Any such pardon, said Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, would be seen by the nation as an admission of wrongdoing.
The top Republican on the panel, Arlen Specter, noted that there's no indication of that happening. But if it does, he said, he'll be quick to push back.
Mukasey appointed a special counsel Monday after an internal Justice probe found the firings to have been improper.

Bush's administration should not be allowed to politicize the judge-making and judge-firing process without a definite repurcussion, or else a precedence that this type of behavior is "okay" will be set.

You had better make room for some Democrats in the same facility you want to put Bush in. George is right there with Lincoln, Wilson and FDR as presidents go. The problem is, we are stuck with many on Capital HIll in the same genre.

We need to start impeachment process so he is under investigation and by law can't pardon anybody, we don't have too go through with the impeachment just start it so he is a real lame duck.

No, lets wait til he's out of office before we do anything. Vincent Bugliosi made the argument that even if he is impeached, he still gets to wake up every morning a free man. With all the destruction he's caused, he needs to be prosecuted and be actually held accountable for his disastrous policies.

You have to be kidding! HOw many criminals did Clinton pardon? Where was this "warning" when he was getting ready to steal the silverware? Did we hear anything over Bill makings up his own law pardoning these criminals and rapist of our country/constitution. This is laughable if not astonishing.
Just when you thought that Dems could not sink to a more partisan low those morons come up with this. I never would have given it a thought if Leahy had not of brought it up.
No wonder we have nothing but contempt for many on Capital HIll. - 3 years ago

That's not a very good excuse now is it? Since an argument can be made against every president that has made pardons it makes no different what party they were in.

The point is that very little can be done about them so it is not a partisan issue.

It sounds like the posturing of others senators when they called to impeach Bush. They make noise like an old Model-T, and then just sputter out.

The difference there is that Congress has the authority to impeach and even the obligation to when evidence of wrongdoing is brought to them like it was by Kucinich.
The posturing in that case is those that try to ignore it and hope it will go away when the whole system of checks and balances has been ruined

The trouble is that Congress has no power over pardons, nothing like a veto override so they can't back up that warning.
What does Specter think can be done to "push back?"
Libby was convicted and pardoned but nothing was done about that so I very much doubt that anything would be done about a pardon in this case.

Your disdain is note worthy because of who you choose to protect.
No other administration took into account the prosecutors party affiliation.
By any judge, This admin's firings were purely political.

The truth as it exists currently is killing us financially and environmentally, figuratively and literally. WE do not know what the whole truth is. We need to in order to survive. Discovering the truth may well be worth the money.

ESKCSG:
Its like Senator Leahy said, if Bush gave anyone a pardon at this point, "it would be considered an admission of Bush's guilt" by the whole country. I think at that point he would be impeached without hesitation by both Republicans and Democrats. The Special Council has to give Mukasey a report within the next 60 days. It will be interesting to see what happens. The whole country needs to pay attention to this, along with what is happening on Wall Street.
Bu$hCo's tyranny is no different than Putin's tyranny. Both play the privatize profits/socialize losses game. Both have their own private army that tells the socialized regular army what to do. Its also similar to the way Saddam ran his regime. Bu$hCo has killed tens of thousands of innocents, non-combatants, during this seven year war, this endless war. Is that not terrorism? "War is not Pro-Life!" War is terror!
As a people we tend to get angry at other people who reflect our worst character traits. We can even hate them because they reflect the hate we feel for ourselves. We are all mirrors of one another, so when we see things we like about ourselves in others we tend to gravitate to them. When we see things we do not like about ourselves in others we get angry, not at them, at ourselves. If we hurt them because of our anger, we hurt ourselves. We diminish ourselves further. When we torture others, we torture ourselves.
If we want to change that modus operandi, we have to first recognize that it is happening, accept that it is happening, and simply decide that we do not want to do that any more. Enlightenment is the recognition. Once we are enlightened, we cannot become unenlightened. If we continue to do what we do not like to do, we at least know that it is our choice to continue in spite of our enlightenment, and suffer the consequences.
Sorry for the length of this. We are all responsible for the shape our world is in. If we do not like it, we can change it. Pssst... Do something!
