicable is accusing Palin of "using her sick son" or "using her family" when all she did was the same thing Obama and Biden did when they also brought their children on stage at their convention, just like all candidates do in most elections.

All politicians want their family up there with them to celebrate. Would not any parent?

Governor Palin has the same right to have her family there and introduce them with pride as any mother would. And, just as Senator Obama and his wife have, on many ocassions, and at the Democratic Convention.

Disagree with Governor Palin on the issues, and I do on many, but accusing her of exploiting her children, and the other despicable things written, particularly about Trig, "should not be part of our politics" as Senator Obama said.

It is disturbing that some people do not understand that babies with Down Syndrome have every right to live and have happy fulfilled lives as any other human being born in the world. Down Syndrome is not an illness, it is difference in genes than the majority. Children with Down Syndrome and their families face challenges, but they are gifted with an open heart and an inspiring ability to give and receive pure love and joy that can teach everyone.

In Nazi Germany, children with Down Syndrome.and other mental and physical disabilities were not deemed to have the right to be alive and were the victims of torturous medical experiments and death.

I hope people who do not yet know about the joyful gifts and luminous love that children with Down Syndrome bring to their parents and relatives will consider learning more about people with this genetic difference. A good novel I read this summer THE MEMORY-KEEPERS DAUGHTER by Ann Pagett is about the challenges and loss a fictional family faced when the father chose to give away one of his twin babies born with Down Syndrome and tell her mother that her daughter died in childbirth. Research other non-fiction and fiction books about people with Down Syndrome out there.

    • I read the first several posts on this thread and almost fell out of the chair laughing. NEVER have I seen soo many off base responses. IT sounded like MSNBC or any of the other dishonest media outlets.
Sarah Palin hit a home run last ight. She effectively put Comrade Obama on the shelf and relegated him to inconsequencial status. She did it without sliming, without lies and without hatred something the Democrat leadership in this election and their media lackeys doen't know how to do.
Palen stands for change. Her record shows this. She has more executive experience than both members of the Democrat ticket She also has more sense and more accomplishments.
Funny that the lead post said she is anti feminist. For years we have been hearing from feminists that a woman can have a career, children and family. One comes along that has these things and she is castigated as anti- feminist. Lies. The tragedy is that the so-called feminist groups don't come to her defense.
The left is the most disengenuous group in this country. If we had an honest media in this country their lies, accusations and hatred would be exposed for what it is.
Palen is a breath of fresh air. She is what the Dem ticket is runing on but isn't.

As a Socialist, I find your characterization of Barack Obama as Comrade laughable. He and his bag of corporate sponsors are a joke to most Socialists. To real liberals, the true, substantive differences between the politics of Barack Obama and John McCain are indistinguishable. Both are doing everything they can to help their favorite corporations exploit and abuse the working people of America.

Few things in life are more humorous to me than political hyperbole and the biggest political hyperbole in America is the false notion that Democrats are liberals. Democrats aren’t liberals; they’re just ever so slightly less conservative than Republicans.

Republicans and Democrats aren't engaged in some sort of holy war for the soul of America; they're trying to carve out as much power for themselves as they possibly can so they can reap the benefits of the corruption. Everything else is blue smoke and mirrors designed to recruit more players than the other team.

The Republicans and Democrats don't have any solutions for what's wrong with America because they ARE what's wrong with America.

    • I actually watched most of the RNC tonight, and it was exactly what I expected from them. The only speakers who had the decency not to blatantly attack the other party/Obama were Huckabee and Romney. Even they didn't really say much of anything at all. However, I applaud them for not stooping to dirt slinging to rally their members.

Guiliani's speech was a complete joke. Not only did he blatantly mislead and misinform the Republican members of the audience and the TV viewers, but he shamelessly attacked Obama and his camp much to the pleasure of the crowd. Palin has more experience than all the Dems combined? Yeah right Rudy.

Palin's speech did not tell me anything about her that would convince me she is ready to be a vice president. About 50% of her speech was attacking Obama and the other half was bad jokes. I didn't hear her discuss any policies or plans for the country when she was in office. Just crowd pleasing and pandering pretty much. I would have really liked to hear her discuss policies instead of cracking jokes and badmouthing the Democrats.

What's the difference between a Hockey Mom and a pitbull? Better question: Who cares?

The Republican Party really missed an oppertunity to tell America what it's really about tonight, and instead showed them what they do best- Attack, attack, attack. They could have taken the high road and let independents know what kind of presidency they would run, and give them a reason to vote for them other than the "We have a woman VP" gimmick. Overall, this day was a hit with conservatives and not many other people.

    • I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought her speech was nothing but a role play, auditioning in reading a script speech for an acting part to hollywood hill! It reminds me of shows like HSN when the saleswoman tries to convince audience through television that every product they introduce from their studio is the best in the world! That if you don't act fast in calling now to order it, it will be all sold out so act fast! And, that there won't be any special offer like the ones they're giving out ever again. Funny thing is that they always tend to do it in a calm way athough they're really trying to attack ya just as Palin did her speech. Weird, but that was exactly how I felt watching Palin's speech on Wed night. I'm not trying to diss her as a woman or as a mother because I'm also a mom. My point in all this is that I just wasn't sold about her speech at all as what the media and CNN portrays it. I just see it as another trick from Republicans trying to lure innocent victims into beleiving their lying crap again! As a woman, I certainly would not agree with Palin on many issues as far as anti-femanist, anti-rights, anti-abortion although I'm a Christian myself, and many other issues in that matter. Being a Christian, I would never allow myself to discriminate against those who don't see eye to eye with me in opposing abortion or against those who choose to be gay/lesbians. You just can't simply force a person into following your beliefs just as much as trying to force one to go to church. As my mother had always said to me, what good will that do in one's faith if being force into religion when their faith is not there? That goes the same in trying to out-law abortions and other things that Palin has in mind. Every person has a right to make a choice and to choose what is right for them, especially when it comes to a woman's body! Whatever one chooses to do, let it be a lesson for them or let them learn their own consequences. Don't be so conservative, thinking that a person must be a monster or horrible because they choose to make choices that are outside the faith circle! In that case what message are we sending to others who are not with faith? How does that portray the image of being a Christian or an Evangelical, etc.? I keep getting that vibe from Evangelicals and conservatives that their opinions and ways of thinking are only the right way. Either you have a strong religion moral as they do or you are not welcome! To me, that just sends a bad message about Republican conservatives. Evidence proved itself when said at the RNC repeatedly over and over again, liberals are wrong and conservatives are right! That's faulse accusations on the American people, how dare they look down upon the American pple!

    • Wow, she has done great with the sit, beg and roll over commands! Let's see how well Palin does at jumping through those debate hoops. I am counting down the days we see her on TV standing across from Joe Biden.

    • She's still not going to win.

I like that the day before Palin's epic speech, McCain's team goes ludicrous to the media saying they're breaking her down, giving her a hard time.
What a great time for the media to prove that isn't true on the next night, the night of her big speech, and let's all declare she did "Great", quote stupid hockey mom quotes, and still not talking about shit.
That is my current midnight rant.

Read the constitution! It's short. Very short. Print it out. It won't take long.

They had no choice but to acknowledge what everyone saw. Some of your moronic heroes kept up the good fight though. Don't worry . . . Olbermann will tell you what to think tomorrow.

    • Regardless of how you feel about her, I definitely think her nomination has spiced things up and given the Republican ticket some energy. They need it to match Obama's support.

    • She sure is intense and has a lot of spunk in her. But I will not support someone who believes that the Iraq War is a "task from God" and pro-creationism in public school and doesn't believe that global warming is a serious issue that is perpetuated by man.

I just can't wait for this election to be ovveerrrr

    • It is interesting that they pulled this, since this is one of the biggest stories in the history of American politics. You would think that it deserved to be seen at least as long as post like "Palin is a Milf" those posts were on the front page for days and still are.

One interesting thing about this thread is that there is a lot of fair and honest and interesting posts from many liberals or democrats. There was actually some room for honest discussion and not just "attacks" from both sides. Did some of these opinions that were actually fair and not slanderous play a role in the removal of this thread. Posts like crob80227, who's comments might have been seen as defeatist, when in reality they were honest and fair takes. Just some thoughts.
