Apple donates $100,000 to fight Proposition 8

Apple Inc. is donating $100,000 to fight Proposition 8, which aims to end same-sex marriage in California by amending the constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

"Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees' same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person's fundamental rights -- including the right to marry -- should not be affected by their sexual orientation," the company said in a statement posted on its Web site Friday.

Apple joins Google, which came out publicly against Prop. 8 last month. Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page reportedly have donated a combined $140,000 to fight the measure.

In revealing its support, Google officials voiced similar points, saying the company sees the issue as one of equality and is opposed to the elimination of fundamental rights.

"While we respect the strongly held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 -- we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love," Brin said.

It is not common practice for either company to take a stand on political measures. It remains to be seen what effect the move might have on Proposition 8 supporters, who might avoid doing business with companies that oppose the measure.

    • This is great, but when are we going to list the names of every other company and individual that has donated to fight Prop 8?

Is there going to be a press release for everyone who actually votes - because that is all that really matters.

This is not news. This is marketing

    • I don't understand why straight people have such a problem with gay marriage. I don't understand why people get so upset over a word (marriage). It is a religious matter if we want to get married in a church but if we have a civil ceremony, keep religion out of it. I get very upset by the holier than thou bunch of people. Why do these people make such a big fuss over same sex marriage when 75% of married people have said they stepped out on their partners' at one time or another. "Marriage" is just a word. Get over it people.

    • Same sex couples fine, as long as they aren't both men then they should get benefits. But marriage, what is often called "a piece of paper" should not be between two men. I mean the legal marriage. I think a secondary marriage, another "piece of paper" that protects couples who are men but does not support obvious medical needs that a woman has is in order. Hope I said that right and not offended anyone. Because is would get even more complicated if there were two women who both wanted to have kids. Maybe there is more information needed about ways around all this and not amendments made to marriage so that it fits everyone's lifestyle.

You can't pick and choose. Civil liberties across the board for everyone. No one has the right to tell anyone what they can and can't do on moral issues and judgments.

    • Whilst generally a fan of the Apple computer for it's technologies, I didn't expect to be a supporter with regards to humanitarian issues.

With this latest donation, I have a renewed respect for those at Cupertino. Well done.

"You got my corporation in your politics!"

I'm pretty sure that's how it happened with republicans and corporations.

    • What is APPLE doing about the toxic pollution and e-waste their products cause? How much are they investing into that? Personally I wish corporations would stay out of politics, but of course that's all about profits too.

    • I was not alive during desegregation, but looking back in history, it seems ridiculous that people would be openly against civil rights. We are living through a modern day civil rights battle. It also seems ridiculous that people are against rights for homosexuals.

Once again, the civil rights will prevail, and the Conservatives will be forced to accept it. Their archaic way of life is such an impediment to progress.

    • yes if you cannot agree on the basic fundamental rights of a Man and a Woman being married legally to produce children to further the Human species..throw some money at the Moral issues and the problem will get resolved.
Not everything is resolved by money though..?

    • Jenkins, thanks, I am glad my post made you smile. I should add that I have already contributed twice at the www.eqca.org website; therefore, I am not urging anyone to do something that I have not already done myself. I believe that it is important, as the aphorism goes, to "Put your money where your mouth is."

    • I totally agree with the comments here praising Apple computers for joining Google in choosing the right side in this battle. Bravo for Apple! If you want to join them in contributing to defeat this hateful proposition, you can do just that by going to Equality California's website at www.eqca.org and making a donation. Also, be sure to go out on election day if you live in California and vote against Proposition 8 and encourage everyone you know to do the same.

"If gays had it their way mankind wouldn't exist!" That is completely ludicrous and homophobic. Seriously.

"We are here on this Earth as man and woman to reproduce mankind!" Earth is plenty populated, and is, in my opinion: overpopulated.

Agreeing with Tiffany... Are you dumb enough to think that if one person is gay we all have to be?

That's where the word choice comes in, I have the choice, they have the choice, you have a choice. The caveat is you have to respect other people's choices... ESPECIALLY when they choose something different from you.

"If gays had it their way mankind wouldn't exist!"

What did you mean by that? You into the opposite sex, good for you, you think the singular purpose of our gendered species is procreation, you get right on that then, or would you rather complain when people don't adhere to your beliefs?

I for one am straight, but funnily enough the most open, understanding people I've met are gay... so I think while we're busy making babies they can whack us upside the heads when we say something stupid like, "You can be gay all you want but it shouldn't be in our constitution and it won't be!".

The_Natural said "So you respect people when they choose to take innocent lives? When someone chooses to give crack to a child? When someone chooses to rape someone? I could go on and on and on"

What does any of that have to do with being GAY or thier rights to marriage?

Maybe if your christian that means you hate jews, buddhists, muslims, because yours is the only way!!!

    • The thing is, if these companies say they disapprove Prop 8 and support equal rights for all, then what does that say about the companies that support Prop 8? They're pretty much putting a lot of pressure on other companies to support this lest they be regarded as supporting inequality.

    • Love or hate the issue at hand, the key words are fundamental equality for all people. We should stand and fight for it, as this is what makes this country great. Apple and Google know this.

    • Step back from the issue for a bit and think about this; why does gaining influence in the political arena, or affecting govt. level policy, require egregious sums of money being peddled to our politicians as bribery? Why should it require any money at all in a truly democratic society? Shouldn't it require only citizenship and an opinion?

Truth: Democracy in this country is a buzzword used only to perpetuate complacency and obedience, it has nothing to do with reality. The system of govt. we live under is an oligarchic empire with a very subservient republic.

This is our glaring example. Thank you Apple.

Because people sit at home on their TV's or Computers -- rather in the 3rd space that is little or non-existant any longer

I guess the internet is a little like the 3rd space but its more of a 4th space - Since not everyone can be in the 4th space

    • Many may be against Prop. 8 because of the words "constitutional amendment"

I know some people who are against gay marriage but do not feel the need for a constitutional amendment, hence their vote against Prop. 8.
