Florida teacher uses 'N' word against Obama

dissimulator

A Florida middle school teacher faced disciplinary action after using the word "nigger" to describe Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, WJHG's Kristy Wolski reported.

The 7th grade teacher, Greg Howard, asked his students what "change" stood for in relation to the Obama campaign and proceeded to write out the acronym "come help a nigger get elected."

The school suspended Howard without pay for 10 days and removed him from his position at the school.

"That shouldn't happen," said Billy Delahunt, an Obama supporter. "Because they're there to learn, they're not there to discriminate."

Jackson County's Deputy School Superintendent confirmed that the teacher used the racial slur in class and that such actions would not be tolerated.

But school officials said Howard has been transferred to Jackson County Adult Education Program, where he will continue to teach.

    • wow. so never in a million years would anyone have thought we would have a black president. i am rooting for obama all the way. because i feel that the world needs a change. we need more black in the whitehouse. and i'm not talking about, the black drivers or black security guards, nor am i refurring to the black maids or the black suits they wear. i'm talking about a black president.

it's funny because now, people are beginning to let their "true" colors show. never thought racism is as big of a problem as it is in today's time.

it shouldn't be black/white power. everybody should just try and get along. [ha, that'll never happen].

as i said before i hope he wins, and i hope he does one hell-of-a- job at it. I SUPPORT OBAMA.

****and as for the teacher. he shouldn't be allowed to teach. i'm pretty sure if a black teacher referred to mccain as a "cracker" [no offense] he'd be fired and probably not allowed to teach ever again. [just the truth]

    • Teachers are regular average people with opinions and points of view. Does that make what this person did right? I don't think so, but I also think that my child should be able to express herself in such a way as to defend her own position.

Whether we like it or not, this situation probably opened up a dialogue. It exposed children to the reality of society. You're going to run across people who do not believe the same as you. You might as well learn early on how to handle yourself.

That's not what I was saying.

I was trying (and apparently failing) to make the point that my daughter needs to be strong enough to defend her own position on the matter. Am I advocating that she be a racist...no of course not. I think she should speak up and challenge it. Let the teacher know that she finds it offensive and be articulate enough to tell him/her why.

I agree with you in theory, but it is not pragmatic. The "word" needs to be discussed, but not until a healthy dose of education is done on all sides. How could seventh graders have the depth to express their feeling about a subject that has no official or universally accepted definition?

    • And the "word" continues to destroy its users. Bring back Dave Chappelle. His laughter was slowly killing the word.

    • Fortunately there are actual teachers still teaching. Lots of them are just collecting a paycheck and putting in their time. I have a great love for the profession but am concerned about the outcome. Part of the answer is to stay involved. Ask your kids what's going on in school, what's being said, what's being done. Don't blindly accept that the kids are getting what the need and deserve...make sure of it!

    • This just goes to prove that if not for anything else but the sanctity of the young, well meaning adults either Republican or Democrats but especially the latter that are still undecided should do the right thing. Vote for the more plausible of the candidates, Obama in order to usher in an era that not only changes the political landscape of America but its national psyche too.
The "Greg Howards" of this world would always exists but its for the collective good to render them inert.

    • Besides the disgusting, narrow minded "race"ism, Obama's half fu*king white. This guy should be banned from teaching of course, poisoning childrens' minds.

    • A friend of mine participated in a Democrat march a few days ago and told me this one. Some woman watching the march told some kid who was carrying an Obama sign that "you better hope your insurance is paid up." She followed with "You'll both be dead tomorrow."

      God Bless America!

      I'm see your point, but....
Obama actually represents a historical first. And he's gonna win. Its a different thing than McCain.
Like how there the new movie about the first black guy to get a heisman. I'm sure there were lots of good players that year. But the first black guy is something unique, and something to celebrate.

    • Not a teacher!

When are we going to accept that teacher's are just like everybody else and are more than capable of being racist.

This shouldn't be news. The guy should just be fired from that job. However, he should be allowed to learn from his mistake and teach somewhere else.

There was an entire school in my neighborhood who just had a "Barak Obama Day" celebrating his black heritage and his accomplishments. There was no "John McCain Day." People complained but nobody got fired. Why?

    • dabne:

Why is this not news? Because racism is an accepted form of expression or because you want to ignore that a decent portion of America still harbors discriminatory feelings and views towards minorities?

The fact we could have even a partially African-American president is scaring racist people shitless. We should not give them a free pass by ignoring their racist behavior. This is why the undercurrent of racism still has a hold on American society today.

    • Earlier this week, when my nephew professed his support of Obama, one of his 8th-grade teachers asked him, "Would you really want a Muslim in the White House?" I was stunned when he told me, because, even though we discussed politics quite a bit in my school days, I don't remember anything as blatantly stupid as that being professed by a teacher.

BloxParty, I asked my sister the same thing. She said some complaints were made and the teacher was spoken to. My sister seemed satisfied with how the situation was rectified. I don't even live in that small Southern town, so I think it's best to let them deal with their own problems.

The only reason I posted about it was to show that that kind of behavior isn't isolated to the one incident discussed in the story, and that it's not just discrimination against race, but also religion, that can get reinforced in school.

    • Hopefully this guy will be enlightened in the future, however, I am not optimistic that the reprimand and sensitivity training, much less snark comments will create any type of epiphany except perhaps blind acceptance.

    • Obama represents the reality check people like this teacher will have to confront. Us people "who are darker than blue" are here to stay, and they can either stay blind and bigoted or step into the light.

    • Another sign America is more racist than most people want to believe.

Of course, this didn't really happen. It's all a dream... Or at least that is what the consevatives will tell themselves when questioned on this topic. Behind closed doors they probably think this is hilarious as Obama Waffles.

I hope Obama is elected so we can expose more racists in our society.

    • This is the quieter and wilder political machine running beneath the surface, well, maybe not now.

I just hope this sort of senselessness is in the serious minority.

It's really scary that you can't appeal to people with solid issues. Some people are just screwed up and there's a lot of rampant ignorance running around.

    • Well, not like this actually happened the first time, there will be a series of racial discrimination that will come futhermore into his future, whether he is president or not.

Well, I think the point was not whether potential president Obama will receive further racial comments, but that the teacher was teaching racism to students. We want to eliminate/reduce racism. We don't want to help perpetuate it as the teacher was doing.
