“We need to give people the breathing room they need to get back on their feet,” Mr. Obama said in an afternoon speech here at the Sea Gate Convention Centre before a crowd of more than 3,000 people.
Mr. Obama called on Congress to double by another $25 billion the government loan guarantees for automakers and to temporarily eliminate taxes on unemployment benefits.
In a 30-minute address here, Mr. Obama also called on Americans to embrace a new “ethic of responsibility.” His speech was supplemented with visions of optimism, but conceded that tough times faced the nation in the coming months and years.
“I won’t pretend this will be easy,” Mr. Obama said. “George Bush has dug a deep hole for us. It’s going to take a while for us to dig our way out. We’re going to have to set priorities as never before.”

Hey Obama AND McCain, how about starting by halving the defense budget? But I bet neither of them would do that. Or perhaps Obama should pledge he won't take a salary if corronated? Why can't people see through these politicians? They will allow you to draw out your own money? How sweet of them! What about corporations? Windfall profits? It's almost as if he's blaming us for this mess. I didn't vote for this war. I didn't vote to fund it. I didn't vote to give MORE subsidies to oil companies. I didn' t work on Wall Street and steal billions. I'm just an average working American who can't even aftord healthcare with a healthcare plan! Why don't they ever tell us how they will look to pharmaceutical companies to LOWER COSTS? Or how they will look to the automobile companies to raise fuel efficiency standards enough so we won't have to pay as much for gas? Or gee, perhaps even really work to get alternatives to market? How about not giving BILLIONS to Israel and other countries in the form of tanks and weapons? Perhaps then we would have enough to take care of our own? Yeah, right.

i think Obama is just telling you all what you want to hear
but hell it sure beets a senile old man that wonders around claiming that he know how to fix the country, that he knows where osama is hiding and finding him is easy
but i think we need to look at our other options

To be fair, the tax credit for companies that hire US workers I do like, I've argued for that for years.

I have no debt. I have money saved. I pay my mortgage. How exactly does this plan help me? I'm not rich by any stretch, I'm just a poor skinny white boy from Mississippi, I'm scratching just like everyone else. I don't see how this plan does anything for me. I played by the rules, now we're going to change the rules?

He wants to put a ninety day moratorium on foreclosures. To me that sounds like we let them get three more months behind in their mortgage and then we foreclose on them. As someone who pays their mortgage, I'm not seeing that as a good thing.

i AM A DEMOCRAT, BUT I GOTTA ADMIT, THAT IF I RESEARCH THE FACTS, THAT IT IS NOT THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION THAT GOT US INTO THE JAM, IT WAS CARTER AND CLINTON ADMINS THAT PROVOKED BAD LENDING BY FANNIE MAE AND FREDDIE MAC. WE CAN BS OURSELVES, BUT WE GOTTA OPEN OUR EYES TO WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IF WE ARE TO PREVENT THE WSAME THING IN THE FUTURE

the only way out of the economic crisis is to stop propping up debt and malinvestment (BAILOUTS). America must go from consumers to PRODUCERS and stop spending and start SAVING. Obama and McCain cannot continue raising our defeicit and increasing our entitlements because WE'RE BROKE!! Defeicit spending is not a "healthy" economy. Why don't they give every american a credit card without a limit..... we gave one to them.
(Disclaimer: Please don't take this as a vote for McCain.) I'd much rather Obama won the election considering the "options." I would rather slowly go down with a sinking ship than be blown up by "freedom" itself. - 3 years ago

'WE' have to be responsible?... Rich of him to say that after voting to bail out Wall Street. So how is he going to pay for it all? And if I borrow on retirement (if I even HAVE anything now after the last week) what will I have for retirement? And lending money to state and local govts mean they will have to pay it back, no? Who will pay it back? We will in higher taxes more than likely or a hike in the cost of services, tolls, etc. Either way we will pay. And I still cannot reconcile politicians who voted for Bush's cabinet picks, funding his war and doing nothing to stand up to impeaching him then claiming it was Bush alone who did all of this. Granted, Bush is a main part of all of this but what have Obama and others been doing to change anything in Congress? Many Democrats voted FOR his bankruptcy bill and this war. Bush may have dug us into this, but Congress handed him the damn shovels. Unless Obama commits to getting us off a fossil fuel economy in total in 10 years, I really have no use for his promises that only wind up creating more debt.

ignorance is a very very dangerous thing. if you think that the whole point that Obama is running is to prove that a black man can win the highest office in the land you are sadly mistaken. But you have your opinion and it should be respected but I urge you to take some time and do your own research and understand the man. now granted you may not like him either way but you may get to learn something. the problem with America and Americans is that nobody ever takes the time and understand what they are voting for they vote based on their prejudice and what some pundit has said. - 3 years ago

See, people like you are the reason America is becoming a shit hole. What does race have ANYTHING to do with this? Just because some blacks are impoverished (which is a societal problem), doesn't mean some can't be successful.
That's one of the most ignorant things I have ever heard.

the first policy is to protect people from the stock market crashing on their retirement account. with the stock market plummeting a few thousand points, people need to be able to move their investments around without being hit by huge taxes. i'd rather not be hit twice (market crash and tax for early withdraw). also, this is temporary.
second, those people at the bottom without jobs, a house foreclosed, and with families trying to get by on food stamps are those most in need. this temporary measure will help much more than it will hurt. key word here, temporary.
search for Elkhart, Indiana in the New York Times to get the article about shit hitting the fan. this also hits on why the automakers need some more cash. it's not for the businesses, its for the thousands of Americans who work for the businesses.

I like that obama gives some details, unlike mccain.
I have a problem two of his proposals.
1st, people can start withdrawing from their retirement account. that money is for retirement and should be saved. what are those people going to do when are too old to work?
2nd, no taxes on unemployment benefits. i guess getting free money from the gov't isn't enough, people deserve to not pay taxes on it. what? someone has to pay for it. i guess it will be me and you. sounds like socialism

He's gonna raise taxes whether yall like it or not, but agreed at least he's evolving and attacking the current situation. Don't forget that as well as a shitty President, we've had a democratic congress for the last 4 though....and explain to me why the hell we need to give more money to American automotive companies for being lackadaisical in improving car technology over the last 2 decades and now they can't compete with foreign cars. Thats not my fault, why should my tax money go to save jobs because the companies wanted to sell gas guzzling trucks and SUVS to all the Americans.

Sadly, Obama is not going to be able to do everything he says. Everything he proposes will need to be approved by the house. Remember when Bill Clinton tried to get universal healthcare? Filibustered by the republican majority in congress.
Hopefully democrats will take control of the white house and congress after this election.

first of all, Obama just needs to get in the White House to make a dem house.. that's looking pretty good.
second of all, at least as of 2006, there has been a 51-49 lead of dems to repubs in the Senate
as for the House of Reps.. Dems are already the majority party.
as far as filibustering goes, or simply implying that the Obama presidency is null do to opposition in the Senate and House, your argument is baseless...

Good for Obama. Remember, Obama isn't the candidate who voted 95% of the time with the Busheney gang / Ripublican agenda which got us into this situation - mcSame did as he is a Rip-us-off-again.

The man has got plans! McCain is busy screeching insults at Obama, and Obama is spitting out plans! Hmmm... it's easy to see who's fit and ready to lead. What's McCain going to do when he's faced with the economic problem? Cuss it out?

I love the fact that when McCain holds his rallies he says that he has plans for the economy and never explains what he wants to do about it. Obama on the other hand makes me sick by actually saying what he wants to do to improve it. We don't need all those facts people! McCain has a plan, he knows how to fix this situation, he's just keeping it a secret.
