Hundreds of worried football fans apparently bombarded police on Wednesday evening to find out if Gazza had gone to the great pub in the sky after rumours of his demise quickly spread on the internet.
Northumbria Police confirmed the ex-England midfielder is still alive and, ahem, kicking: “We’ve had lots of calls on this but there’s absolutely no substance to it.”
Gascoigne, 41, was recently hospitalised after a drink and drugs overdose while on a three week holiday in Portugal.

He should have stopped showering himself in booze a while back, what a roller-coaster of a private life. I would sure be concerned if his health falls into a critical state. Shambles or not, he was one of England's finest.

Should we all be calling the police to check on the mortality of celebrities? Perhaps they can set up a hot line.

I was just thinking that - surely it counts as wasting police time, even if to some people it may seem like an urgent matter of life and death...
