Why disasters are getting worse

... It is tempting to look at the line-up of storms in the Atlantic (Hanna, Ike, Josephine) and, in the name of everything green, blame climate change for this state of affairs. But there is another inconvenient truth out there: We are getting more vulnerable to weather mostly because of where we live, not just how we live.

With very little research time, I was able to find out that over the last 300 years the New Orleans area has been affected by about 97 hurricanes, tropical storms, etc. ("catagorigations" of storms intensity is a technological development of recent history so there was no way of effectively comparing then from now)
There was a significant human loss over that period--so GraveLehr, I might have to agree with you.
So if the area of New Orleans is struck about every three years with something--Duh?
I know agricultural chemicals from the entire Mississippi basin can ultimately end up affecting the delta--Duh?
Let's still build below sea level--That sounds OK!
Now, ask my son why he lives west of a fault line-about a mile west--really close to the Pacific--Kids, I love you all.

...Odd...
Ever since the 1900's human deaths as relates to disaster intensity has dropped.
Sounds like a bunch of fear-mongering to me.

I notice a lot outdoor sport type magazines etc. spreading the idea that man can "conquer" nature.
All I can say is Mother Nature is female---you can only pinch her and poke her for so long---before she decides to get up and kick your A$$ like it has never been kicked before.

"aggressively shitting in our front yards" BRILLIANT! If it wasn't so sad and true I'd be laughing my ass off right now!!!

While some of the perception may be due to nearly instant reporting worldwide, the fact remains, that humans are actually one of the dumbest species out there.
Greed has turned our backyards into toxic landfills, and we are aggressively shitting in our front yards. More frequent erratic violent storms coupled with droughts and floods will lead to uncertain growing seasons, crop failures, and millions if not billions of climate refugees.
Great article, Pericles! - 3 years ago

The "pleasant tone" of all the observations to this article made me pause.
If every issue facing the advance of humanity could be presented in this format where people of varying backgrounds and persuasions could calmly propose solutions to tackle a general problem, it would make this old guy feel like life has a chance.
So is "political hostility" just a result of how the problem is presented and lack of solutions just a product of some egomaniac fearing not getting the credit?

I forgot to mention one thing that can be actively done.
I've heard that alot of the storms around today are created by the vibes people are sending out or emitting sub consciously. I found this interesting and since have been testing it out when we get a storm here in Texas.
If you go with it you can help whip it up.
If you ask it to do you no harm and to move somewhere where there will be no distruction I think it has the capability to shift, it has done so all four times for me in the last month or so..weird i know but I think there is a solid base here..
thoughts create our enviroment..

I believe we are in the process of an awakening.
Where whatever needs to happen in order for people to change is happening. We on the other hand are also bearing witness to many great and evolutionary changes.May the balance be kept at all times.
And love light and Unity ignited in all.
Best of it all our ways.

The author forgot to mention the historical data reference on the number and intensity of storms. I do not disagree with the data on population increase, that's a given. Over-population is definately a part of the enviromental impact that we place on our planet. We no longer need 10 children to work on the farm. So why do some people feel the need to contribute so heavily to the gene pool? We are supposedly the intelligent animal. At some point we must stop congratulating ourselves on this evolutionary accomplishment and start proving it with action.

I totally agree. Areas with "waterfront" property and what was once swamp-and-delta now turned farmland, have more people and more "valuable" property, thus the storms kill more and cause higher valued damage.
I for one welcome our new weather overlords and wish them only the best of luck, but that they please keep it to a low roar, and play in the oceans, not on land.

I am always amazed when I see evidence of how we started such a negative chain reaction, which will probably destroy the ecosystem unless we think of something fast.
How many other organisms destroy their own environment?

I would say any animal devoid of sufficient predation will multiply its numbers as long as food holds up.
The first time the food supply has an "adjustment" and the unchecked special numbers have increased to an unsafe biomass level, there will be hell to pay.
I probably should add the environment itself is sometimes the ultimate predator. Man has been able to modify his relationship with it, all other species have to take their lumps with it.
Of course, there-in lies the human dilemma, have we increased our numbers to dangerous levels and irreversibly modified this world to make the environment hostile enough to be our own predator?
