While it's good that McCain is openly putting our economy on the forefront, he definitely should not postpone the debates in order to do so. He needs to be prepared to discuss its current state, right here and now.

McCain cares so much about the economy that he canceled his appearance on Dave Letterman's show, telling him he was on his way to Washington...but instead stayed in New York to appear in an interview with Katie Couric to campaign about what he will do about the economy.
If the economy collapses, I blame McCain for chatting with Couric in New York instead of catching that Washington flight.

Obama responds to McCain below:
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Barack Obama responded to John McCain's announcement that he is suspending his campaign to return to Washington to help with negotiations for a Wall Street bailout. The key question was whether Obama would follow suit and suspend his campaign or perhaps just join with McCain in asking for a postponement of the first debate between the two men, currently scheduled for Friday.
It took a little while, but Obama made it clear that he plans to continue, and thinks the debate should go on.
"With respect to the debates, it's my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess. And I think that it is going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once," Obama said. A hint of a smile crossed his face after he delivered that line. He then added, "I think there's no reason why we can't be constructive in helping to solve this problem and also tell the American people what we believe and where we stand ... So in my mind, actually, it's more important than ever that we present ourselves to the American people and try to describe where we want to take the country and where we want to take the economy."

This is fucking important. Fuck the election, this current situation with the economy is going to fuck all of us. We have to make an attempt to keep everything from falling through. Obama's absence is an indication of what really matters. For those of you thinking about voting third party, and perhaps don't remember the 2000 election, let me offer you some advice. I was a progressive young person in 2000 and was dissatisfied with Al Gore because he wasn't being progressive enough. Thinking that there was "no difference" between the two parties as Ralph Nader told me, I voted for him. Living in Kentucky, it probably didn't make much of a difference, but Nader got more votes than the margin of victory in Florida. If those people had voted for the major party that was closest to them on the issues (Democratic), Al Gore would have been President (it wouldn't have been close enough for a recount) and we never would have invaded Iraq.
We wouldn't have the Patriot Act, we wouldn't have warrantless surveillance, and we sure wouldn't have a national economic crisis. We also would have already begun working on climate change. Can you imagine?
The video is misleading because Obama does still promise to get us out of Iraq, Maliki endorsed his plan, if single payer crossed his desk he would sign it. I was a Hillary Clinton supporter in the primaries so I'm not getting my preferred candidate, but I could not live with myself if I voted for anyone other than Obama this November. How would I explain that my pettiness and pickiness had caused people to die? Everyone who cares about progressive issues should think about that. A President Obama would be working WITH Ralph Nader to do these things, whereas McCain would call him a left-wing extremist and be telling him to go shove it.
This is an easy choice, people. A change in the agenda or more of the same.

Why does McCain suddeny care about the economy 2 days before a major national debate? Is one of his 7 homes up for foreclosure?
Seriously, he has had weeks even years before now to do something about it. The economy has been going south for years, and now he decides to pull this excuse out of the usual place. It's a complete load of bullshit, for lack of a better term for it.

With his decades of foreign policy experience, McCain should barely need any prep time at all for a debate on foreign policy. . . so surely, he'd be capable of juggling day work on the economy and evening talk on foreign policy.

Thanks alicynx, but the added R was used on purpose. Karl Rove uses Strategery, which my new word for Republicans distorted strategy. It has worked for them this long, they distort the truth in plain sight, with no shame. All they have to do is say it, its strategery. Mainstream media are enablers to the strategery, they spin fact and distorted facts as equal. .
George W. once explained something, using his unique language and he pronounced it as Strategery. I found it funny, it explained a lot. They were using Strategery (distorted strategy) to mislead people. People no longer call liars, liars. Republicans use that strategery to the max. They even act insulted if someone dares to unravel their distortion.

I can't believe McCain is taking credit for asking Obama to come together on solving the financial crisis. It was Obama who called McCain:
"At 8:30 this morning, Senator Obama called Senator McCain to ask him if he would join in issuing a joint statement outlining their shared principles and conditions for the Treasury proposal and urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal," Mr. Burton said in an email to reporters. "At 2:30 this afternoon, Senator McCain returned Senator Obama's call and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement. The two campaigns are currently working together on the details."

After having to hear and look at them for the past two and half years I really don't care if they debate at all. Since they both have practically the same views on so much from continuing this war and on other issues like the climate crisis (which obviously isn't important enough for either of them to stop a debate) it isn't a big loss. I was pretty amazed to hear about this. I think it's fair to hear the guy out. The recent economic crash is a major blow to America and it doesn't need to pointed out that it's having huge repercussions and the US isn't even close to being out of the woods yet.
McCain hasn't suggested the election gets delayed, just simply that they postpone the debate. If his priority is to focus on ensuring the best bill to help resolve the financial crisis is passed, as opposed to putting his efforts into pithy put downs and press-friendly debate catchphrases, I can see where he's coming from.
It's easy to let political bias cloud judgement and presume he's chickening out but it would be narrow-sighted to jump to that conclusion without considering all sides.

I commend his wanting to focus on a very serious economic crisis at hand, but that can't take away from either McCain or Obama's duty to the American people to provide them with a public debate so that they can cast an informed vote. Sure, what's one more week? But what happens if something else major crops up next week (hopefully it won't) that makes Obama want to postpone the postponed debate?
Part of the job of President is to step up to tackle the big issues as and when they arise -- and that may mean dealing with more than one problem at once. The world is not going to wait for the President to be ready.

@intelligenceisacurse - true there's no prompting but the candidates do rehearse.
Yesterday the Guardian reported that Barack Obama was in "intensive rehearsals at a specially-prepared camp in Florida today for his debate showdown with John McCain." Makes total sense to me - there's no way I'd want to go up in front of a global audience in one of the most important debates of my life without working on my main points.
Interestingly the same article says McCain "has not set up a similar debate camp and is continuing with almost a full campaign programme, fitting rehearsals in between."
McCain's defence seems to be that campaigning and preparing for the debates isn't as important at this point as working with the other senators to draw up an economic rescue package. By doing that, isn't he honouring the votes of those people who put him in office?

So, you really don't think he's just scared to death of the debates because he doesn't know a thing about the economy? Really?

The McCain camp have always known he'd need to debate about the economy with Obama. Friday's debate is about foreign policy, a subject McCain is ok with.
Before the suggested suspension, he could have easily batted away any difficult economic questions by saying the debate should stay focused and if need be just dropped in a line or two about being a PoW - a tactic that's still curiously effective.

what McCain is saying is that he can only do one
thing at a time.and if he has to actually do something, whatever it
may be, that involves the financial crisis spawned
from deregulation then his campaign must stop.sad.
and having you agree to that point is sad too.
do you have to do more than one thing at a time
at your job? huh?what is John McCain doing anyway?
what does it mean that he is working on the economy?he just told you that his figuring out what to do
with himself is more important than debating for the
American people. that we do not matter as much as
his work that is all consuming.funny, I do not see any John McCain answers and
solutions for this all, seems his voting record helped
create it if you ask me.If the other guy, Obama, says that he can multi-task
and do everything at once, why cant McCain. As an executive chef, I often needed to do 12 things
at once... I guess John McCain isnt capable of that huh?and liberal bias?
I hate the liberal left, I would never vote for Obama either.
so watch who you label there buddy. - 3 years ago

Sorry Mr. McCain !!!That was all we needed to confirm that you are not ready to talk about the issue in public, because you have no explanation to give to America since you supported and was part of the whole Bush's administration that drove this country to its biggest crises ever. You are not ready to confess that your party wants to use 700 billion dollars from taxpayers that should be used for something else like helping victms of Ike and Catrina who are still struggling down south, instead of helping rich bankers who have billions of dollars in their pockets already and will have the US money to clean after their mess. Lame, lame, lame

Step one:
Call Barack Obama at 866-675-2008.
Hit 6 to speak with a campaign volunteer.
Once connected, politely deliver the following message:Hi, my name is ...
I was wondering if Senator Obama, being a believer in equal opportunity and equal rights, could insist that Ralph Nader and other ballot qualified third party candidates be included in the upcoming Presidential debates?
After all, Nader is on 45 state ballots.
And he's polling well nationwide. And he could help Senator Obama challenge the corporate Republicans.
True, Ralph would critique Senator Obama for his corporate ties also. But isn't that what democracy is about? Could you please leave this message for the campaign manager? Thank you.
Call Barack Obama, E-mail Janet Brown NowStep two:
E-mail Janet Brown, the executive director of the Commission on Presidential Debates.
Here's a sample e-mail:
Dear Janet Brown:
Greetings.
You must be busy.
Preparing for the first Presidential debate this Friday.
So, I won't take much of your time.
Just wanted to let you know that the American people were not born yesterday.
We know the deal.
Take that little private corporation that you run.
Controlled by the two corporate parties.
And funded by big business.
For the purpose of excluding independent minded candidates.
Friday, two Wall Street candidates are scheduled to be in the ring.
Barack Obama and John McCain.
The one candidate who represents the American people, Main Street, if you will, will be on the outside looking in.
So, here's a simple request.
Drop your exclusionary restrictions.
And let Ralph Nader into the debates.
It will be good for your conscience.
Good for the American people. (I believe it was The League of Women Voters that called your corporatized debates "campaign-trail charades devoid of substance, spontaneity, and honest answers to tough questions.")
And good for democracy.
Let the American people have a real debate for once.
Main Street vs. Wall Street.Thank you.
Signed
your name.
