POW guard claims McCain was not tortured

Image
maasanova
The Republican US presidential candidate John McCain was not tortured during his captivity in North Vietnam, the chief prison guard of the jail in which he was held has claimed.

In an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Nguyen Tien Tran acknowledged that conditions in the prison were "tough, though not inhuman". But, he added: "We never tortured McCain. On the contrary, we saved his life, curing him with extremely valuable medicines that at times were not available to our own wounded."

McCain, who fell into enemy hands after his plane was shot down in 1967, has frequently referred to being tortured and has cited his experiences as a reason for vigorously opposing the endorsement by the Bush administration of the use of techniques such as "water-boarding" on terrorist suspects.

Shortly after his release in 1973 McCain told US News & World Report that his prison guards had beaten him "from pillar to post". After being worked over at intervals for four days, he said, he had become suicidal and agreed to sign a "confession" admitting to war crimes.

    • What was his sacrifice... give me a break... the son of an Admiral... finishing 5th from the bottom of his class? What does that say for his respect for military service... he crashed two planes before ever getting to Vietnam so I am a little less sympathetic... he aimed to fail and he did... Rolling Stone article quoting a fellow POW who claims McCain gave up details like the fact that his dad was an admiral.. that is not what I call a sacrifice... but why would we believe him either... Carl Rove hasn't told us it is okay to do so!!!

    • Dismissing a man's sacrifice and service for purely political purposes. That is as low as it gets. There is no excuse for it.

    • I can search youtube to better credit my words on McCain's talk of his experience and it was overwhelming so check your resources and ponder a bit more,
It's amazing people don't understand we're all entitled to our own opinions, and still get heated about others view on situations....
      Case and point, there's mine
don't like it.. go do something else...
eat a sandwich... ride a bike...
      what is your intention?
politics is what it is and it's sad that most Americans in this country make it what it is because most are as political as an acorn!

    • I find it relevant to politics if we have a candidate that has a history of lying to the public about his "record" so anyone that thinks this isn't relative is basically a fool!
Ethics people, someone glorifying a situation for sympathy is what i would call "sick" because some of the POW were torchured and they usually don't even talk about it!
That's the difference, anyone who's served as I have and millions of other Americans knows that the ones that blab about what they've done are usually full of shit, where as the ones that have been through the shit usually tend to never speak of it again!

All I have to say about his injuries is this, if your shot from the sky and crash then are put in a prison camp with NO medical help what so ever, I don't care how good your immune system is or physically fit you are, your not going to heal properly or in a short amount of time! John McCain is a great man and definitely deserves to be defined as an American, but lying and politics is a mixture I will never side with.

Well don't fucking vote for him then. Is it neccessary to drag everyone who ever sacrificed through the mud? I can't believe anyone would give this story one ounce of credibility. If you served then you know, this is pure bull shit.

He doesn't speak of it, he rarely EVER speaks of it. That's the whole fucking point!

I doubt that he's mentioned his POW experience more than 3 or 4 times in his entire campaign.

Did you support the swiftboat movement in '04 against Kerry on the same reasoning? If not, stop being a fucking hypocrite man.

Shit, politics have gotten too partisan if this is where we've ended up.

    • This story is too sick for words. I've got to stop looking at current, you people are sick, just sick. This whole story is inappropriate. OK, you disagree with his policies, alright, don't vote for him. But this is sick. It's disgusting that this made it on TV. I can't believe this is even a topic. This kind of story is what really scares me about Obama, supporters so rabid they would spread filth like this. We are still all Americans, aren't we? Good Lord! This story dishonors every single person who ever fought for our country. Taking the word of an admitted war criminal over someone that fought for YOU!

    • Whether or not this is true, I refuse to be swayed from the real topics at hand. Swiftboating is still swiftboating if used on the right.

Promoting this story only adds to the false impression that somehow a man's past story qualify him to lead the world's most powerful nation.

For that decision, i refer to his proposed policy, which speaks for itself.

The greatest hero in the world is not immune from bad ideas, bad advisers, and bad influences.

    • This is WRONG guys, pull this bullshit off the front page.

Anyone who's seen my posts knows I'm no fan of McCain, but don't swiftboat him like the Republicans swiftboated Kerry!

C'mon guys, we're above this Karl Rove bullshit. McCain hasn't even made a big deal out of his POW experience in his campaign. There's enough wrong with his political policies that we don't need lies and slander to win this campaign.

I may not like John McCain, but I respect his military service. This is an atrocious, Karl-Rove style attempt on his credibility and it's totally unnecessary. Come on guys, democrats are ABOVE shit like this.

    • Maybe before making statements you should read the entire article. The article claims McCain was threatened with the withdrawal of medical assistance and, while still suffering from his crash injuries, his guards "knocked him around a little". With both arms broken a simple touch would seem like torture. Also, if you read an article from any other source there are claims that McCain was beaten and refused medical attention until they discovered he was the son of an Admiral.

The last paragraph of the article says "As to why McCain, then 36, left North Vietnam with prematurely grey hair, Tran denied it was because of mistreatment. "It's that in prison you think too much."" This whole article smells like a load bullshit to me.

    • So the word of a prison guard no one knows of is credible? Sorry, I may not like his policies or what he has become, but this is just low. But not surprising since it is now obvious that the toxicity of politics spreads to both sides. That's one good reason why I'm not voting for either side this time...They both disgust me. I suppose to either side as well, supporting troops in any war only goes as far as it suits the political agenda at the time. In my estimation it was torture just being there. How soon people on either side forget when consumed when political hatred.

Um... because he is 72 years old, his body is ravaged with cancer, and he broke both his arms with the bailout from his plane... COULD be the reasons why he walks funny!

But seriously, he is 72! He has cancer. And he broke both his arms.

He barely made it through school, crashed five planes and was captured by the enemy where he sang like a canary. If it weren't for his Admiral Dad and Grand Dad we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Absolutely! Total agreement with you on this!

Although, I thank all who served n the military thinking that it was helping our country... Even though unless it were absolutely necessary to defend ourselves, I would advise everyone to avoid military service completely! All of our wars now are just to support corporate greed and those powerful entities benefitting from wars do not care about the citizens or the environment, no, only the profit margins they can gain by infiltrating other countries!

    • Unseal the documents already or shut up.

The guard may be lying to protect his own reputation, or he may be telling the truth as it is in any countrys best interest to keep prisoners alive and well as a bargaining chip, which they most certainly were used as.

But I think it is hilarious that the Republicans are getting a taste of their own medicine! They tore up Kerry for being a patriot because he was running against the coward Bush who ran from the military!

I think this is hilarious! The Republicans themselves have proven that a military record is in no way a good judge of character, and set the standard that a military record was a tool to be dragged through the mud!

How do you like your partys own rules now McCain!

LOL! A maverick sellout now has to pay the price for selling out! I love it!

    • I don't care whether or not McCain was tortured. I am glad he has worked hard to fight against US perpetrated acts of torture. i believe that if he were elected he would have the most comprehensive policy against the use of torture that this nation has ever seen, based on his passion and work around this issue in his political career.

For a look into the horrific torture that the US has committed in the war on terror, check out the documentary "Taxi to the Dark Side."

and your point is neither can fully be trusted? the same goes for McCain and anyone else. My counter-argument is show us the records! We wouldnt have to guess/claim/speculate or anything if they just showed them to us...The alzheimers and whatever else. If its just simply not true and the records prove it, then he has nothing to lose from showing them.

      No.

My point is that he who says they are kind cannot be trusted if you couldn't believe it from someone else in the same manner.

You are believing a man who lied during war and probably lied because his country wanted him to to get things done....and you have no reason to trust him other than he's speaking out against McCain.

Stop telling me that you're going to believe him if it's on paper. You only say that to make yourself sound reasonable only you mean to say it in hopes he doesn't so that you sound as if you're giving him a chance to redeem himself.

That's sad when you claim to want something while secretly not wanting it just so you can look all smart and stuff.

When people plead the fifth people state "OMG what do you have to hide, if you're telling the truth then it shouldn't matter...."

But it does matter...because there are certain situations when it's pertinent to plea the fifth.

He said he was tortured for years. What can't be said is that he's only stating that to win the election...well he's been saying it for years.

You think if he shows the evidence that everyone will be like OH I believe that....or are they going to question that?

Because if they are just going to question it it's not a FANTASTIC idea in sharing the evidence...

I believe people who like him like him and those that don't don't and wouldn't even if he proved to the T that he was tortured.

Because that's how people are...even if they are voting for Obama...they are not nice.

    • J_Jammer:

This isn't McCain incriminating himself. This is McCain sealing his records so no one can view them.

No one is going to be able to prove or disprove this beyond a shadow of a doubt without the actual records. One could speculate that the fact that he sealed those records implies he has something to hide, but without proof it's only an assumption.

Trying to make a partisan issue of this means you don't really have any grounds to stand on, since neither side can definitively prove one arguement over the other. What does strike me as strange is why this man decided now would be a good time to say this. What could he possibly gain from this information?

P.S.- It's worthy to note that he is using his POW status to win votes. Just because he's been doing it for years wouldn't mean it's not the reason he's doing it now. He did have to win those senate elections somehow.

Just because they are voting for Obama doesn't make them nice...the implication is that supporters of Obama are nicer and smarter than those for McCain and that's just not true...they each have equal amount of smart and not so smart people. Neither is smarter than the other based on who they like.

Democrats say that only to feel smarter....and if you have to feel smarter, surely you can't be that smart to begin with. But they are not stupider than McCain's supporters and vice-versa.

People use all kinds of things to get votes: Families, being a hero, being a certain race, being a man, being a woman....it doesn't matter people use what they have to win. Why not?

Dude. I agree with you there. The difference between candidates and their supporters should always be their views on the issues. But they is never the case. I guess people that cant understand the views of others assume the other is inferior or something of the sort.

I like to think I am more open-minded than that. Granted I never understand the opposition, I make attempts to do it. I dont think I'm better than someone I disagree with otherwise there is not point in trying to understand them. I think differences in what people believe has to do with life experiences and the way they were raised. Its possible to change, but deeply ingrained.
Anyways, Thats not the point of this topic. I agree with Lifestudent. If its an issue, show the records and set it straight. Unless he feels like people that don't believe him are not going to believe him either way.

Its not a partisan issue. Although it is being made into one because people assume that someone is not going to believe him because they are just searching for reasons to dislike him and not vote for him.

I just don't understand why he doesn't want people to see the records; Any of his records. I think it is important to know the mental and physical aspects of someone that is going to be the most important persons in this country. PTSD is serious, as are other medical illness. If I vote for him, then it comes up he's got metastatic cancer, or some other terrible disease, with 6 months to live when he takes office, then I would be pissed and honestly feel cheated. Although, I don't think he'd do that.
In medicine, one of the first things they teach us is NEVER trust what the patient says.

If Obama or Ron Paul or Nader came out tomorrow and said I have alzheimers, I would not vote for them.

      Here you go again.

"Just because they are voting for Obama doesn't make them nice...the implication is that supporters of Obama are nicer and smarter than those for McCain and that's just not true...they each have equal amount of smart and not so smart people. Neither is smarter than the other based on who they like."

Direct question: Who has implied that supporters of Obama are nicer and smarter than those for McCain?

"Democrats say that only to feel smarter....and if you have to feel smarter, surely you can't be that smart to begin with. But they are not stupider than McCain's supporters and vice-versa."

Direct question: Has anyone 'actually' said that only to feel smarter or have you decided that you are the interpreter of how people feel? Frankly, this sounds purely like your opinion. Also, regardless of who anyone likes, there happen to be intelligent people in this world and there happen to be stupid people and pretty much everything in between, and quite a few of them post here on current.com which happens to be a open forum.

My point: You perpetually go around posting on topics with the seeming agenda of bringing Obama supporters down a peg or two while simultaneously attacking them with statements like the one above, and when called out and asked to back up your attacks and claims, silence.

I have to say, my friend, it makes you no different than the so called biased Obama supporters you are constantly attempting to bring to task.

"People use all kinds of things to get votes: Families, being a hero, being a certain race, being a man, being a woman....it doesn't matter people use what they have to win. Why not?"

I would really love you to present even ONE instance where a candidate has used his race to gain votes. There are many instances in THIS contest where a candidate has used race to PREVENT people from voting, but I CHALLENGE YOU to present an example of a candidate using their race to gain votes.

Also, as per your 'Why not?' I find there to be no problem with a candidate using the sum total of their life experience to present themselves as qualified for the job they are attempting to get elected to. What is not acceptable is for a candidate to blatantly lie about their records, cover up or embellish them in an attempt to fool the voting public.

At the end of the day, I think the question of McCain's POW guards claims is just another in a line of claims that the public feels he has not been forth coming about, and to continue to hide these from the public will, for a great many people, imply that he is hiding something.

Hiding something only because you are willing to believe someone that has waited until now to say something.

People imply that the guy that uses the monkey was being racist because he stuck an Obama sticker on it.

Did he state he was racist? How do you know he's racist because he decided to use a monkey to place an Obama sticker on it?

      Was he asked?

      No.

People assume he is because of what Monkey and black mean to them.

Calling down evil upon McCain and Palin in article after article is enough to show that they think they are smarter than anyone that likes either of them. If you think otherwise then you need to show where they think they are not smarter...where they actually state that something McCain does was something they agree with or that Palin did....instead of talking down about them as if they are closer to the ground like scum.

Challenge me all you want about Race but you go out there and you ask people why they are voting for Obama they don't know...most of them are voting for him because he's not white.

Why is it that places that have more black population have black representatives? You would want it to be because they were the right person to do the job but how do you know?

If you had a choice between a white man and a black man and their credentials were almost identical who would you pick? Most likely the black man, right? Why not have someone that is closer to you than someone who is further from you?

It's not a bad thing, it's a comfort thing, but it does happen and pretending it doesn't is liken to you stating your blind and you're ok with it.

So you can sit there and ask for direct quotes of this or that, but people don't' have direct quotes from anyone stating that McCain states he's like Bush and yet that's what they state....McCain is like Bush and I bet you've even stated that...where's your DIRECT quote to prove that to be true?

In response to the comfort thing....thats not necessarily true.
Cities with a high population of blacks have black representatives because they are pretty much the only people in that city running for those positions example, my city Detroit, about 90% of the population is black, and not once since the year 2000 began have I seen a white person run for public office
In the 1980's the population was nearly identical with over 76% of the city being black but we had a white mayor, and white city representatives

Next door to us the city of Dearborn has the largest concentration of people of middle eastern descent but they have representatives that are primarily white
It's not primarily a comfort thing it's just these are the only people who believe they have a chance at winning the election

Barack Obama believes the country has changed enough for him to get elected, just like Hillary she thought the country had changed enough for a female to get elected (she should have ran in 04, she would have won)
It is true that some people are voting for him because he is not white but then again it's because he is not republican, or because he is not mccain who looks as though he is on the end of his rope, the average male only lives to be 75, seriously do you want Palin to run this country

    • If this is true...my last shreds of respect for McCain would go up in flames. He torched it beyond repair by choosing Palin, an irresponsible and insulting choice of a running mate that says he's putting just about everything first before the country (!!), but he's still served this country, either in the armed forces or government for a long time, and many of those years (in government at least), he served well, reaching across party lines and being about as unobjectionable as a Republican can be. But if his torture claims are just that, claims, and not the truth...that would be a career long lie-milking that is just putrid.

They keep telling us that there's nothing to the rumours (bush's military service, bush's arrest record, cheney's energy meetings, white house emails, and now McCain's so-called torture as a POW) But they insist on burying and keeping sealed (or destroying) all records of any possible wrong-doing.

    • His arms were broken when his plane was hit. He didn't get top-notch medical treatment for his broken arms in the first two weeks, that is why he cannot raise his hands past his shoulders and over his head. This is a well-established fact.

    • Give me a fucking break! So he cant raise his hands past his shoulders and over his head why? I Cannot believe how easily people are swayed. Think what you will about his policies, but come on! This story would be equivalent to me saying that Barack Obama doesn't and never has played basketball, worked out, or even ran for an official office in his life! I always wondered about Barack's time in the Illinois state legislature...

you've never seen him wave to a crowd have you? Who is easily swayed now?

But I share your sentiments, I do not believe we should be questioning what happened in that prison camp since it is all speculation. You can site that prison guard all you want but what is to keep him from lying?
