Columbia police have denied a request from a neo-Nazi group to march Nov. 8, saying they do not have the personnel to man both the parade and the University of Missouri home football game against Kansas State University that day.
Steven Boswell of the Missouri chapter of the National Socialist Movement submitted an application for a parade and special event permit Friday to march from Watson Place near MU to the Boone County Courthouse, where his group is proposing to rally from noon to 5 p.m.
The same group held a rally in downtown Columbia on March 12, 2007. It attracted hundreds of onlookers, some of whom reacted with anger to the presence of the dozen or so neo-Nazis who turned out for the procession. More than 50 Columbia police officers were on hand to keep the two groups separated, and police expect a similar show of force will be needed the next time the group marches in Columbia.
