Nearly 3 million people are without power in the Houston area as Hurricane Ike slams the Texas coast.

It will likely be a while before electricity returns. CenterPoint Energy says it could take weeks before all the power in the nation's fourth-largest city was restored.

    • Texans are a different breed. Some stayed to keep the house livable, and the ones who left wanted back in the next day with a truck full of goodies from Home Depot. They love to bull through difficulty and get things done.

But no A/C in that heat? Not me.

    • The storm was one mph under Category 3 strength. I am one of the fortunate in Houston who had power restored today.

I will try to post some video of the damage and debris here.

    • Massive Ike was headed right for us San Antonians and all we got were some drizzles. Crazy. (That's how big Texas is, I guess.)

The sunnavabish took an unpredictable turn taking it directly over more heavily-populated Galveston/Houston. Luckily "only" as a Cat. 2). I think they'll be fine, lots of destruction and power issues though.

    • After the ridiculousness of Katrina, this Texas sized Hurricane Ike doesn't concern me very much?

Bless them. They'll be fine. Surely the government isn't going to just leave them hanging.
