Woman quits job at call center over anti-Obama script

Chaylee Cole, a student at Fairmont State University, lost her part-time job in Weston last Friday after refusing to make telephone calls attacking Barack Obama.

McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee were paying for the calls, according to a "work paper" handed to Cole and her co-workers at the Weston offices of 1.2.1 Direct Response, a company based in Philadelphia.

"I was working at the call center," Cole said. "We got a campaign ad talking about how Obama had been part of terrorist attacks on the Capitol, the Pentagon and a judge's home and had ties with Bill Ayers.

"Last Thursday, I told them I did not want to read it," Cole said. "They said, 'Either you read it or you go home.'

"I told them I wasn't going to read it. They made me go home without pay for the rest of the day."

The "work paper" told callers to say:

"Hello, I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers [airs], whose organization bombed the US Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans.

"And Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington. Barack Obama and his Democrat allies lack the judgment to lead our country.

"This call was paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee."

Cole said, "We were just supposed to read that message and hang up. One of my other issues working there was that someone told me it didn't matter who picked up the phone, whether it was a 5-year-old or a 95-year-old. We should read the message."

Cole, who started working at the center a few months earlier, returned to work on Friday.

"I talked to one of our 'coaches,' which is what our supervisors were called. I said I was unhappy with the situation and I quit," she said Tuesday.

Asked about the claims about Ayers and the "extreme leftist agenda," no one from the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C., returned telephone calls on Tuesday. Neither did Gail Gitcho, regional spokeswoman for the McCain-Palin campaign, based in Alexandria, Va.

Russell Andrews, a spokesman for 1.2.1 Direct Response, did not return several telephone calls made to his Philadelphia office on Tuesday.

1.2.1 Direct Response helps private companies and other organizations with fundraising, media coverage, advertising, marketing and publicity, according to its Web site.

That Web site reports that the company employs more than 550 people to make telephone calls, including 220 in Weston, 210 in Parkersburg, 170 in Media, Pa., and 150 in Philadelphia.

The McCain-Palin campaign has repeatedly tried to tie Ayers, now a professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago, to Obama. When Ayers was associated with Weather Underground, Obama was 8 years old.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton released a statement about Obama and Ayers reported by The Washington Post on Feb. 19.

"Sen. Obama strongly condemns the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence. But he was an 8-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost 40 years ago is ridiculous," Burton said.

Numerous other publications - including The New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times, The New Yorker and Time magazine - have also noted that Obama and Ayers never had a close relationship.

    • Sure you can call Obama a socialist.

But all in all it is better to re-invest in the American people than give the rich more money to squirrel away at Banc Suisse or off in the Caymans where it sits and does nothing while these corporate giants outsource jobs overseas and ask for golden parachutes in the process!

Conservatism practices Social Darwinism, that is easier explained as Ebenezer Scrooge Economics...HELP THE POOR?...Are there NOT enough prisons?...are there NOT enough workhouses? Far be it for YOU to have a reason to PICK MY POCKET every 25TH OF DECEMBER! BE GONE!

THAT is the WAY the rich are...and John McCain knows he is protecting a minority that has MORE wealth than they would SPEND in a MILLION LIFE TIMES...BUT WOULD RATHER TAX THE POOR THAT HAVE NOTHING!

And THAT is HOW we came to where we are right now!

By the way Wisecracker, I hope Santa leaves you a lump of high sulfur coal in you stocking this year so you can suffer the effects of back lung and mesothelioma like my Dad and Uncle did before they died!

If they are going to die then do it quick and decrease the surplus population...are we to go back to Dickens time again?

Give me a fricking break Wisecrack. You are so full of crap! The rich have so many loopholes they can use to avoid paying taxes, and so do business owners. I know several people making over 250k a year and not one of them is complaining about a tax increase. Heck, I wish I was getting taxed for making well over than the majority of people. I intend to. I can't if I'm being strangled in the economic situation. Great of examples of prosperity can be measured by the last two candidacies.
The idea that only a few select people should be allowed to make millions upon millions while the rest of us catch their crumbs is anti-the american dream. People die trying to come here so that they have a piece of that dream and right now, its divided between the have and have nots.
I'm not saying anyone should be happy about their taxes going up, but I can't feel sorry for the fact that it means you'll have cut your vacation in Maui a couple days short. I doubt you make over 250 so just like Joe the Plumber, you will be benefiting under Obama despite your disbelief. I'm sorry, but you're the delusional one here and anyone whose down for the status quo of the way things are and have been going really should have their head examined.

Why should anyone have to pay more taxes? Because they make more!

    • If what she is saying is true, that is very, very sad. There is no honor in spreading misinformation - blatant lies - that are completely illogical (weren't terrorists from the middle east supposed to be responsible for all those attacks? Are all Americans supposed to forget that now?)

But... to reiterate... how do we know for sure this is 100% true?

(I'm not accusing, I'm asking - for all you trigger happy arguers)

    • I'm glad she did what was right, hopefully it will inspire her co-workers to quit also.

How could you even live with making calls like that?
      Maybe they hire McCain supporters?

    • Step 1. Lie
      Step 2. Vomit
      Step 3. Repeat Step 1 and 2

All they do is lie and vomit the same crap over and over again. It works the same way as commercials. When you see it repeated long enough, you will get that urge to believe them and buy their products, or in this situation, lies.

    • OMG, people actually hear those bold face lies.
Thank god, I live in a strong democratic state. But other people who hear this Bullsh*t, I think you should sue especially since they said if a kid answers the phone, it's ok say that sh*t. I mean aren't Republicans about family values. Some of them are afraid their children have to see homosexual people living their own lives but they would let their own candidate use this tactic.

    • Made of glass, Teflon, or anything slippery is better than McBU$H and his fly paper. Like BU$H, you WILL get STUCK on it with NO way out!

I think it really has to do with the fact that our economy is in the tank, and we are in debt up to our noses because of eight years of wading through a cesspool of lies and assorted crap like that and all for nothing.

Just let it go Dino. Its not worth fighting over in the long run. Jammer if you like somebody telling you fabrications every day of your life then thats your gig. Some of us would rather hear the truth for a change.

But if you want to continue to believe in ideas such as Moslems will be hitting our shores tomorrow morning wearing suicide bombs and praying to Mecca...That Iran is just waiting for a chance to hit us with a nuclear bomb...that this bailout is NOT George BU$H and Co. looting the treasury...that the moon is indeed made of green cheese...and that Sarah Palin would make a GOOD VP...then as I said that is YOUR choice!

For one thing I don't group people together and blame them.

I'm not a democrat or, for that matter, a republican.

It's a ridiculous effort to point fingers at an entire group as you continue, as a group, to be just as bad.

Let's not play angels and devils...because in the political realm everyone is a devil...there is no lesser evil.

dude, I am or should I say was a republican, and believe me when I say WE DID IT!

Republicans controlled the Congress from 1996 until 2006 and the White House from 2001 until 2008. It was OUR policies that did this and we need to take responsibility for it!

I am now a Libertarian, Neo-populist, but NOT Republican.

If you are going on EVIL then may I suggest a vote for Cthulu? Go for the GREATER EVIL if that is the case!

true, as I said, dont waste your time. Jammer has made a decision and wants to stick to it. Let us not be like neocons here and try to force the issue.

By the way, I am registered as an Independent! I make my decisions based on actions, and in my opinion GOP actions have been bad for over a decade.

    • Wasn't John saying that he can "reach across the aisle" and bringing both parties together?

Now John is warning people that:

      a) entire states of this country are deeply anti-American

      b) The Democrats cannot be worked with on any issue and should be feared as terrorists!

My goodness John....how much of your soul are you willing to sell in order to win?

Are you going to have anything left?

    • Does this surprise anyone? It is the same as 2000, and 2004. Push Polling, smear campaigns, and election rigging are specialties of the GOP.

This company is the same as Advantage Consultants who hire BLOG Warriors to raise McCaines Mutiny anywhere they can as they get paid to fight Liberals and Democrats.

The economy is tanking? And ALL they can worry about is this crap?

    • Congratulations Republicans. Joseph Goebbels, propaganda minister, would be so proud of you. Quote -

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." — Joseph Goebbels Propaganda Minister 3rd Reich
