Haiti facing storm 'catastrophe'

Haiti faces a "catastrophe" after being hit by a series of storms in recent weeks, President Rene Preval has said.

Three storms in less than 21 days have killed 170 people and forced thousands to flee their homes in the Caribbean nation, officials say.

The latest, Tropical Storm Hanna, could prove even more deadly than one that killed more than 3,000 people in 2004, Mr Preval warned.

    • Unfortunately, Haiti really has everything going against it. The heart wrenching video shows the anguish & sorrow of its citizens, without any real coordinated aid saving them or effort helping their dire situation. I have a dry bed to sleep in at night, but realize that's because I was born in America with the odds in my favor & what we expect in a wealthy country. However, there’s not a whole lot separating any of us from being in their predicament, other than the luck of the draw from Mother Nature. For that, I am filled with as much gratitude as I am sadness knowing that too many people face too many struggles in a world where it shouldn’t be the case as often as it is, mostly because it’s not newsworthy.

    • If these storms caused this much damage I sure hope Ike stays just north of Haiti like forecasted. There is no telling at this point but this one is a Cat 4 now and over open water so we'll see.

    • And we moan here in the UK about the bad weather. I can't begin to imagine how desperate the people of Haiti must be - as if life wasn't difficult enough there already.

    • This is horrible. Why isn't the mainstream media reporting on this? The world's attention needs to be focused on the plight of Haiti.

The country was already in desperate need of aide from the global community.

    • I feel foolish....sitting here in this position, and seeing these human beings in Haiti suffering. Not only do they have to deal with the lack of food where they are. But, now they have to suffer at the hands of nature. Again, I feel like a fool for looking down on my current situation, knowing thay so many others have it worse than I do.

    • I regret seeing Haiti in trouble. People who love that country, for his great history connected to Toussaint l’Ouverture’s exploits ( In 2009 It will come out his autobiographical movie, produced by Danny Glover, starring Angela Basset and others good american actors) must reflect upon the difficult life conditions of Haitians.

    • It's not just Haiti which is affected. There's severe flooding in the Dominican Republic too. And Hanna's now forecast to move over the northern Bahamas and is due to hit the US coast near the North Carolina-Virginia border at the weekend.

    • This News: Current looks at what happened this time last year when Hurricane Dean unleashed its wrath on Jamaica and Haiti.

I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for those living out there right now.
