W.Va. Machines are switching votes to GOP

Three Putnam County voters say electronic voting machines changed their votes from Democrats to Republicans when they cast early ballots last week.

This is the second West Virginia county where voters have reported this problem. Last week, three voters in Jackson County told The Charleston Gazette their electronic vote for "Barack Obama" kept flipping to "John McCain".

In both counties, Republicans are responsible for overseeing elections. Both county clerks said the problem is isolated.

They also blamed voters for not being more careful.

"People make mistakes more than machines," said Jackson County Clerk Jeff Waybright.

Shelba Ketchum, a 69-year-old nurse retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital, described what happened Friday at the Putnam County Courthouse in Winfield.

"I pushed buttons and they all came up Republican," she said. "I hit Obama and it switched to McCain. I am really concerned about that. If McCain wins, there was something wrong with the machines.

"I asked them for a printout of my votes," Ketchum said. "But they said it was in the machine and I could not get it. I did not feel right when I left the courthouse. My son felt the same way.

"I heard from some other people they also had trouble. But no one in there knew how to fix it," said Ketchum, who is not related to Menis Ketchum, a Democratic Supreme Court candidate.

Ketchum's son, Chris, said he had the same problem. And Bobbi Oates of Scott Depot said her vote for incumbent Democratic Sen. John D. Rockefeller was switched to GOP opponent Jay Wolfe.

"I touched the one I wanted, Rockefeller, and the machine put a checkmark on the Republican instead," Oates said of her experience Thursday.

She said she caught the mistake, called over a worker in the county clerk's office and was able to correct her vote. But she worries other voters may not catch such a mistake.

When asked if she is sure she touched the box for Rockefeller, she said, "I'm absolutely positive."

Putnam County Clerk Brian Wood said on Saturday that he is upset there are "so many negative stories out there and not enough positive ones. We want people to vote. People need to know the facts.

"But we haven't had any major issues. We try to explain to voters how the machines work then they come in," Wood said.

In Putnam County, early voters have the option of asking for either touch-screen machines or optical scan ballots -- paper ballots on which people mark in their election choices.

Wood said some voters might not realize that touch-screen voting machines may take a few seconds to record their choices

    • Hmmm...not randomly switching but specifically selecting the Republican candidate. Not occurring everywhere but only in closely contested areas (Now being reported in other areas and such fraud would likely have a minimal impact in non-closely contested areas).

Now I understand why McCain is confident that he will win.

    • I'm getting a lot of confused replies -- because, apparently, my comment appeared out of sequence. I was responding to someone acting as if ACORN were a grave threat to the electoral processs -- which is silly -- not to any comments about monopolistic (& biased) electronic voting -- which really IS a threat to the electoral process. Diebold should be in jail for helping to steal Ohio.

    • The repugnant republicans will do anything to stay in power as they've proven in the last 2 elections. Electronic voting has too many options for fraud & cover-ups. Already there are reports of voting machine "malfunctions". HELLO-big red flags are already waving!

With such a groundswell of support for Obama & most major polls giving him a comfortable lead, I predict nothing less than a revolution if old white warmongers steal another election.

We’re at the point where we need to bring back paper ballots & Jimmy Carter's oversight.

    • ...Something inside me believes it was isolated - I'm not a Republican, but I have faith in people and I don't think that they really programmed those machines to switch from Obama to McCain.

Besides, I'm sure there are more that three Obama supporters in that entire county; if they were really controlling the machines there would have been more cases.

    • Did these people get lawyers to represent them? Was the issue resolved? I would have been so pissed off I probably would have come out of my voting booth and punched a McCain supporter...

Republicans are cheaters, throw rocks at them :D

    • This is bull man!!! You Republicans call yourselves patriots!!! You're ruining the great democracy, that all of the true great heroes and patriots have died for!!! Shame on you!!! You better quit it, or there will be another revolution in this country!!! Trust me, it won't be pretty... Voting should be handled by the US Treasury Deparment, just like our money is. Our votes are just as valuable and precious as our money!!!

    • Firstly, punch card ballots resulted in hanging, dimpled or pregnant chads. No, not that. Electronic voting machines? Wrong again. NEXT? I give up. I think I'll go back to penis size debate, it's more up my alley - no pun intended.

    • Well, like I've said before you vote does not count, if no one can remember this happened in 2002 also, remember, Al Gore actually won....ah right it was covered up... LoL

If anyone has seen the docu HBO did, maybe it's time you should no? Just follow the link, it will maybe change the way you think, I seen it, and it shocked me on how easy these machines were to hack and not get caught doing it!

    • If they're getting multiple reports of errors with computerized voting, one would hope they'd switch entirely to the paper ballots until the issue could be resolved. But I'm guessing that's too logical for bureaucracy?

    • I have always been of the mind that no vote ever counts. Only two companies currently count votes, they are owned by the same people, they contribute to the Republican party, and no one oversees them.

No matter the method, there are dozens of points along the line where votes can be ignored, destroyed, or changed.

When someone proves to me that my vote actually counts, I will consider not voting Independant for the first time in my life.

Wait a minute, nope... I will definatley vote Independant then!!!

    • one part of me wants to chime in and say "of course the nasty republican voting machine changed the votes! it's a conspiracy!", but another part of me doesn't quite believe it to be as sinister as it seems. technology is iffy--i hardly know how to use my printer. I think the human inability to use or know how to fix complex machinery is more at fault here than a republican scheme.

    • I worked as a "poll technician" for a polling station that used touch screen machines once. I bet the problem is improper calibration of the screen (whether intentional or just careless). If you don't properly calibrate the screen, it thinks you're touching somewhere other than where you actually touch. This was my main duty as a "technician" -- to periodically verify that the machine was still calibrated properly.

That happens with my touch screen cell phone sometimes, really annoying but I can't imagine it on a ballot machine.

cool thx for calibrating the machines! Keep em honest.

wouldn't bad calibration be in the same place throughout the whole vote though? doesn't make sense to only have bad calibration on one part of the voting process.

    • When I vote, I'm going to make a video of myself doing it... If it flips the vote in front of me, I'll spread the video to every media outlet and website in existence. I wish more people did this. Oh, and I'm not sure if making a video is legal or allowed... and I don't care.

    • Actually i am amazed to hear there is no independent oversight on this. Whoever writes the software can use tiny tricks to get people to unwillingly cast their vote onto someone specific.

20 Amazing Facts About Voting In The United States
      http://www.guerrillafunk.com/thoughts/doc000023.html

      TOP 5

      1. 80% of all votes in America are counted by only two companies: Diebold and ES&S.

      2. There is no federal agency with regulatory authority or oversight of the US voting machine industry.

      3. The vice-president of Diebold and the president of ES&S are brothers.

      4. The chairman and CEO of Diebold is a major Bush campaign organizer and donor who wrote in 2003 that he was "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year."

      5. 35% of ES&S is owned by Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, who became Senator based on votes counted by ES&S machines.

“It’s enough that people know there has been a vote. Those who vote decide of nothing. Those who count the votes, decides of everything” - Joseph Stalin

and since Acorn actually were the ones raising the red flag about the registration regularities, wtf is your point?
and no, daboz is not a rightwing nutjob. that's unfair.

ACORN fraud is from people hired to get unregistered voters registered... making up names as they were paid per new registration.. these invalid registrations were culled by ACORN. and even if they were not.. the would not have made a vote..as they were not connected to a real person.. Having a vote change to the republican candidate is not even close by comparison.. since you are apparently in favor of more of the same? what would you care about fair elections

    • The scary thing is that one on was able to CORRECT the votes.

It seems like they all just shrugged their shoulders and went back to playing Solitaire on their laptops and handing out "I Voted!" stickers to people as they left the building.

So.....yeah. Looks like they have programmed the machines to steal another election and even when we catch them red-handed absolutely nothing happens.

      (sigh)

      Fuck. Here we go again....

I'm bringing my camcorder into the voting booth with me and filming my vote. So that after McCain "wins" by the customary 51/49 percent they usually rig the elections at I can show reporters how my vote was switched too.

How come no one every fixes these problems BEFORE Nov?

    • no great surprise here, the only way the republicans can win it now is to disenfranchise americans and steal there votes.
We are looking more like Zimbabwe every day.
If the republican party do not want the american people to have a vote then they should declare a state of emergency and impose marshal law, and ban democracy!!!!
Faking votes or switching peoples votes is criminal. Why can't we have paper ballots like almost every other country on earth?
Answer: Because it very hard to steal an election based on paper ballots.

    • i'm surprised it so blatantly changed the vote in front of the voter's eyes. you would at least think if it was rigged it would only make an internal switch of the vote and not a visible external. maybe the gop's diebold technicians aren't as crafty as they thought..
