The product, Obama Waffles, was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the Values Voter Summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.
Republican Party stalwarts Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney were among speakers at the forum, which officials said drew 2,100 activists from 44 states.

If one wants to fight dirt with dirt, how about a video showing McCain not remembering how many homes he has, not being able to remember what he thought about insurance funding Viagra and not birth control, not able to use a computer, and this leads to not able to find your way home, not being able to remember to use the bathroom=dementia!!!!!!

I think this boils down to two honkeys wanting to make some quick cash (and apparently not doing the usual way of selling crack or hookin') and creating a product that makes a charicature of the candidate that they don't support. it's sad to see people respond to simplistic things but in defense of some we do like outragous things. it's similar to why snl was so amazing in the early times (blatant disreguard for what was then socially acceptable). obviously to say all racists vote one way or another is assuming quite a bit and who knows maybe some of the people just want to try a new brand of waffle mix. overall i do think that the product was made out of the wrong intentions and is offensive to muslims but some people are buying them for the novelty of the box.

This isn’t so much an example of racial bigotry as much as an example of religious bigotry. Despite what some may think this sort of thing exists in both political parties.
Republicans call Obama a Muslim and Democrats vehemently defend his Christian status all the while calling Republicans racist. None of the major political figures involved in this debate has the guts to take the moral high ground and say it’s ok to be a Muslim and the president of the US.
Meanwhile the media continues to distract us from having a meaningful debate with one racial issue after another until we’re worn so raw by the idea of racial inequality that we lose sight of what’s really important. Oh my god is that a charactiture of Barack Obama?! Never mind the fact that Oabama does indeed flip flop of issues and never mind the apparent religious bigotry apparent on this box. This box is clearly racist!

The kings of character assassination are at it again. The CEOs of delusion, the princes
of subversion- the "war dreamers" the neocons who gave us Bush and "his failed doctrine" want to give us
McCain and Palin! It never ceases to amaze me that our nations great philosophers, scholars, authors and financial experts in droves write about the current fleecing of our constitution our nation, and of the American middle class.
All the while conservatives continue to flock to right-wing evangelists, tabloid pundits and GOP theology!
After 7 and a half years of GOP subversion what does the nation have to show? An economy in shambles, unfinished wars more on the horizon and debt so enormous China and other foreign countries now own much of our nations remaining equity!
Conservatism is a dismal failure, the proof is in your house equity, your bank accounts, your paycheck, it’s on Wallstreet, its on the shelves of your supermarket, its on the corner gas station, its in job and house lose,
on the streets and deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s in the defiance from Pakistan, Russia, Venezuela and now China!
And so the same old personal song and dance about character, vision and dignity play out across the nation. Remember this “Bush has character, he has vision, he is honest, experienced!” We all know the truth of this aberration.
We all know conservatives want to plug in John Mccain, the same theology the same ideology from yet another legislator "insider" that represents the betrayal, the greed and the duplicity that has buried us to this point!
Great nations are upheld and wars are won or lost by the rightness and decency of the participants!
As our nations history goes we have never lost a war when we were right but now we have lost wars because we were ideologically wrong! This is wisdom the McCain and the neocons just don't grasp! It’s not just about strength its about wisdom and justice.
Such American qualities that have been inactive during the past seven plus years due to conservative politics! The answers are right in front of you.
Open your eyes, just read and leave denial at the door!

I think some people see a correlation between this waffle mix and Aunt Jemima waffle mix...and that would be where the racism comes in. Some people feel as if Aunt Jemima was a racial stereotype.
"While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama's politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly." -AP, yahoo.com

I find this amusing and I'm for Obama. It portrays how stupidly and narrowly Republicans view Obama--as black, Islamic, and for insubstantial change. It looks like it could have been made by a liberal making fun of conservative views. The fact that it wasn't makes it somewhat less humorous...but still, it's just so silly.

Alrighty, just from looking at the box in the picture, I can't really see the racist implication. What I do see is a hand drawn picture that over emphasizes certain facial characteristics. I've seen this kind of visual tactic used before on many political comics of both Clintons, and Bush. I also see religious implication based upon a lie that was spread earlier that Obama is a Muslim. However, that is not racist issue, but a religious issue.
What I do see when I look at the box is an attack that was blown way out of proportion when Kerry was running for office. Kerry changed his mind because the information he made his first decision on was false, so he must be a waffler or flip flopper. Now to my knowledge, Obama hasn't really changed his stance all that much on issues, and if that is the case then this kind of attack wouldn't be an exaggeration but an all out lie.
The other tactic that this box is employing is a fear tactic based upon the lie that Obama is Muslim. Implying Obama is Muslim also implies that he is either one of the middle eastern terrorists, or a sympathizer to them.
However people see it though, this is a low blow. I have to admit that it takes some wit and creativity; however, ultimately it takes a person who is shameless and/or fundamentally stupid enough to think this is funny to make this kind of product.

The election will not be won by the person who can convince America they are the best person for the job. Rrather it will be won by the person who can get the most of the base out to vote.
The ideals of the individuals mean nothing (this is a strong example of not talking about issues and simply making a splash)
The record of the parties means... nothing, clearly.
The ability of the person to lead means nothing.
This is the F*&king president of the United States of America... yet in the political climate and with the state of the media as it is, America is not truly discussing issues, Americans (many of them) are waiting to be told what to do.
The trouble is you have to get people to move. Taking action (voting) is something that both parties have had trouble with in recent history.
When your main objective is to get someone to cast a ballot. I men actually get off their ass and do the act of voting, then you've already missed out of the message.
The tampering that happens in voting districts, the unethical actions taken by the courts all tied to the lack of desire or the "average American" to take a stand for themselves means satire and racism IS an effective political tool.
I don't agree with it, but the reality is that you need to motivate the base. The rest is window dressing, because most people don't give a damn anyway.
Sarah Palin was not selected for any other reason than her ability to move the right wing vote. Nothing more. The Democrats in recent history have had a poor record in getting people to "get out the vote" It's there where they fail and this type of tactic, while disgusting and cruel and poor judgment etc etc. IS effective in the current political climate.
Good luck America, a whole lot of us are pulling for you.

I’m sure there are Republicans who aren’t racist. But they have a habit of staying strangely silent when one of their fellow Republicans engages in racism. People who stay silent when faced with wrong are no better than those perpetuating the wrongs, in my opinion. Perhaps if more people were critical of the actions of their own party, there would be less of this sort of stuff. Silence infers support, whether intended or not.
But as usual in America, when faced with a choice of doing what's right and party loyalty, most people choose party loyalty.

This is just like the 'lipstick' incident. It is a reflection of the observer's preconceptions. No image on the package is derogatory, a man smiling at waffles....gets all this 'racist' discussion? After all any 'insult' is determined by the observer/interpreter. Just who is the 'hill billy' here; the people that see a smiling man or people that want others to interpret the image in a defamatory and racist manner?
Not only the images but the line ,"Point toward MECCA for better waffles"; still in order to offend ;depends on how it's interpreted....
Ten dollars a box ,.... nice profit margin. I think people can come up with many, many, many, many more products for this hidden 'market.' Bleed BOTH party's. Nice non-violent PROFITABLE protesting.

OK ThoughtNu,
Your snarky grandiloquence is duly noted, but as human beings we are pwned by our cultural traditions and that is what shapes our prejudice and perceptions.
So it is my perception, based on the cultural traditions that I have witnessed, that this is (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) good ole boy racism.
And I dont like it and I protest. That is my view and you may like it or not.
And the reaction here, some in agreement and some in disaggrement -and some just plain disgusted, is normal.
But waltzing in and rhetorically carpet bombing with what almost seems like a mutation of Gadamer's theory is just plain ridiculous.
I guess my problem is that I am an unfortunate member of the reality based community. I am a result of the social construct you speak of, and my interpretation of the artwork is based solely on my perception of reality.
But for some reason you seem to want me to question my perception. Should I percieve you as an apologist for bigotry? I should think not. Does bigotry even exist to you?
Tossing in philosophical jargon about observer/interpreter seems odd.

Satire is a slippery thing that is best avoided by most people. I can see how the makers of this box may have thought it was hilarious satire and not intended to hurt anybody's feelings. That said, it isn't particularly funny or well thought out.
I don't really recall Obama ever doing a "white men, they walk like this" bit in his speeches, either, so I don't think the idea that some black people are racist really justifies making this kind of product.

I have never seen you post on this site once, but you are sure trolling the shit out of this thread. How about you chill out, not everybody is as biased as you are. We don't need your Bermuda-Triangle rhetoric thrown into much more civilized discussions than you are used to (but I bet you'll continue posting anyway). In all, just chill. You are noticeably agitated; it's kinda pathetic.

Bingo! You nailed him, lulu81!
He is certainly a cyber-pest, a coward hiding behind a keyboard and most assuredly a troll.
He can't spell or punctuate a sentence. He loathes capitalization. He's too lazy to add apostrophes. In other words, he is all hat and no cattle, as we say in Texas.
Besides exhibiting those endearing qualities, he seems to have a room temperature I.Q. and is stumbling through life following his chosen calling of being a sociopath.

These fuckers can't even defend the picture on the top. I love it, it's all about discrimination of foreigners, other religions, and other cultures. (essentially the whole republican platform)
This box is covered with "white power."
Even i can see it, and I am white as snow.

It's like the line from Pride and Prejudice "So this is your opinion of me?" It's purely racist.
I wonder if Obama could sue...

He could it would just depend on the angle. It's the US, you can sue anyone for anything.
It is probably in his best interest to not do anything - take the higher road.

"Racism in this country is more practiced by Democrats?"-- Considering that the statement is a generalization in itself, justifying the prejudices of others only makes the situation worse.

Suggest to Palin that the new baby might be genetically predisposed to enjoy that breakfast item.

Most conservatives are not decent and make poor role models. Sociopathy is in epidemic proportions among the republican party.

I'm working on the packaging for Goiter Gum right now. It is a massive and unbelievably white ball of very vanilla gum that will make your face asymmetrical when it is chewed.
See funny, not racist.I'm so tired of everybody being offended. That is some funny stuff. You just want to make it racist so you will have something be offended by. God knows, nobody is allowed to offend black people, just christians, jews, whites and successful people of any color. What a bunch of panty waste cry babies.

Let's see. A black man falsely pinned as a Muslim on a box of waffles. Oh no, that's not racist, you say. I guess you'd like to go back to slavery days, huh? If you're tired of people being offended, lock yourself away from the rest of the world, and shove that wannabe apathetic bull crap you're shoveling right back down your throat.
