At least three times last night, Sarah Palin, the adorable, preposterous vice-presidential candidate, winked at the audience. Had a male candidate with a similar reputation for attractive vapidity made such a brazen attempt to flirt his way into the good graces of the voting public, it would have universally noted, discussed and mocked. Palin, however, has single-handedly so lowered the standards both for female candidates and American political discourse that, with her newfound ability to speak in more-or-less full sentences, she is now deemed to have performed acceptably last night.

By any normal standard, including the ones applied to male presidential candidates of either party, she did not. Early on, she made the astonishing announcement that she had no intentions of actually answering the queries put to her. "I may not answer the questions that either the moderator or you want to hear, but I'm going to talk straight to the American people and let them know my track record also," she said.

And so she preceded, with an almost surreal disregard for the subjects she was supposed to be discussing, to unleash fusillades of scripted attack lines, platitudes, lies, gibberish and grating references to her own pseudo-folksy authenticity.

It was an appalling display. The only reason it was not widely described as such is that too many American pundits don't even try to judge the truth, wisdom or reasonableness of the political rhetoric they are paid to pronounce upon. Instead, they imagine themselves as interpreters of a mythical mass of "average Americans" who they both venerate and despise.

      JohnA:
How is it that you can assume to know what goes on in other countries and tell the natives of said country how things are run, then turn around and tell them they know nothing about what happens in America because they don't live here?

Hypocritical much? Much too much, I say. Respect everyone's opinion or keep yours to yourself. You do not know everything about everything. You barely know anything about anything!

I don't know everything that happens in other countries or why and I would never presume to tell them what is best for them. It is too much to ask that the people in my country be extended the same courtesy?

You apparently do not read your own posts, because you in fact just did that to Viertrochka(i.e. Russian skinheads and Putin remarks). The reason you were saying this was to devalue her opinon on American politics, which you fail to realize is a world politics issue in addition to a domestic one for Americans.

As I said before, you should respect everyone's opinion or keep your opinion to yourself.

I don't mind her having an opinion, I just think it's important for Americans to know that she has her own agenda and America's best interests are not always included in it. That was my only point. The world is certainly entitled to their opinions. But, lets be frank, most of the world would not have their hearts broken to see The United States crumble and fall apart.

      Sorry J_Jammer...

Aren't you the one who responded with a:

      "What?

      Next!"

...line to kick this thread off?

I'm pretty sure I had that on a t-shirt in junior high along with "CHA-ching!" And now you're commenting on the level of discourse in this thread...

    • It is sickening that America has stooped so low as to even allow this woman to represent us. How insulting... Joe Fucking Six Pack, like we are all beer guzzling trailer trash like her and her family. Winking at America in the midst of one crisis after another. You stupid bitch, we are in two wars we cannot win, and you have the nerve to be cutesy and folksy.

What a shame. The rest of the world is watching and laughing.

The repugs are merely using the same Rovian strategy they used with GW. Remember how folksy that asshole acted during the 2000 campaign? The guy everybody would like to have a beer with. It's disgusting and even more sickening is the fact that millions of dumbass americans suck that shit up. They don't give a fuck what happens to this country, their only motive is to have someone "just like them" as their president. They don't want no damn elitist president.

Also, think about how many comments have been made by voting american males about palin being a hottie. There's a good reason to vote for a commander and chief. (which position palin will assume when mcpain kicks off) The repugs keep playing america for a bunch of drunken brain-dead fools because the majority of americans are drunken brain-dead fools. But hey, maybe that sour realization will go down a little easier fer ya if I give ya a widdle wink.

Fauxsherrr - I always look forward to reading ninepounds6 comments as well... she either makes me laugh or nod eagerly in agreement! (and im usually nodding in agreement if i am laughing anyway!) :D

9lbs6, yea, you're right, America doesn't need a flute playing beauty queen that isn't going to give REAL answers. What a hoax. "straight answer." I mean literally BULLSHIT. "Im gonna give you straight answers, but I wont really give you the answers you want to hear." UUUUHHHHH what?!?!

And Vierotchka - another intelligent commenter - very true, most of the republicans and m/p supporters on here are very angry - and very much in denial.

I can't tell you how many of them still think McCain has the lead and the advantage. How many don't see that the American people are finally seeing what is going on.

Ok, you damn liberal. You wanna use cuss words, you big girl? Kay.
Look, it was a couple of winks, she wasn't flirting.
I don't exactly think that she's the greatest candidate to represent the republican party, but seriously,
      she relates to us.
Ok, her daughter got pregnant blah blah.
Didn't you have pregnant friends in high school?
Because, just because she's got a couple of issues, she winks on TV, and blah blah blah, She's not Trailer trash.
She probably lives in a WAY nicer house than you live,
so don't use that figurative language with this issue,
I'm sure it pissed more than just me off with your deragatory language, which, by the way, was totally unneccessary.

No that's just your crush on Bill Clinton surfacing. You bring him up so often, you must have an undeniable attraction to him. You probably do think he was flirting with you, or at least you wish he were.

There is NO WAY to compare Bill Clinton... a charismatic speaker to an unintelligent fool like Palin. Charisma does not equal flirtation. stop reaching for nothing Jammer and stop defending the horrible person she proved herself to be. Winking at the people Mocking Joe Biden when he sowed emotion. Republicans laughing at his pain. Despicable.
