John McCain has asked to postpone the first presidential debate on Friday and is "suspending his campaign" in order to work on the economy.

    • We have no business forging our way into other countries to "spread democracy" when we do not have it here in America.

      Excerpt from article:
But as Ralph Nader told the Center, being barred from the debates leaves no third-party candidate any real chance of serious consideration by the majority of voters in the first place. “The two parties created the debate commission. It’s a private company. And they have set the rules,” he said. “So if they shut you out of the national presidential debates, there is no way, short of being a Perot, of reaching people — just no way. So it’s a two-party elected dictatorship.” In his three previous presidential general election campaigns, Nader has never been allowed to participate in the Commission’s presidential debates.

    • Shouldn't the next president be able to multi-task? Why can't McCain focus on the economy and talk about foreign policy on the same day. This seems like a tactic.

    • Drat! I was all ready to go with my Twitter account, too.

Still, I think this is great, and I do not think of it as a campaign 'nobility stunt.' I like that two senators call for a ceasefire and, rather than concentrating on what politicians DO (politicking), they might take time out to focus on what politicians are SUPPOSED to do (protect the people!).

    • Yeah-ok-lets postpone the debate-because as we should all know without McCain nothing gets done on capital hill!!!

This is so stupid--how about we just push back everything until they are ready--how about if the polls don't favor the republican ticket in early november we postpone the election for a few months.

How about if an on going bi-partisan investigation into possible abuse of power won't win votes we just ignore it and tell everyone involved to do the same until after the elections!!

    • no.

you cannot give the American public an hour or two
      for your scheduled debate?

      are you serious?

what would they do during that time at night?
      nothing.

      lame, lame, lame.

      this is just plain bullshit.

If either of these guys were integral to the plans to turn our economy around, I'd be agreeing with McCain here. Since neither of them will really have any hand at all in the restructuring of Wall St or the rest of our economic infrastructure, I say let them duke it out. This is like going to the grocery store hungry - you don't know what you want in particular, but you really want to get something to scratch it itch. I want to hear what each of them have to say, and since the "issue of the economy" isn't going away anytime soon, he's just staving off the inevitable...

Debates dont happen out of thin air. Many people have been preparing for the debates. Money has been invested. Tickets have gone out. Too much time has been invested in preparations to walk away from the debate.

In my opinion, it shows Total Disrespect for the people who have worked so hard to make the debate possible. People matter! Doesnt John McCain appreciate their efforts? Doesnt sound like it to me!

    • i think he's right. some might say he is stalling for time but i think the economy is more important right now. i worry that he has shot himself in the foot too many times to be concerned with the campaign anyway. the news says the polls are close, but i say he's fucked. SMOKE WEED.

His presence at the debate will be far more effective than running from it... even if he DOES get clobbered. Or at least it would have if he hadn't been a sissy and starting whinig about it. NOW? He looks bad either way. he has nothing to do with the final decision.... Barack Obama will be in attendance alongside Bush and McCant and STILL able to run his campaign and be present for the "debate."

And btw... Smoking has nothing to do with any of this. You don't help your argument by tacking something like that onto the end if there is no relevance. I'm all for NORML but there is a time and a place. Be mature about it dude - you want people to accept it then don't run around treating without respect.
