Thousands of followers of anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr took to the streets on Saturday in a demonstration against a pact that would allow U.S. forces to stay in Iraq for three more years.

Marchers waved Iraqi flags and chanted “Yes, yes Iraq! No, no to the occupation!”

A white-turbaned cleric read out what he described as a letter from Sadr calling on parliament to vote down the pact.

“I reject and condemn the continuation of the presence of the occupation force, and its bases on our beloved land,” the letter said, calling the pact “shameful for Iraq.”

    • Let the people rule their country. We've crumbled the dictatorship, let the iraqi people take their country and stop treating them like lesser-humans.

      This is ridiculous.

    • While I support the withdrawal of American Troops, this is never going to happen on December. Maybe next one would be reasonable.

    • We are never leaving. You can expect troop levels in Iraq to be something on the order of what we have South Korea for the next 50 years. This was never about liberating a country for a dictator this was always about our wanting and needing to have strong military pressence in the Middle East.

What if an army of Chinese would come and 'help you' in America while making deals over your natural resources with the Russians? Would you protest, or not?

You are as short sighted as you can get.

    • They keep saying a cut and run would make it look like we were unsuccessful. I don't really understand what would make us successful. We have established a democracy for them and showed them how to protect it.
      That's good enough for me.

    • Please, vote this story up. The preceived success of the "surge" is in large part due to the "cease-fire" of the Mahdi army and the fact that the country has been "cleansed" ethically. The "success of the surge" is a cornerstone of McCain's campaign. Exposed it for the farce it really is. We are on the homestretch.

yes, democracy has to be bred inside a country. You can't go invade a country, remove it's dictator, and magically say "you're a democracy now" and expect things to go well. Here's how i see it going. Once we leave, no matter when we leave, whoever has the most sway with the U.S. trained army is going to become the new dictator. Hell, at least when Saddam was dictator he kept everyone else scared of him so that people didn't have to be afraid of anyone wearing an oddly large jacket or every odd looking briefcase on the side of the road. I don't care what McBush says we've fucked their country up royally.

    • Would we want half a million of some other county's troops in here "helping" us during our crisis? Um, no. The citizens and military in Iraq are not stupid or inferior to us and are very capable of making their own decisions. They don't need to be babysat by the not-so-big, not-so-bad United States.
