You just can't get more out of touch than these morons and their supporters.
Here republicans, pick this one :
They sell us the President the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us everything from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But they're never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire
But it's like the man Dave Grohl said, you'll have ask to the artist, which in this case is Jackson Browne, for permission.
And I'd give a months pay for a ringside seat if you do.

Maybe you'll learn who the real whiner is.
When Clinton campaigned, they got the approval of Fleetwood Mac to use "Don't stop thinkin' about tomorrow". Why shouldn't McCain follow suit? It's copyrighted, for god sakes. Obviously everyone downloads songs illegally, but when you're using it for political gain, the law should be followed.

I sort of agree J Jammer.
(I mean unless there's some contract that was transgressed - I dont know how these things work)but I still love Dave Grohl.
When people say "shut up and sing" as they did to Dixie Chicks, or "but he's just a goddamn actor" about Matt Damon - they're missing the point; that those celebrities, having risen to their status both for aesthetic AND intellectual capacities, feel and deserve the right to sing AND speak. or to act AND editorialize.
"MY HERO" has been played in many places, by many people. And naturally as a song on a label, it is a commodity bought and sold, it becomes a piece of media.
BUT - there ARE boundaries to be sensitive to
for example,
Did you know, they were playing David Grey repeatedly at Abu Ghraib during their torture sessions? David Grey made a statement of condemnation, and rightly so. He did NOT WANT TO BE ASSOCIATED IN THE LEAST WITH ABU GHRAIB!!!
Well, Dave Grohl's statement comes from a similar sentiment of misrepresentation.Ultimately, Dave has every right to defend the message and meaning of his artwork.

I think Glenn Miller would speak more to McCain's demo than Foo Fighters.

J Jammer- agreed.
I'm sorry but cry me a f'n river. Its a god damn song. Who knows how many times its been bootlegged, illegally downloaded, and played as jammer said by who the hell knows where.
If they were real artists and professionals, they would simply say that they don't agree with McCain or republicans views but hopefully would still be flattered that their song was used not in support of one party- but to rally everyday people to be politically active and take part in the government at a very crucial time.
Thats the big picture. Not an unauthorized use, this just makes them come off as greedy and harsh. I like the foo fighters but don't like Obama or McCain, do they not think many of their listeners are republican? Is their music so PURE only liberals can understand it? Please, grow up and quit crying.

Why do people automatically put McCain in the wrong?
Why is the artist not the whiner here?
Do you think a McCain place is the worst place this song could be played? Because for all we know the terrorist play it before they go out and suicide bomb a crowded area....they find that to be heroic. Is he going to complain about that usage? White Supremacist could dance to this song at a wedding reception...
The only reason this is of any concern of him is because he's wrapped in political pandering and he doesn't want to be connected to someone he doesn't agree with.
Well that's just retarded. If you heard this song being played with a bunch of skinheads listening would you think David was a skinhead? Guilt by song choice....really?
He just wants to denounce McCain and what better way than state he didn't give his blessing to use his song...and people will believe he has to...when he doesn't.
It's a great way to fabricate disgust.

Why don't the republicans just ask to use the songs? Whether they have to ask or not, it's better press to promote whatever artist you do get on your side than to be slammed for using songs without permission.
And, clearly I can see an artist's concern over the use, legal or not of their song in such a large arena by political campaigns. Whether or not the original meaning of the song is skewed in it's use isn't the main concern, but rather the artist not wanting their song aiding a campaign they don't support.

What's the point in stating how many times are they going to do this?
Because the answer is as many as legally possible because they've done no wrong....unless proved otherwise.

Foo Fighters have issued the following statement:
"This isn't the first time the McCain campaign has used a song without making any attempt to get approval or permission from the artist. It's frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property. The saddest thing about this is that "My Hero" was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song. We hope that the McCain campaign will do the right thing and stop using our song--and start asking artists' permission in general!"

Is it not song artist who state that the song can mean what you want it to mean?
Why is it now that it's harmful?
oh..yeah...because it's being used for something he doesn't agree with.
Ask a song writer to tell what the song means and they'll say what it means to them while at the same time stating that it means something else to someone else and that's what's cool about songs....yadda yadda.
Fair use...no profit. He has no case...just a denunciation of why it was used.

Stating one side is worse than the other is a lie.
Voted down....just because neither is better than the other and no band can dictate who uses their songs when it's fair use. They can whine about it, but it means nothing.

Dave Grohl should chase this one all the way to the bank and sue them for everything they're worth. Why should it be one rule for them and another for everyone else?
