Tainted feed kills 1,500 Chinese dogs bred for fur

BEIJING – Some 1,500 dogs bred for their raccoon-like fur have died after eating feed tainted with the same chemical that contaminated dairy products and sickened tens of thousands of babies nationwide, a veterinarian said Monday.

The raccoon dogs — a breed native to east Asia whose fur is used to make trim on coats and other clothing — were fed a product that contained the chemical melamine and developed kidney stones, said Zhang Wenkui, a veterinary professor at Shenyang Agriculture University. All of the dogs died on farms in just one village.

Zhang determined that the animals died of kidney failure after performing a necropsy — an animal autopsy — on about a dozen dogs. He declined to say when the deaths occurred but a report Monday in the Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper said they had occurred over the past two months.

"First, we found melamine in the dogs' feed, and second, I found that 25 percent of the stones in the dogs' kidneys were made up of melamine," Zhang told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Even Current.com is showing Google fur ads right now.

(As I write this, in the right sidebar of this page on current.com are ads for Possum Fur Throws.)

Ergo, Current.com is also in the fur advertising business.

Btw: "Gee, but the ads are automated" is not an excuse. Being automated has never been a defensible explanation for morally offensive behavior.

Current.com, please ask Google to stop serving fur ads on your site.

(Based on experience, it will be difficult, if not impossible for them to acheive this for you.)

    • OMG. Insomnia. Japanese slaughtering whales in our southern waters and Chinese killing everything. I would like to hope that everything that goes around, comes around.

    • now imagine if aliens came to this planet and had human farms, to make human jackets, i bet then we'd stop massacring other species.

such little cute eyed babies, grown for their fur, so some yuppie coke whore or rap video drone model can have a furry coat, despicable and immoral humans we are.

the Chinese are awful with human and animal rights.

    • i can't help but bring attention to the double standard we hold in the US regarding the treatment of animals. whether you wear them or consume them, people that support the animal industry are responsible immense suffering and death on a holocaustic scale for mere personal pleasure.

unless you're vegan, you're no different from these people. the only difference is cultural standards regarding the specific species of the animals in question. the chinese are simply less arbitrary in their preference.

i was exaggerating but i became a lot weaker and i was just plain unhealthy when i tried it

      my point is
most diets don't work for everybody
and to make me feel bad because your diet doesn't work for me is really mean

you may have been experiencing withdrawal symptoms. meat contains opioid substances that are physically addictive. you may also have been detoxing. trying quitting a diet of cake of cookies and you're likely to feel like shit also. our bodies grow accustomed to toxins and it takes time for them to adjust to healthy eating habits.

protein deficiency is something that really only occurs in the third world. if you're eating enough calories and a reasonably diverse diet (you know, grains, fruit, vegetables, etc) chances are you're getting plenty of protein. most people consume far too much protein, particularly animal protein, which can have adverse health consequences.

    • even as a republican I find it totally disgusting that anyone wears the fur of an animal. I told mt mother in law and sister in law 20 plus years ago they were not allowed to wear fur coats into my home and if I caught them with a fur coat in my home i would take it out to the burning barrel and dispose of it. I have never had to do it because they knew i was serious. My mother in law has since changed her mind and no longer wears fur. I wish I could say the same for my snooty bitch sister in law.

    • Beware of so called "fake fur".
Many times that fake fur you may be wearing is actually animal fur labeled as fake, so as not to alarm people.

I'd pay way more to own one then I ever would to wear one.

    • Its dangerous to buy any fur products these days. There are no regulation in this industry. Your fur trimmed coat could be from a cat or dog...

    • Thats so sad! The poor animals!
If people are going to kill them for fur, they should at least do it humanely- so the animals dont suffer kidney failure!
Or here's a solution: Stop killing animals for fur!

      Libero,
You point out something extremely interesting. I would have expected those companies to use synthetics. Are they using this dog fur because it's cheaper? I find it hard to believe that it would be, but I can't think of another reason for those companies to use actual dog fur.

    • I bet they could sell them as pets and actually turn a profit. Still not a great thing, but not as bad as killing them. They're actually kinda cool looking.

      I agree with Krush,
there is no point in breeding animals for fur anymore. Synthetics are just as good. Sometimes they can be more insulating than real fur, depending on the material.

Fur shouldn't still be seem as a sign of wealth. It's a sign of backwardness.
