Bipartisan House report finds that Bush made "inappropriate" use of executive privilege

A bipartisan report released today by the House Oversight Committee finds that President Bush made a "legally unprecedented and an inappropriate use of executive privilege"; when the administration withheld Patrick Fitzgerald"s interview with Vice President Cheney on the CIA leak scandal. A separate report also criticizes Bush"s assertion of executive privilege regarding his recent climate change and Clean Air Act decisions:

On CIA leak scandal: "The assertion of executive privilege prevents the Committee from having access to a complete set of records and thus results in the Committee"s inability to assess fully the actions of the Vice President."

On the environment: "The assertion of executive privilege under these circumstances has stymied the Committee"s investigation of the [California] waiver and ozone decisions. For these reasons, the Committee finds that the President"s assertion of executive privilege is wrong and an abuse of the privilege";

    • Nothing in this world would please me more than to see Bush/Cheney indited on war crimes. It's not gonna happen cuz noone has the guts to admitt that they sat back and let it happen.

    • Seriously though, I don't give a [censored] about any news concerning this administration that do not include the words 'conviction' and/or 'indicted'. Just... go away...

    • We, and Congress, should have done something years ago. But if I remember right, everyone was too busy waving the flag because of 9/11 to call them out.

      We are acting like we, and Congress, are just now hearing about these things!

      Hang them, and hang the next ones that do this while still in office. We are a democracy! These jackasses work for us! They serve at OUR pleasure!

      When are we going to tke out country back?????

    • As long as George W. controls the Justice Department things are much more difficult. If America votes for Barack Obama, he will be in control of the Justice Department. Thats the change we need!

      America needs a leader who will bring back accountability. Given the choice between McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden, I think Obama/Biden offers the best hope for change.

    • You mean, the same House that wouldn't bring forth articles of impeachment? At this point it all seems so anti-climactic. If they are going to DO something about it then do it. If not, it's just more paper being issued in an election year to play politics.

    • I'm with Incredulous. If the President is theoretically supposed to not be above the law, then prove it. Because if the accountability isn't there for them but it is for us, we've got a problem, people.

      Its not over, they have widened the net. My hope is America brings back accountability and shame to politicians who have abused their power.

      Lack of accountability and shame has led politicians to think they are above the law. No one should be above the law.

      It is definitely time for change in America. We need to bring back accountability and shame. Accountability and shame would be the best deterrent for the future.

      Mainstream media has led Americans to believe we now use the "Court of Public Opinion". Once improprieties have been covered by the "Court of Public Opinion", they just move along. Too many things have been done in plain sight, we should stop moving along. The "Rule of Law" should be our guide.
