Legislator proposes sterilization for poor women

State Representative John LaBruzzo of Metairie said many of his constituents are tired of paying for children from poor families and that is why he is considering proposing legislation that would pay women on government assistance $1,000 if they choose to be sterilized.

“You have these people who are just fed up with working their buns off to try to provide for their own family and being forced by the government o provide for others’ families who just want to have unlimited kids,” he said.

LaBruzzo said he is studying voluntary sterilization for women whose sole financial support comes from the government in the form of welfare or other public assistance. His idea would be to give the women $1,000 if they had their tubes tied.

His proposal has come under harsh criticism by some civil rights groups.

The ACLU called it a misguided and mean-spirited attempt to eliminate poverty by eliminating the poor.

LaBruzzo said his office has been flooded by emails, many supporting his position.

“We have more in favor, saying, ‘good job, keep it going.’” he said. “Of course we have a lot saying you’re going in the wrong direction.”

LaBruzzo said that in addition to the sterilization of women, he would consider vasectomies for welfare dads and tax incentives for higher income families with children in private schools.

"Hey lady, you can't eat or take your sick kid to a doctor??? Well, I have $1,000 for you if you just do this one little thing..."

So $1,000 to pay the woman, plus the cost of medical bills for the procedure... People are willing to pay that for the poor but not food or health care... Beautiful.

is this a human rights violation?
i seriously doubt that the constittuents pay that kind of coin, if they do why don't they pull their collective heads outta their asses and formulate a plan that calls for better education for the poor, better health care options and welfare to work programs.

It doesnt really matter which state it is. There are people like him in every state, they are just in the closet and dont have the courage to "say it out loud". They are the same ones who think gays who have come out of the closet are wrong. Closet biggots are as dangerous to our moral well being as any homosexual.

    • This guy is crazy. He says voluntary but its not healthy for a society to even consider this (Nazis). Though I think he understands that poverty is inherited in this country and you can't pull yourself up by the boot straps. Why doesn't he put two and two together and realize these children need to be put on a level playing field, not give incentives to further segregate this country by sending kids to private schools.

Those of us who arent living large, yet surviving will be forced to pay for the debts of corporations and individuals who thought they "deserved" a better life than others. Apparently they were wrong, now it is on the backs of EVERY AMERICAN, rich, or poor to pay for their bad judgement.

When the smoking ban came to Cleveland, one of the bosses at the company where I worked said, "good, Im tired of paying for smokers". I thought about it and the next day I told him he was full of shit, he didnt even have to pay for his own health care, let alone smokers. Within two weeks his daughter gave birth to a pre-mature little boy. He was in Neo-Natal for months. By grace of God he is okay. But, if I were as callous about the others as he was, I would have suggested his daughter be sterilized, we cant afford more pre-mature babies. Within two weeks of him acting so callous, his family became a drain on the health care system. No one talked about the expense of his grandsons care. We were praying he would be healthy.

We have turned into a judgmental society. When we think we should sterilize people because they are poor, we have become what we detested. Compassion is now valued in dollars? SAD! SAD! SAD!. Its no wonder the dollar is loosing value? So is our real compassion.
