Rep. de Baca: "Hispanics consider themselves above blacks"

A Republican official in the US has resigned over comments he made to the BBC that "Hispanics consider themselves above blacks".

Fernando de Baca, the chairman of the Republican Party in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, also said Hispanics "won't vote for a black president".

Mr de Baca spoke last week but resisted calls from his own party to resign, saying he was quoted out of context.

He said he decided to step down because of the "media circus" that developed.

Mr de Baca had been approached by the BBC's Jon Kelly for comments on the presidential election campaign at the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque, part of Bernalillo County.

He was explaining why he thought John McCain would do well in the state, which has large population of Hispanics.

"The truth is that Hispanics came here as conquerors. African-Americans came here as slaves."

He said the Latino emphasis on hard work and family values and the Catholic Church's opposition to abortion made the community naturally conservative.

The remarks appeared on the BBC News website on its Talking America blog.

After calls grew for his resignation, he said the comments were taken out of context and that he was referring to views held by the older generation of Hispanics.

"Snippets were used to try and embarrass me," Mr de Baca, 70, told the Associated Press (AP) news agency.

He said a "media circus" had developed that was obscuring the election issues.

"It's time to step aside and let the candidates and the political races that are so important to this country and democracy be placed in focus," he told AP.

    • Fact: Latin Americans are not a race, African Americans are.
Comparing the two is like comparing oranges to apples. I know a lot of Black and Asians who are Latin Americans they are as proud to be Asian or Black as the ones who speak English. White Latin Americans can be as prejudice and sometimes more than Whites who speak English.
Hispanic and Latinos are nothing more than stereotypes. Does anyone remember the “N” word? Now we have the “H” or “L” word.
Why do most Latin Americans except such stereotypes or Labels?
I can only speculate, some are here illegally, and will except anything just to get a chance in the US. Some have need of the government programs and as long as it is helping them survive, they will list themselves as anything.
Others sadly enough use them to take advantage of the system. I will explain, a family who lives in a $400K home and has a child going to college gets the same consideration as one who is struggling to pay a $400.00 rent, as long as they both claim to be “Hispanic” The aid is almost the same. Often times more aid for the rich kid.
Government financial aid, programs are something Democrats are big on and a reason you are going to have poor Latin Americans, voting for Democrats.

    • it is what it is,,

remarks from a tex/mex from south texas, lets look at this with some sort of common sense. it apparent by the way you all are sounding off on mr. de baca don't have a clue on how the system does work. the system will always be controlled the the wasp, (look it up for you ignorant MF's), its the way you use the system. no, don't abuse the system, use it to your advantage. get the education, get the position, get the power, now it's up to you. don't depend on the system to give you material things, do something for yourself and clan.
the way i see this up coming election is mcain will win, a hispanic, (not every hispanic), that steps into that voting booth will vote their conscious, the hispanic voter will thing about it, the way hispanic's and black's compete with each other the outcome is written. let me ask this, if a hispanic was running for the top job, would blacks vote for the brown man???

it is what it is.......hermano.....viva free speech..

Blacks and Browns have little in common with each other besides being minorities. There are more blacks in high positions than Hispanics. Most blacks would see it as a step backwards. So your right. Blacs wouldn't vote for a Hispanic. Is that right? No way. We have more in common than we think. Just the way the majority sees our people should unite us. But it doesn't.

      Okay, would you say that?

The folks they're calling hispanics were already here, and victimized no less than the Africans brought over in chains by their European colonial hegemonic conquistodors, out to rape them for their gold and natural resources. Their aboriginal populations were killed off by the millions during the conquest of the New World from the 14th through the 17th centuries.

    • Okay so he probably should not have made such a controversial statement, but to say that he is incorrect is in many ways being ill-informed. The truth is that hispanics don't see themselves on the same level as blacks, and while it may be wrong, like many things that are, it is reality.

I'm also not sure how I feel about him having to resign. I know such a comment was incredibly inappropriate but officials shouldn't have to resign because of the way the media spins their comments (especially if they hold some truth). Its a slippery-slope. One day there will be a brilliant democrat official who will suffer the same fate because forcing officials to resign after stirring up controversy is the norm.

    • This is no Republican ploy. This is how Mexicans and other Latinos really feel. Many races see African Americans as slaves. The only non-immigrants in the U.S. No other race gave so much to slavery and is yet to been seen as equals. We can't change the past and you can't legislate how people feel. As a person who grew up on West Texas. I have seen good relations and bad. If it is the elders who are teaching this then they should also teach. Just because the white media only shows broken black families doesn't make it so for most African Americans. Blacks love family, we go to church we vote Republican and Democrat. Are most African Americans Democratic. Yes. The Democratic Party has done a good job or hiding it's slavery past. This divide will never change. Blacks see Hispanics as imigrants sneaking into the country and Hispanics see Blacks as slaves. No president is going to change that.

    • From the beginning of history one group has been pitted against another. Who stands to benefit from the factioning and conflict? Those in control -- no matter who or when in history.

Color became an issue because it was easy to identify those "not like us". However, in the absence of color differences; family, country, education and level of wealth determined the lines of separation and treatment. It has happened in all races and all regions on earth -- it is a human trait.

This is nothing new. Wake up common man! Knowing is the first step towards resolution.

    • LOL...just one more thing to divide people. What slice of America does not believe in hard work? This country is divided, not buy color, but by the wallet(purse), and that divide is getting larger. Interestingly all of our colors are getting closer. Viva la common sense!

    • A honest person. Obama's campaign's main flaw the hispanics.

Obama wanted to build his support around blacks, hispanics, asians, american indians, and feminsts.

This way Obama could write off the white males, and non feminist white females.

Obama did this in the famious guns and religion speech.

Obama's got 93% of the black vote, but what about the rest. Is white guilt enough to get a white man to vote for him is a private voting booth.

This is Obama's politically worst error.

    • The Latinos didnt come as conquers, it was the Spanish. Anyway it's funny that the Republicans use Latinos as some kind of antedote, while they dont even want them in thier country.

    • I can't believe someone would say something like that to a news agency and then be surprised about the attention it grabs. At least he had to resign after saying something as nasty and racially charged as that.

    • ReThugs have been pitting African Americans against Hispanic Americans since Reagan. Neither ethnicity is overly impressed with the political party known for solely fiercely looking out for the exclusive interests of rich middle aged white men over the fortunes of all other.

Hillary Clinton played that same card during the Primaries in Indiana, Illinois, California, New Mexico, and Florida. The ploy backfired every single time. Hispanic Americans have the same political concerns that are belabored by the rest of the American citizenry. They too want better education, affordable housing, good jobs, a decent living wage, health care, and a clean environment. Like every other ethnicity registered to vote in America, Hispanics know they are worse off now than they were during Clinton's Presidency, when most of them were fanatical Republicans. Now, many of them, particularly young and new voters, are registering as Democrats, and it has nothing to do with skin color.
