Back in Baghdad for the first time this year, I was consumed by the issue of change. What's different, I would ask almost every Iraqi I met. "What about you, what do you see that's new?", they would query in their turn. So here, in a few paragraphs, is a summary of my answers. Some things have changed for the better, others for the worse. Let's start with the positive...

    • I really felt that Bush has done the Americans a great injustice by going to war with Iraq. He has single-handedly garnered the resentment and hatred of many from all over the world towards USA when the world should be resenting Bush alone. In Iraq, if there is anything that has changed, it has to be the sentiment of Iraqis from humialiation to deeply seated resentment for America. And all these, no thanks to Bush.

    • US Soldier in video:
"A person can be loyal to his country without being loyal to the people who run his country. I have faith in my chain of command and my leaders but, basically, I think we're in a stupid, pointless war because a lot of politicians either, a) can't admit that they were wrong or, b) are making a lot of money off of this war."
He speaks for many, one would have to believe.

    • News anchor: "So sir, what do you see that's changed this year?"

Iraqi Citizen: "There are tons more dead civilians, and my arm is gone."

New Anchor: "So, you're not happy with the surge?"

      Iraqi Citizen: "Fuck you."
