Got an idea to help the world? Here's $10 million

Got an idea that could change the world, or at least help a lot of people? Google wants to hear from you -- and they'll pay as much as $10 million to make your idea a reality.
Google Inc. will award $10 million to solicit ideas it believes could benefit the world.

To help celebrate its 10th birthday, the ambitious Internet giant is launching an initiative to solicit, and bankroll, fresh ideas it believes could have broad and beneficial impact on people's lives.

Called Project 10^100 (pronounced "10 to the 100th"), Google's initiative will seek input from the public and a panel of judges in choosing up to five winning ideas, to be announced in February.

Google announced the project live on CNN on Wednesday morning.

"These ideas can be big or small, technology-driven or brilliantly simple -- but they need to have impact," said Google in a press release. "We know there are countless brilliant ideas that need funding and support to come to fruition."

Ideas such as the Hippo Water Roller, which Google cited as the kind of concept the company would be interested in rewarding. Developed in Africa, where it is most used, the Hippo Water Roller is a barrel-shaped container, attached to a handle, that holds 24 gallons of water and can be rolled with little effort, like a wheelbarrow, making it easier for villagers on foot to transport critically needed fresh water to their homes.
Don't Miss

People are encouraged to submit their ideas, in any of 25 languages, on http://www.project10tothe100.com/index.html through October 20. Entrants must briefly describe their idea and answer six questions, including, "If your idea were to become a reality, who would benefit the most and how?"
----------------
Don't know about you, but I'm formulating ideas and bringing up past ideas I've had! May the best idea win!

    • Here's an idea, we have a system for every home and apartment to eventually get and pay off solar panels. almost like the digital cable converter. have people pay it off by paying the same amount as their regular electric bill. it'll work but until our economy gets back to where it was under Clinton we won't see it.

    • the google = big brother analogy is old news, but reading this list of goals, it struck me... "Hey, these are things the government should be doing, but we trust google to do them better" what a weird cultural moment.

can you imagine if this contest was hosted on usa.gov instead? i can't.

    • Here's an idea.

Stop using money. It is not worth anything anyway.

      Never was, really.

What did we do before we had money?

We shared and traded food, goods, labor and time.

Worked around the world for thousands of years.

And it did not destroy the air, water and earth.

Builds stronger, more interdependent, more cooperative and more sustainable communities.

Money is the source of inequality and oppression.

Money causes destruction of lives, animals, plants, air, water and earth.

Work for Peace with Justice and help heal the earth.

Declare independence from the tyranny of money.

Share and trade food, goods, work and time.

One Earth. Think About It/Act Like It

    • people have all types of ideas in their head. The hard part is getting them down on paper and or having money to back them. It is great idea for Google to help with the financial incentive. Should be a very interesting list of ideas.

    • heres a plan to raise 10 million plus. Have a country wide fundraiser where people can pay $5 a turn to punch bush and cheney in the stomach, $20 for a head kick, and $1 to kick them in their nuts

    • One message from the Project 10^100 website that is very powerful is the concept that "helping helps everybody, helper and helped alike."

This is so true. Some of the happiest moments in my life have been when I have been able to help others and then see the impact that it made for them.

    • I'm definitely going to submit an idea; centered around a non-profit ad agency that focuses on advocacy efforts and revenue generation for NGOs/NPOs.

    • simple everyday things help. when i lived in philly would walk to and fro work everyday, would pick up trash on the ground and put in in bin, used cloth bags for shopping, rode my bike instead of hopping on the bus. when i moved o the country intead of using clay cat litter and figuring out what to do with it would use mulch. The dirty mulch would be put in area mixed with leaves and left to nature to break down. the dirt from it used in my veggie garden. buying eggs in cardboard cartons, not wrapping veggies bought in plastic bags, there is so much an person can do. When you take a shower keep a bucket in for the run off to water house plants or outside gardens. One thing that always bothered me was when city folk move out to the country the first thing they do is cut down the trees and pave their driveway, then cut more trees down to make a grassy area. I kept the trees raked up the leaves in the fall then throw them over my outside plants as installation from winter frost. Instead of subscribing to magazines go to library and borrow theirs. So much we can do to help with little effort.

    • Q: What do I get if my idea is chosen?
A: You get good karma and the satisfaction of knowing that your idea might truly help a lot of people.

      http://www.project10tothe100.com/faq.html

Is that it? A revolutionary, ground breaking idea that can help millions of people, save the planet, etc., and the reward is 'good karma?'

    • Is 10 Million Dollars enough to throw out the CIA and the US government completely??

I think that replacing them with actual human beings will help the world in a multitude of ways. Evil is contagious and the devils in charge are breeding it and it's being extended to the rest of the world. Fixing that would change everything.

    • yes, a simple idea is all it takes to help people. I would use the money to further help people, set up a fund (if they still exist after the financial crisis is solved) and use it to research more ways to help people and to put those ideas to use

    • Why not take that money and use it to help people put solar shields or other changes to reduce the use of fuels on their homes. New ideas are needed but can the public afford to make the change. Most homeowners, myself included are struggling to keep their homes. Additions are out of the question. Where I live I have to get my heating oil from a co op and have no input into where they buy it from. Our heating bills are around $450 a month from October to April. And that is keeping the heat on low for 20 hours a day. You can come up with all the changes needed but if you have no money to add them what is the use.

    • ...I do not want the money....but this is a good idea that would save so much energy.....Austin Texas has so many parking garages and offices that stay illuminated 24 hours a day....all week-end long...and many more places where the amount of energy is wasted.....air conditioning etc....the amount of money and resources that could be saved World wide would be astronomical.....and if people were not so scared of the dark....even more.....the amount of waste in energy...food....all types of natural resources could be curtailed very easily....Golden Ruler...Will
