Because the format allows for very little give-and-take between Palin and Joe Biden, her "values"-oriented debating style stands a good chance of succeeding. The central feature of her debate style is that rather than getting bogged down in facts and specifics, she instead says what she is for and what she is against using terms like "healthier," "stronger," "more prosperous," and "fairer."
Andrew Halcro, who has debated her, explains his experiences debating Palin:
I've debated Governor Palin more than two dozen times. And she's a master, not of facts, figures, or insightful policy recommendations, but at the fine art of the nonanswer, the glittering generality. Against such charms there is little Senator Biden, or anyone, can do.
That sounds like a backhanded compliment, and perhaps it is, but that doesn't change the fact that Palin's debating style works, as you can see for yourself in this video that I edited together.
For the video, I looked at her past debates and randomly grabbed six answers that I thought were pretty good. These weren't cherry-picked answers, they were just the first six answers that I thought she handled effectively. (I only rejected one answer in which I felt she was too defensive about her experience.)
Given the debate's format on Thursday night, I expect Palin will do just fine. I will be quite surprised if she gets caught off guard or has a moose-in-headlights moment.
I don't think she'll display much in the way of specifics, but she will get the values-oriented language right, and that should be good enough at least for a draw, and that will mean she beats expectations.
Of course, the real political issue in the debate isn't whether or not Palin meets or beats expectations, it's whether she is able to make a case for John McCain that John McCain hasn't yet been able to make for himself.
That's something no vice presidential candidate in history has been able to do, and should serve as a reminder that in the end, this election is still between Barack Obama and John McCain.

My opinion is that McCain chose Palin because she is a young, pretty, hard-headed woman -- a perfect contrast to his charming older man attitude --
however, I believe Obama chose Biden for the same reasons! Biden is a loud-mouth who wouldn't have a problem bashing McCain (something Obama can't do), Biden is older and has been in Washington FOREVER (which tries to play off Obama's inexperience), and he's a white Catholic male from Delaware/Pennsylvania with a compelling family story.
I think it would be shallow to bash Palin as a purely superficial choice when I think Obama had the same idea with Biden.

.......the vp pick has always been about stengthining the ticket, whether is be for the state or the demographics.........
.........but........biden is very specific about his part in the obama campaign..............he is very specific on where they will go together and what he can do for it individually.............
..........palin has not been able to do this..........
...........i am sure the mccain campaign wanted palin for certain strengths......and hse does have them......but........... when it came down to using them they pulled back and made her into a puppet................

....even republicans admit that palin isn't prepared to co-anchor the country ………and the best they can say about the debate is that they are impressed by her “folksiness" and "ability to connect to people” ???!!!

I have grown so I will offer a kind word for palin 1st! I will offer this compliment in the spirit in which palin her self would spew it! "Well that there gal sarapalin from up yonder Alaskan country, well shes gots good memory skillin, every answer was perfectly scripted an well dog nabit she say every word without big word front of her ta reads it!" Now back to educated comments, this woman was so attack driven did anyone else notice her temper flair during a repsonse to Senator Biden's well informed and on point statement. Check the video her nostrils fared! Also, all I ask is that we have her spell the big words she memorized and give definition of the words? Achillie's Heel for example!!

When she knows the issues, and is passionate about those issues, she is an excellent debater. When she has no idea what she is talking about, she has no idea what she is talking about.

Don't forget that much of American resents the kind of elitists that perform well in debates. Palin's stupidity could just be the Republicans' secret weapon. Much of America likes dumb. They feel comfortable with it. Smart people make them feel bad. Tom Morello made an insightful point along these lines during a recent interview:
"When I was watching the conventions on TV, the thing that made me most skeptical about the possibility of Obama becoming elected was when his wife was giving a speech. I grew up in small town Illinois, and I was trying to watch her speech through the eyes of the neighbors who I grew up with and the parents I grew up around, and I don't know that America has the ability to vote for a candidate whose wife is African American and smarter than they are. I hope that I'm wrong, it would mean that it's a different country than the one I grew up in, but we'll see."

Joe Biden just needs to give Palin enough rope to hang herself with. She's proven she can do that quite well without help from anyone. Unfortunately he likes to talk and talk and talk some more. The man knows what he's talking about, but isn't always aware his audience has gone to sleep. Palin won't make it into the White House, but Hollywood will be knocking. Since the moderator's a women, hopefully she'll be tough on Palin if she doesn't really answer the question. Or, at least point out those flaws.
I am concerned that the American people are ga-ga over her and will forgive her lack of real substance. Gees, when you have a 72 yr. old president the vice pres. should be someone who wasn't picked to pander to women. Furthermore, if women fall for the gender issue which means "vote for me because I happen to be the same gender as Hillary." that would be totally ridiculous and tragic. Women who supported Hillary have little in common with Palin's stance on just about anything.

My mother always said anyone can talk a good game and win your heart. Not hard to believe when you are talking about Politicians. People love rhetoric, we are amused by it. If you speak well and are convincing most likely you will win over the masses. So it makes you wonder do people believe anyone with a big mouth that spits out words in a eloquent manner have the countries best interest at heart? Learn the art of rhetoric and argumentation and you will rule the world.

I'm sorry but knowing and being able to debate the politics of a state whose population is less than the population of the city I live in (Austin) is not impressive to me.
Regurgitating vague, broad talking points and not talking specifics is going to lead to Palin being eaten alive when she debates Biden.

i think the most important thing to take away from all of this is that we are all aware of how deceptive debate can be. it is a skill based in trickery, lies, and appealing to the sensibilities of the majorities. its time to stop buying into the lies and demanding a little bit of honesty, or at least joining forces to try to reveal politics for the dishonest thing it is.
i am not convinced that either one of the candidates or their running mates are fit to run this nation, and yet i am voting for barack. i think it is ignorant to defend or attack the "other" just because i have made a decision for who to vote for, and yet i am guilty of this, and so are so many people in this country.
do you all really buy into this? are you convinced that this government is set up in the best way? or are you, like me, just falling prey to the hypnotic simplicity of the two party system? i don't know about you, but i'm sick of hearing about the fight between the two parties, one an unstoppable force, the other an immovable object. i'm sick of the people who are in control of my life telling me that i am in control of my life when they know damn well i'm not. i'm sick of lies and i'm sick of ignorance, and i am scared because i don't know how to do anything significant about it.

She was picked to get the undecided vote. Intelligent people know, understand, and vote on the issues and already know who they will be voting for... less intelligent people, often referred to as the "bubba" vote, go by looks, cutesy soundbites, and perceived strength. Oh, and also, "who would I have a beer with"...
She may lose the debate, but she will win votes. Biden may win the debate, but will gain few, if any, votes. She was picked to get the undecided vote, and she will. Biden will not attack her, or expose her weaknesses... the Dems fight like gentleman, she is s dog with lipstick and may surprise a lot of people.
But winning a debate and the bubba vote does not matter to most... most see her as for what she is... an imposter and a bozo that interprets the bible literally. Lets just hope for the best...

She was really picked because Mccain thought that undecided American woman (and especially Hillary supporters) would be so naive as to vote for his ticket solely because Palin is a woman. Unfortunately that seems to be working somewhat (although the polls on this are sketchy at best) which makes me sad that people really do still vote for a ticket based solely on surface characteristics (i.e. don't vote for Obama, he refused to wear a flag pin!) and don't take the time to investigate and learn about the candidate they ultimately choose.

All of the debate experts (or, former perts) are saying that Biden must avoid any confrontations with Palin and stick to the issues presented by host, Gwen Ifill.
If he sees an opportunity to go after McCain, he will. If he sees a chance to talk up Obama, he will.
Anything even vaguely resembling an attack on Palin may be too costly if spun a certain way by conservatives.
I have good reason to believe that Gwen won't let Palin or Biden get away with being too generic in their responses.

The only moment where one of the other members of the debate attempts to speak she immediately interrupts him and tells him it isn't his turn to talk... If you think Joe Biden is going to sit silently by and let her spout the lines shes been fed word for word without any type of retort than you obviously don't know Joe Biden...

You may be right Krag2112.
I hope you're right and the polls seem to be reflecting the appearance of dissatisfaction with McCain/Palin among voters.
But....you can never under-estimate the voters ability to be swayed.
Palin could very well fire off a bunch of folksy, simple-minded answers in the debates and actually win people back!
There is a power in simple-minded bumper sticker answers that seems to win voters over again and again.
My fear (and I hope I'm wrong) is that she'll sit there for 90 mins looking cute and saying nothing more than "I love Jesus" and "I'm a hockey mom who'll defend America by bombing Iran!" --- and it'll work!

I expect her to do just that. In some ways, Biden is in a no win situation here. But in the end the die hard conservatives are going to think she won no matter what she says or does. Those people are set in stone and aren't changing. Just like many of us on the other side feel like we have seen all we need to see. It's the people in the middle, the people who saw the Gibson and Couric interviews and are starting to wonder if there's any substance there who she's going to have to win over. Maybe she can do that with a bumper sticker. And maybe there's more substance there than we thought and she was just having an off night with Charlie and Katie (though I doubt it). We'll see. But I don't expect it to be a blow out. And I think there are more pitfalls for Biden in this thing than for Palin. She can always fall back on being adorable (as the SNL writers pointed out). Crob I don't think that number is 50%. The Palin bubble has burst. Nephwrack is right, it was a stunt pick and it has played out. Now McCain will have to deal with the consequences and move on to the next stunt (like "suspending" his campaign). All the while it's becoming more and more obvious to all of America that McCain is desperate and erratic. McCain miscalculated. Sure she fired up the base of the party, but she also fired up Obama's base and has caused independents to seriously question his judgment. Even the right wing hacks on this site can't mount a credible defense of Palin. All we get is warmed over talking points and Obama insults. Karl Rove has been proven right yet again.
Nearly half of all voters are idiots. Or just plan crazy.
No one has ever heard of Gov. Palin prior to a month ago -- and nearly half of America is insisting that she is the most brilliant woman on earth! Somehow the hockey Mom mayor of a town of 500 is now the most brilliant foreign policy expert on earth....because Alaska has a pipeline and Russia is visible from certain far remote sections of the state.
She can't name a single Supreme Court case -- 50 percent of voters still insist (with increasing delusion and hysteria) that Palin is "more than qualified to be President."
She can't name a single newspaper that she's read -- 50 percent of voters still insist (with ever growing mania) that Palin is "100 times more brilliant than Obama"....a Harvard Law graduate and Constitutional Profesor.
No matter what Palin does 50 percent of voters will NEVER admit that she is an idiot. Never.
We all watched the horrifying interview with Katie Couric -- an interview so shocking that Conservative columnists demanded she resign from the ticket -- and 50 percent of voters STILL insist (with mounting insanity) that Palin is 1000x more brilliant than Alexander the Great and Gen. Patton combined. She's brilliant dammit! T'aint no one EVER gonna tell them otherwise.
Are voters idiots or is their irrational hatred of Obama so out of control that they will destroy the country rather than let a Harvard Graduate (you know, an "elitist") win the nomination?
How do we account for this insanity running rampant amongst the Palin zombies?

Second, what exactly is involved in running a town? Please rattle off the 5 major logistical challenges she personally faced? What? You cant name a single one? Thats because like most voters your repeating (correct me if Im mistaken) talking points and not facts. "Being Gov. is hard work!" yet when pressed to explain what exactly Palins job duties really are....none of her supporters seems to know. They just know that they hate Obama with a white hot intensity and they would rather burn America to the ground (by electing Palin) then elect that Muslim commie terrorist President.
And approaching the election from that irrational point of view....nothing Palin will ever do, no matter how stupid she is, they will never, ever, admit to it.
Palin could say that she believes nuclear weapons have no radition and only destroy buildings and not people....and people would still be insisting that she is absolutely right and the most brilliant person on earth!

So now raising a family is the same as going to Harvard? And she is cute. Totally ignorant of the Constitution and Supreme Court rulings? Yup, she sure is. Does that phase her followers? Nope, cuz she is cute!
Now being a Gov (no matter how small the states population) must be "better" experience than being a Senator. It didnt used to, but the hatred of Obama is so pure that the rules must be changed so that having limited responsibilites over 500 people is now perfect training for ruling over the most complex military and economy in the world.
And again we ask, "What exactly was Sarahs job duties?"
None of her faithful follwers seems to know, but they "know" it must be more complicated than anything Obama has ever done! They feel in in their gut, to paraphrase Bush. And their gut hates Obama!
Standing up to her party? List the top 5 "Mavreick Moments" of Sarah Palin that so outraged the GOP that everyone was shocked that this wildcat actually got the nomination?
Her followers (worshippers?) keep insisting that she had a gun in one hand and a Bible in the other and shot 5 GOP party members defending her values and the good people of Alaska. Shes a wildcat that will stand up to the GOP!
Cute story.
But when pressed for actually details of what exactly this "maverick" did that was so heroic --- they cant really seems to articulate it.

That would have pretty much locked the presidency down for him. He didn't. Get off Obama's jock. He's not the second coming. "hahaha, lemme break this down. Obama has been raising two beautiful children with a wife who can intellectually destroy Sarah Palin before it gets warmed up. Having five children makes her no more important than Mr and Mrs Obama having two. As for taking on her party, exactly how did she do that? Because there are examples of Obama doing just that: http://feingold.senate.gov/~feingold/issues_ethicsfacts.html
He didn't run for governor, he ran for the Senate, and won. His community outreach efforts trump sitting in an office collecting a paycheck to preside over local governments. He actually made a difference in the communities of Illinois - Sarah Palin kept the Big Business subsidies rolling in. Personally I'd rather have the former over the latter.
But if you agree with overturning Roe v Wade, increases in gun deregulation, destruction of public properties for the purpose of 'scouting' for oil, our ultimate withdrawal from the UN and overal hatred for America by the rest of the world, by all means vote for the two people who can assure you of all those things. Please try not to delude yourself however, by inflating the few accomplishments Palin can honestly claim and say that they are indicators that she is better than her opponent or his running mate. Be honest with yourself (nobody else has to know) and really think about it - prove it to yourself with research and citations first, then take it to the world at large. It will make you seem smarter and might even bring people to your cause. Citations==intelligence ^_^ - 3 years ago

Citation please? What exactly makes Palin a better choice than Obama?
And can we please remember as a class to compare apples to apples, and oranges to oranges? Obama is running for the top seat, and is amply qualified for the position. Palin is running for the second seat, and she has yet to really prove to anyone who is honestly listening that she is ready for the role. Saying you're ready does not make you ready. - 3 years ago

sleepnomore, you my friend, are an anomaly.
Considering this, I personally would be so appreciative, in fact rather impressed, if you would be so kind as to enlighten us all with the facts of what makes Palin's credentials so far superior than Obama's or Biden's.
Please break it down for us all because no one else in your crew seems to be able to accomplish this.
Please explain to us ignorant souls about Mrs. Palin's superior foreign policy experience, her economic and health care initiative, hell, could you please break down her much tooted party reform? Anything?
I'm talking details.
Please, sleepnomore, could you use just a bit of your wakeful hours to do us all a favor and clue us in. Bring us to the other side.
Really, I'd love to hear it.

someone should do this for biden's debate skillz, i would but i don't know much of much about videoclip editing. i admit, it is worrisome, but it doesn't stop the fact that her basic values, aside from "Alaska's Best Interest" are TERRIFYING if she gets into office.
notice she didn't mention that she also cut funding for hospitals so rape victims had to pay for their rape kits to get tested in hospitals (those bad boys can cost around $300.00)

I still don't believe she's going to do well Thursday night. She's so out of her depth now, as anyone would be if they won the lottery and were selected as VP out of the blue. This video doesn't show a lot. Biden's a clever dude. And Sarah's no pitbull.

I think we should point that the global knowledge that she needs to have for the vice-presidential ticket is what is affecting her, as she has shown she does not have that knowledge and I really doubt she will be able to get in a few weeks.
It is not the same for her to know the issues of Alaska than to know the issues of the world, remember, our presidents make decisions that affect the entire world. - 3 years ago

Everyone looks like a Hall-of-Famer on a highlight reel. I'd have to see more to really judge for myself.
But the premise that "the [debate] format allows for very little give-and-take" which benefits Palin's "'values'-oriented debating style" does make some sense. See George Bush in 2000.

yeah one big difference.. there will be no notes. this is no open book test here folks, this is on your toes, thinking for yourself, countering points. people have said obama was great but all he does is read off a prompt, well we saw that he doesn't need it on the debate. all palin has done in the video is read notes and prompts. the debate is her chance to show if she can think. i believe the odds are against her from the looks of her live interviews without notes or prompts....

"And she's a master, not of facts, figures, or insightful policy recommendations, but at the fine art of the nonanswer, the glittering generality."
Oh goodie!
Must... follow... glittering...generality...so...shiny!
Who wants a VP that has policy recommendations?
.....
The only thing she seemed to do well on was being assertive. At the present moment, that's something both her and Obama could use more of.
From the clips, She didn't have any recommendations but she can point fingers very well. She'll fit right into Washington!

The difference between the debates we have seen so far and the debate coming up tomorrow night is the fact she is going from State level to National/world level.
Unless she knows her stuff, she is going to falter and we will see right through her.

Entering a debate with exceptionally low expectations can be a terrific weapon.
All she is tasked with is not coming across as a clueless blundering moron (as she has in every interview).
She did very well in the clip above. If she does the same with Biden she will assuage many fears that potential voters have.
Strategically this would be a brilliant move.

Nice Propaganda! However the ability to debate is NOT the issue with Palin, it is how she sees the ISSUES facing America and what kind of solutions she understands... Not to mention preparing to be a governor is NOT the same as getting ready to be 2nd in line for President of a country with 2 wars, a financial crisis and a climate crash!

And Obama is ready for that...she's VP not running for President.
He is and he doesn't have more than she.
Experience shouldn't even be a factor here since we all know history and Abraham Lincoln didn't have a whole lot and he did a whole lot while in office.
So why is she so important when it comes to experience but Obama gets a pass?

I merely find that I disagree with McCain/Palin's vision of what's facing America TODAY and as a result- I can't agree with their JUDGMENT of what to do about it!

Worse, he's had melanoma cells cut off of him repeatedly.
My grandfather died of Melanoma and a close family friend recently. You have a long life expectancy with it but that doesn't mean it won't affect you. Perhaps he is in stage 1 right now and its very controllable since generally the cancer attacks the surface of the skin before it penetrates.
However Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and can spread easily.
He also doesn't have to fully DIE (how morbid) for Palin to take seat. All that has to happen is he is no longer able to competently run the country. Lets say the cancer does come back (if you've noticed he has had moles cut off during the campaign even so its not that unlikely). Should he go through intensive chemotherapy for six months (max time for radiation and chemo sessions... i believe) then with his age he may not be able to continue running the country and will either permanently or temporarily give his seat to Palin.
There are a number of ways Palin can walk into the top seat and it isn't just him dying.
Im a bit less concerned with "ageism" as you put it than I am with the racists who circle Obama's campaign and say "I will never vote a black man into office." or the ones who just want to whack off to Palin.
This Ageism you call out is much more grounded. There is no good reason for racism... but concern over the fact that a man is 72, is on medication for his cholesterol and who is a recurring melanoma patient... of course that is legit.

You are the type of person that I'm talking about...deceived by what he wants you to see instead of what's going on.
That's how magicians work. They show you one thing while their other hand makes things happen and then you're in awe over nothing but perception.
You're like a German talking about Hitler. Hugo is no Hitler...but the idea that Hitler was a great leader was shown in how he turned the German economy around and how he was well loved for that...however he was doing evil things.
That's Hugo. Anyone that has to name call so vilely and strongly and not be able to take such taunts he dishes out is not a good person or has the goodness of humans in mind more so than the goodness of himself.
