The UK's most senior officer has resigned. He's faced harsh criticism and pressure over the race row with the Met's Asian officer Tarique Ghaffur, and his handling the events surrounding the police shooting death of Jean Charles de Menezes.

    • It's been coming for a long while, hasn't it? Certain wings of the press have been calling for his resignation for so long that he was starting to overshadow sensible debate about the challenges the Met is facing and their handling of them.
