Student drinks half a litre of vodka in 20 minutes, dies

Image

Jason Venezia, a 19-year-old Warwick Uni student, bet his friends £40 he could down three quarters of a litre of vodka by drinking one shot every 45 seconds.

After drinking 15 shots (half a litre), Venezia was unable to walk or talk and was carried by friends to his room. He was found dead the next day, from acute alcohol poisoning.

His parents have said they don't blame anyone for his death but that "students need to know that their drinking games can lead to sudden death."

    • This can sometimes happen when its a sausagefest. Go out! After the 5th shot, you'll want to chase girls, and forget about your dumbass friends' bet.

    • What an idiot...
      natural selection wins this time.
I AM sorry for his family. It always sucks loosing someone to a legal drug.
It's sad nobody takes alcohol poisoning serisously.
I'm fairly sure he knew the risk he was taking...I don't know how the UK informs kids of alcohol poisining.
Im gonna agree with the smoke weed people...you never hear of anyone smoking weed to death, because it doesn't happen. Ever.

    • Young teens need to know how to be responsible. We don't tell these kids anything and hide the real truth. Then the parents act suprised when their kids do something stupid. Society tells teens don't have sex or drink, your too young. Instead we should be saying things like: wear a condom, you can piss all over yourself if your too drunk ,or yes, you can get pregnant.

Why should we let teens go on in life blinded?

    • And guess what? This is a product that is supported by our government, yet the one therapuetic substance that has no blood on it's hands remains illegal. It's estimated you would have to consume 100 pounds of cannabis a minute for 15 minutes (1500lbs) to induce a lethal dose..

I very much agree. I usually just get angry that I can't be productive, even if I want to be. Not to mention the lack of productivity the next day entails.
      Wastes precious time...

    • When I was the same age I did a similar thing, but luckily made it through the ordeal due to a friends older brother; who happened to be an eagle scout type of guy, showing up at the right time and doing CPR until an ambulance showed.

My fun began with a bottle of Jack and a dice game called three man. 45 min into the game I was still in the 3 man spot and the bottle was empty. What followed was an interesting chain of events ending with me waking up with a tube down my nose and IV's pumping fluids into me.

      Moral of the story

      Stay away from Jack ...

    • If jason was using marijuana as to alcohol he would have woke up and ate everything in the kitchen, but at least he would be alive.

    • There is definitely something wrong with the attitude that my generation has towards alcohol. I don't think this kid's mindset was any different then most people I've partied with. Drinking is fun, but anybody that's had a hangover knows it's not healthy for your body.

    • It's the sad perception that those who can drink a lot are cool and those that can't are weak that perpetuate these kinds of things.

The teasing of OMG you can't hold your liquor can get some to prove that they can by drinking or show how awesome that they are for being able to do this or that with a drink.

I dare not mock people for their inability to hold down such....one because I think that's the dumbest thing to tease people about and two I can't hold mine...at all. ha. I don't drink often. Nor do I care to...ever.

Read the article........he did it of his own volition. Stop crying on about how nasty people make other people drink and make it out that people dont enjoy drinking.

People love to drink and drink silly amounts (I would say the amount he was drinking far from silly going on what I have done).

Some people just cant handle their drink......end of story.

Nobody decides to drink this excessive amount without being goaded to do so.

      Nice try.

Unless you have proof that people sit at home talking to themselves going OMG let me drink this every 25 seconds....

      You don't.

Also the article isn't complete. It didn't state they didn't egg him on.

You think a university guy sitting there stating he can do this wouldn't get hoots and cheers for him to keep going?

Come on and join the reality of the situation. I'll wait for you to catch up.

    • God, that's awful - I remember doing all the fishbowl stuff at Warwick when I was there but this seems really extreme - I hope to God the union didn't serve him those shots.

That said, I don't know how much the blame can be laid on his friends - after all, we've known mates to pass out after too many and they must feel awful. add to that, it was alcohol poisoning, not throwing up that killed him.

On a personal note, a friend of a friend, a successful 27 year old journalist, died two weeks ago after a girls night out where she was drinking the usual white wine - she choked on her vomit in the night and died. in a way she died doing what so many young women, myself included, do every week. It makes you think, doesn't it, you don't even have to be completely over the top like this young lad to fall foul of the booze.

    • This is really upsetting, but I agree with the parents: students need to become aware of the problems of excessive drinking and peer pressure and at least make sure they look out for each other more!

    • This happened at the university I went to. It was on an initiation night. The guy died of alcohol poisoning in his bed. Our uni stopped initiations after that and as I worked in the pub I was then told to monitor all people and what they were drinking and to stop all drinking games if I saw them. Its a big ask from bar staff and bars but it stopped a lot of silly behavior! It's a horrid thing to happen! you just don't expect something like that to happen, but it does, a lot!

    • God that is horrible. It makes me sad to think that people feel they need to prove themselves to their "friends" by pulling stunts like this.
