'Anti-yob patrols' get £60 million to tackle crime

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has earmarked £60 million for local councils to fund youth crime, and will make her formal announcement today. The funding is part of a Youth Crime Action plan, and will pay for after-school patrols of police, ex-gang members and youth workers aimed at reducing the number of young criminals.

Ms Smith said: "I know the vast majority of young people are on the right track but there is a minority whose behaviour causes disruption to their communities. I want young people to be able to fulfill their potential but that means intervening as soon as possible to prevent offending and to ensure that unacceptable behaviour is tackled effectively."

While I am hopeful that these task forces will help alleviate some of the problem, there should also be more efforts to give kids things to do after school besides wander around getting in to trouble. We have to ask why youngsters are getting in to crime. Preventative measures need to attack the problem from its roots as well.

    • My point exactly, Social_Fuzz. Or perhaps even a combination of the prevention and punishment perhaps, if the government is so keen to come over all hard? Every young person I've worked with says there's just nowhere to go and hang out, so they end up feeling vulnerable and getting into trouble.

    • Hmm, how about 60-million to invest in social projects for teens, so they dont have to go outside and drink cider every weekend?

(edit)- Or 60-million to burn every issue of the dailymail and the sun in a home with children? hehe (thats just a joke)..... or is it?
