The first presidential debate between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama remained in doubt Friday, the very day it was to be held, embroiled in the same partisan divisions that were holding up a Wall Street bailout plan.
Obama said he intended to travel to the University of Mississippi in Oxford, where the debate had long been scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. EDT. McCain, who had proposed delaying the contest so the two presidential hopefuls could help negotiate an economic rescue plan, wouldn't commit.
"I'm very hopeful that we'll get enough of an agreement tomorrow so we can make this debate," McCain said Thursday on NBC's "Nightly News."
Obama tried to press McCain into showing up for the first of three scheduled debates between them, saying they should be able to handle the 90-minute forum and the financial crisis at the same time.
"Senator McCain has no need to be fearful about a debate," Obama told reporters. "He's a person of strong opinions and he's been expressing them on the campaign trail."
Both McCain and Obama returned to Washington on Thursday at the urging of President Bush, who invited them to a meeting with congressional leaders at the White House. But a session aimed at showing unity in resolving the financial crisis broke up with conflicts in plain view. McCain would not commit to supporting a plan worked out by congressional negotiators, said people from both parties who were briefed on the exchange.
McCain's campaign said the meeting "devolved into a contentious shouting match" and implied that Obama was at fault — on a day when McCain said he was putting politics aside to focus on the nation's financial problems.
Democrats differed.
The effort stalled late Thursday, with talks set to resume Friday. McCain was returning to Capitol Hill on Friday, his campaign said.
Meanwhile, debate preparations continued in Oxford, with streets blocked off and big TV screens set up on campus and near City Hall for large debate-watching parties.---more at link

The surest and quickest way to explode the myth of McCain's alleged foreign policy "experience" is to just ask him questions. The minute he opens his mouth it's another gaffe, misstatement or outright lie. My God, remember that whole debacle with Spain? Isn't anyone checking his meds???
I really, really hope McCain comes to the debates because.....there's a reason he stopped talking to the press these last few weeks! It wasn't because he was wowing them with his deep insights into foreign policy! Basically his campaign team grabbed him and put duct tape around his mouth so he could stop embarrassing himself for at least a couple news cycles.
I really hope McCain shows up.

"Anti-abortion at the Federal level is a Republican sucker play for people who will vote "pro-life" on abortion, but will still vote for war if they're scared enough. Strange, the super-christian right seems to like killing alot after you've been born." WOOOO! Right ON @ GavinTheMother.
How true that is. Don't terminate a pregnancy because its immoral but lets go out and kill as many as we can in the name of "democracy." Because thats ok.
Religious wars are ok. So is invading a country under the pretense of "aid" or "war on terror" and then refusing to leave and continuing to kill countless civilians AND american soldiers.
But you can't end a pregnancy because then the forming group of cells will go to purgatory.
Jammer mentioned that we liberals force our morals on them? Quite the opposite. What do you think this war in the middle east is? That is the "GOP" is essentially doing. Forcing American POV and morals on another country. One that has PERSISTENTLY cried out for us to LEAVE THEM ALONE.
Why do you think we are aiding Georgia and not Russia. Because the GOP can "reform" that country. Make it one of ours. Like they try to do with every other small country out there. They chose a side before all the facts were out. Turns out NOW maybe it was GA that invaded Russia and not the other way around.
Don't force your morals on us your whacky liberals! But turn a blind eye when we try and do that to NOT just our own people but countries smaller than we.

McCain knows very little about economics, knows how to send troops into a "war", and gets confused very easily. Yeah Beth, I agree that McCain is the best choice to save this country... NOT! He's a total tool. Maybe if he would have been the McCain of 2000 would I support him. Too young to lead? Bill Clinton was 47, JFK was 43 (he was shot so we will never know the extent of what he could have done), Theodore Roosevelt was 42, Abraham Lincoln was 52. Please leave age out of this, because your candidate is getting ready for greener pastures...

Hes to young! Ummmm If you HAVE to point out age I am more for a president who will survive his time in office... and not die, leaving someone who, regardless of her age, is COMPLETELY inexperienced and knows nothing abotu the economy and foreign policy and who is dependent on OIL for part of her families income. The Palin Cult there. She needs oil to feed the fast growing group of mouths she has.
It just baffles me how behind republicans can be. how backwards. and HOW BLIND!!!!!!!!!!

Obama will raise taxes and nobody cares about small moral values. I'm not saying let the small things turn over your opinion or decisions, however they shouldn't be oblivious in our educated minds. Plus, do we really want a muslim back ground running our country??? No one is perfect but I certainly do not believe that Obama is the cure. Change? HA. I guess we'll see in the long run who brings real change.

to think that McCain was right by rushing to the senate floor to get ths done is almost laughable.,last time I checked he is not in the senate banking commitee. he had not commited in writing any plans of how best to go about this. and he like obama had not worked on the senate since april. also if he's presence was so urgently needed at the senate floor why didn't he go there with a plan ready to be placed .he is a man of strong conviction a great guy by many standards but if your sole purpose of cancelling your presence at the debates and postponing your campaign to get this done right don't you think it would've been wise for him to go out there with a plan. he had to be called upon to speak and add his two cents in the meeting . if he's presence was that important he would've been out there pushing his agenda selling his agenda and fighting to get this done right. but last i checked he had not proposed any form of deal and he could'nt commit on the propsed bill. so political stunt or country firtst? depends on your party loyalty.

You guys use the "art of deflection" nicely. Kudos. But, you all still miss the point. The issues that we face need to be talked about. And WE The People deserve to hear what these candidates have to say. McCain's notoriously "loaded" town halls are NOT the answer. We need a neutral location with unscripted questions. I want to see who has a firm grasp of the issues. Anyone who says different is not concerned with the real issues we face. They must only be concerned with "winning" or "blaming".

I think that there should be people who would not put up with anything who should ask questions asked by citizens from all walks of life.
The person or people should have no ties to anyone in politics or news media. They should be free to speak and ask the questions that are requested to be asked by people.
I know not many people saw Swing Vote, but at the end with the Debate there were questions asked that were asked by people through one person and that is something that could be done.
We don't need a burn show...a show where people applause or cheer for the defeat or the bumbling of someone else. That's not getting anywhere---for the other person should not win because he can lie better or handle himself better with the lies he's willing to tell.
They constantly feel uncomfortable with interviews and other things I think the Debate should have them in a little bit of comfort as in not being grilled relentlessly. Asking questions to know what they think doesn't have to be an interrogation no matter what people think about the dire situation of America questions can be asked and answered without a heated feel.

Given McCains military experience I doubt that a debate with Comrade Obama would create problems for him.
What a lot of people are forgetting in their zeal to label McCAin as bad and Obama as good is that both of them are senators. As such their first duty is the business of the country. Since Obama has been running for the presidency since he got to D.C. ignoring the business of the country is nothing new to him.
This board, and the media, needs more objectivity. I don't even give credence to media reports of Palin, McCain or any Republican misdeeds or allegations of fault. The reporting is so slanted and, many times, an outright lie.
I adopt a wait and see attitude. Not because of allegiance to the REpublicans but because of the intellectual dishonesty of the other side. - 3 years ago

Why do people who don't like him care?
This makes Obama look good. Why does it matter?
Fear is the only thing I can think of. But I don't get that either seeing how Obama's ahead in the polls.
I think this would be far worse for McCain if people just ignored the fact he may not be going and move on with life. Giving someone who wants the attention the attention isn't making them look bad no matter the situation, it's making them look better.
So bad mouthing him is only making people who like him like him more.
I don't get what people are trying to accomplish, but they aren't wining by complaining about McCain.

McCain has made a lot of misteps during this campaign. He would be destroyed in a debate, because he's made too many indefensible statements in the past. Obama is also a more highly skilled speaker.

This is rediculous. McCain Would be a far better president anyways and I guess that the Democratic part feels inferior and has to try to vaguely pin something were it has no place to be pinned. McCain is PROlife and against gay marriage. Our only hope for keeping our country beautiful, safe, and respected. Obama is too young to lead!!! How can you lead when you haven't experianced life enough to know what's in it anyways?! This truely makes me upset to even think about this debate. GO REPUBLICANS!!!!

Are you serious??? And yet you are voting for a VP with even LESS experience? I hate to tell you but that EXCUSE does not work anymore. And keeping a country Prolife and against gay marriage doesn't make a country more beautiful. It makes it close minded, racsist and just another third world nazi regime structure.
Go back to whatever religious compound you crawled out of. Your blinded views and bullcrap excuses are unwanted.
You want to talk up McCain give a real reason... just another uneducated voter... voting for the wrong reasons... And I hate to break it to you kiddo - Gay Marriage is already here... so are life partners and I am DAMN proud to stand by my friends as they say their vows.... and Roe vs. Wade will never be overturned. Unconstitutional.
When will you neocons learn... every election some zealous idiot gets on stage and promises to overturn R vs W or ban gay marriage. AND IT NEVER HAPPENS. In fact we are closer to reformation of laws for gays than ever and the country won't take responsibility for the millions that will opt for a treatment that is potentially fatal (such as using a hanger or black market drugs).
You're probably also against birth control aren't you. GREAT idea! Lets just take away all sex education and see how that works. I mean I can alrady tell you.... people who are uneducated (sex) have a higher tendency to contract an STD or become pregnant because they don't know any better. Why don't you just go ask your friend Bristol.

Republicans the only hope to keep this country beautiful, safe, and respected? Really???
Republican policy is what got us into this mess.Obama's environmental policy-scientifically more accurate=US more beautiful
McCain-supported Iraq from beginning and said he'd bomb Iran despite there being no evidence of danger(believe it or not Americans are actually dying. No really they are).
Obama = US saferObama wants dialog. McCain wants war. Who's more respected internationally? Hands down Obama.
OBama= US more respectedMcCain is scared of a debate because his campaign is rife with inaccuracies and will get destroyed in a debate if one ever occurs.
McCain is delaying also because Palin has little knowledge of the issues, particularly foreign policy. The one area she is America's formost expert in, according to McCain, is energy policy and she doesn't know jack about that either (i.e. domestic drilling=the way to energy independence LOL)
If your talking about inexperience Palin's your girl.I'm no Democrat, but still believing in the Republican
party is mind boggling.PS
The Federal abortion issue is moot. The Reps had a majority vote in Congress as well as an anti-abortion Pres and did anything get done? No. Anti-abortion at the Federal level is a Republican sucker play for people who will vote "pro-life" on abortion, but will still vote for war if they're scared enough. Jammer - there is a big difference between what we are asking and what you people are asking.
YOU want to vote to take away rights. We want to vote to KEEP them.
What is the difference? Your vote will force YOUR morals on us. Our vote will allow you to continue with whatever small minded POV you have. You dont want to terminate a pregnancy? Then You dont have to. That is the beauty of ProCHOICE. It allows everyone to make the choice that is right for them based on their moral values.
Now Gay marriage... I wish you GOPs weren't bigoted and homophobic. You're right, forcing the idea of equality on neocons is impossible.
BUT the GOP party is the most backward party I have ever seen. Yuo "claim" you want equality but want to take away rights from those who differ from you...
Im not forcing my morals on you. You can stay as close minded and bigoted as you want. What we democrats and liberals and many independents are asking for is to keep our rights to live as we want and prosper.... would it be nice for you guys to wake up? Yea but don't worry, none
