I haven't seen anything about this on the news or even here on Current.

Basically to make a long story short ... Russia gave the US 21 days from 28th of August to remove its ships from the Black Sea ... looks like we are trying to provoke a war.

Under the Montreux Convention, signed in 1936, the warships can only stay in the Black Sea for 21 days. So it looks like the US will be breaking international law if we keep our ships in the area much longer. Possibly being seen as an act of war ...

    • I love all the Bush and Co. and "republican" horse crap. There is a larger picture here that none of us see. A path we are going to have to go down. One that will draw us into a battle we will not walk away from.
"Liberals" are as much to blame for this as the neo-cons. It's interesting that no one ever points out the stuff that Clinton (Liberal Messiah) did. He sold our nuclear secrets to China. An ally to the Russians. He stopped the Sea Snake program that would have offset the Sunburn missile the Russians had and now we are 10yrs behind the Russians as it pertains to anti-ship missile technology.
Step off your high horses and look at the facts. Dems AND Reps are a mess. American is as screwed up as the rest of the human race.

    • The Coast Guard is in the Black Sea. That makes about as much sense as putting The National Guard in Iraq.

      Oh wait...

    • Averymore calm down old man, the USA is not being pressured, the USA has already signed on to the Montreux Convention, the USA MUST leave the area.

What is the value of treaties with a country which is so short on honour? Being Canadian and having grown up watching how the USA runs roughshod over treaties with my country, I can only encouraqe others to resist the rapacious embrace of the USA. At the very least the USA must abide by it's obligations.

This obliges the USA warships to leave the area, will the pig in the white house honour the treaties signed by the USA, or does that piece of shit consider this treaty as he considers his country's constitution, "a goddamned piece of paper"?

    • Also I always thought that the Coast Guard was only to be used to patrol and protect our coast line. What the hell are they doing in the Black Sea?

    • We were a super power when we were the only ones who had nuclear weapons, but that was a long long time ago. Did it ever occur to anyone, how this must compare to the old Roman Empire which when deep in debt invaded other countries and used their booty to prop up the coffers in Rome, Well I kind of think that with trillions of dollars in debt, is it possible that these NeoCons are planning the same tactics?

    • A draft yoiu won't see, or don't you remember Vietnam. Forcing people to kill people for no good reason except greed does not work, thank God. America has to real in the Pentagon and the war machine of Bush and Co. and Repelican party. Study what was said by Eisenhower about the penatgon. This type of American agression has to be stopped or America is on a course heading for its own destruction. Bush and Co. has put the country in the trillion dollar deficit with it's illegal invasion of Iraq, Banks are failing, our credit rating as a country is going down, foreign investment is drying up all of the good jobs have gone to foreign countries the average American is losing his home, and his debt is mounting. The middle class is being destroyed, America will soon be broke both financially and morally. America is fast becomming a paper tiger. We have the worst leader in the history of the country, and our country is in worse shape no than when it was during the great depression. Forget about taking over the world, America does not have the resources, what America really needs is a good leader with a brain to pull us out of this mess. And it ain't John McCane. The last thing we need is a senile, grumpy war vetran, with a chip on his shoulder in control of the Armies of America.

    • Robroy1:

American influence is turning to direct American aggression. The Bush administration is not trying to start another cold war, it is trying to ignite a hot one with Russia. The Bush administration has got to go--and that means forgetting about McSame and Sarah et al. We need a leader not hell-bent on control or destruction!

    • AntiFascistCanuck" said,

"It seems to me that too many commentators here fail to understand the concept of treaty obligation."

      Do they? What treaty?

Entrance to the Black Sea is controlled by Turkey.

You may recall the article above included these words:

"Under the Montreux Convention, signed in 1936 the warships can only stay in the Black Sea for 21 days."

The US is a signatory to that same Treaty.

As everyone but apparently you understands - there is no valid reason that the US can't honor "one's commitments" exactly as was done in the Berlin Airlift.

I know some canadians and brits - they spell that word the same way the brits do - "honour."

      But you're a canadian? Right..

    • What is the matter with honoring one's commitments?

It seems to me that too many commentators here fail to understand the concept of treaty obligation. Are you prepared to nuke it out with Russia? Over your failure to live up to your own country's treaty?

The Russians have been saying for years now that If attacked by modern smart bombs and navigational systems they will go to tactical nukes.

What is the good of a draft in the face of a nuclear firestorm? There will be no country left for you or I.

    • Us did that to show Russia that it has balls and it can't be bullied but this is bad for everyone because if it escalates the Chinese are going to join the fight they have to to protect their vital interest. then to borrow from senator McCain "my friends" we are fucked.

    • If war with Iran & Russia start, that might force the next president of the United States to impose a draft, I dont see how we can deal with Iran with out a draft yet alone Russia.
      Afghanistan + Iraq + Iran + Russia= Draft

    • Prijedor:

scratch out iraq and iran. We will station all of our troops in Afghanistan and fight our way to moscow. If we go to war with them which we wont. The draft will start, and we wont have to fight girly style like we had to in Iraq. It will be ww2 style combat.

here is a thought why the fuck would they use nuclear bombs?

We have twice as many as they do, that would just mean instant death from both sides. If they want to fight they wont push the button. Even the communist are smarter than that emil. jesus

Why the fuck wouldn't Russia pass on a chance to take out the ENTIRE USA army with no civilian US casualties?

This is a retarted fantasy discussion, I just wanted to point out to clayjj that even here he can't make sense. Inavade Russia from Afghanistan? LOL! Clayjj should get a time machine and give that brilliant plan to Hitler! The last bozo who wanted to fix Russia.

And Communists? What Communists?! Like, totally, JESUS, desire!

    • Do you ever get the feeling that something truly nasty is going on behind your back and when you turn there's nothing there, but that feeling still won't go away?
That's how I'm feeling about this right now.

    • Just hope that America leaves. There is only one way out if Russia wants to be nasty, it can easily box the American ships in. I think America will leave, time will tell.

    • This is an obvious move form the Bush House. They want to provoke Russia. Why do you think they have been falling over themselves to "protect" Georgia? They figure if we are involved in a third war we will vote for McCain.

Also the neo cons love war. They can't get enough of it.

    • Is it only obvious to us that the United States is trying to wage another Cold War? I don't think they know what they are getting themselves into, like they ever do, but it should be a bigger electoral issue as people are concerned.
