College Republicans quickly distance from hoax attack

"When Ms. Todd initially contacted us claiming to have been attacked, our first reaction was obviously to be concerned for her safety," said College Republicans communications director Ashley Barbera. "We are as upset as anyone to learn of her deceit. Ashley must take full responsibility for her actions."
On Thursday, the conservative website Hot Air described discussions with both Charlie Smith and Ethan Eilon, the National Chair and Executive Director of the group, in which both attested to the validity of the widely distributed photo of an injured Todd, and affirmed that the image came from her.
Eilon had also told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Thursday that Todd "was one of our better recruiters this year."
Of course, there was no way for the College Republicans to know that the photo -- which was of Todd and apparently did come from her -- was at root a fraud. But the organization's quick distancing suggests they are eager to put their association with Todd quickly behind them.

Ms Todd's actions are reminiscent of the Carol Stuart murder in Boston (19 years ago to the day) and Susan Smith's crime in South Carolina (14 years ago yesterday) in that these crimes were reported to have been committed by black men. If McCain's opponent were a white individual, would Ms Todd have gone to such lengths with her elaborate but rapidly unraveling hoax? Would her story have even hit the national media if the "attacker" had been a white male? Maybe but probably not as it's not as compelling as perpetuating the stereotype of the "savage" black man waiting to prey on white women. I think her actions, besides pointing out how deeply disturbed she is, also speak to her own racism. Her actions could have brought incredible harm to countless black men.

Where are all of the Obama haters who claim to be unbaist ? I would like to hear from some of the people who are disappointed that the story is not true.
What part did Ayers and Wright play in this ?
A lot of people really think this way. If that were not the case, she would have never tried it, and the McCain camp would have never anxiously awaited the newsroom for the comments from Pittsburg police.
This reminds me of the woman that killed her four little children in North Carolina years ago, and then blamed the murders on a Black man. She was not prosecuted. She was declared legally insane. Watch and see if the same thing does not happen here.
I did not feel sorry for her, and I surely do not feel sorry for this deviant bigot. She committed and age old crime against Black men. Thousands of Black men have been murdered and hung behind these accusations for hundreds of years. Prosecute this heifer, just like you would if she were a crack dealer. Her crime is far worse.Does anybody know the story of Emmitt Till ?
He was a young Black boy from Chicago who was sent down south by his mother to meet his cousins for the first, in Mississippi, in the 50 s. He was accused of whistling at a White woman, and taken to jail for it. The White southerners were not satified with this, and broke him out of jail. They tied him to the black of a car, and drug him for so long that, his torso was torn from his limbs. His body could not be recognized from the beating and dragging that he went through. The White woman later admitted that she had lied, saying that her husband had made her tell the story to the police. No one was ever prosecuted. The story of Emmit Till is a legend because it symbolizes an issue that Black men have suffered from since they were brought here in chains from the Mother continent.
I do not feel sorry for this lady at all.

Apparently there is a history of deceitful behavior on Ms Todd's part.
"...In March, Ms. Todd was asked to leave a grass-roots group of Ron Paul supporters in Brazos County, Texas, group leader Dustan Costine said. He said Ms. Todd posed as a supporter of former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and called the local Republican committee seeking information about its campaign strategies.
"She would call the opposing campaign and pretend she was on their campaign to get information," Mr. Costine said last night. "We had to remove her because of the tactics she displayed. After that we had nothing to do with her."
About a month earlier, he said, Ms. Todd sent an e-mail to the Ron Paul group saying her tires were slashed and that campaign paraphernalia had been stolen from her car because she supported Mr. Paul.
"She's the type of person who wants to be recognized," Mr. Costine said."
When I saw her picture yesterday there was something about her "injuries" that didn't ring true. Besides the obvious with the backwards "B", her black eye looked more like smudged mascara, the "racoon eye" look (that I've sported when I've fallen asleep without removing make-up) that a medical team certainly would have discovered if she had sought medical attention.
http://www.spectator.org/blog/2008/10/25/behind-the-ashley-todd-hoax
"...After admitting that the reported attack was a hoax, but before being taken into police custody, Todd told a friend in Pittsburgh that she didn't think it was "such a big deal," said the source, who found that remark "incredible."
She's parlayed her 15 minutes of fame into infamy.

I wonder what Ashley thought to gain by doing this; had the hoax gone undetected? I suspect it was an act she'd hoped would garnish Republican support. If so, that was an adolescent conclusion. Even if true, the incident wouldn't have changed anyone's mind. The perpetrator would have had to been a nut case; and both parties have those. I see things a little differently.
The US is unique among the nations of the world. Somehow we've always managed to strike a balance that keeps us in business. I'm 60. I remember my Grandmother saying, "When the Democrats are in office they sink our ships, shoot down our planes, but the economy gets straightened out. When the Republicans are in office we go to war maintaining our dominate world position, but spend ourselves out & mainly just take care of big business."
My Grandmother was born in 1909. Seems to me like we're continuing to do the same thing.
To the Democrats and liberals among us, I point out that this world is not as we would have it. Tending our own knitting we can do. But it's better to stay involved and not expect rational behavior from irrational people. If we don't pay attention to all the rest of the folks in the world then one rises up and bites us in the butt. In all the years of our existence, the world has never run out of people like this.
To the Republicans and hawks I say we can't make the world over in our image. Our role is to present a good example and guide when we're able. VietNam, Afgan & Iraq have illustrated that strong arm tactics don't always work; and that's not our job anyway. I'll also say that while big business is essential to our nation, it can't be at the expense of the people that do the work.
In American politics we mainly line up on two sides, each party reflecting a different view on what's important. But when the president takes office, his oath isn't to the party and he can't act as if it was. The Democrats will probably win this election; but it's Mr. Obama we're electing.
Mr. Clinton brought us back from a serious deficit, but only fired off a couple of missles at Osama to let him know we weren't happy. 9-11 was the result of that. Mr. Bush retaliated in Afgan and then carried it even further with Iraq, both with mixed results. Some good has been done, but neither country is stable and our troops aren't going to make it so. But we've sure spent ourselves back in the hole again. Our last two "at bats" are little different from what we've always had. "We need Change" has been the rallying cry of every political campaign in our history.
I keep hoping for a president that's gifted in BOTH domestic AND international relations. It would be nice to have a balance for once. Maybe Obama? Leave us hope.

The college republicans have long flown under the radar and have been guilty many times of committing hoaxes and voter fraud. There needs to be greater scrutiny on the organization as a whole as it has been proven time and again to be unable to manage itself with professionalism and honesty.
If that requires opening up the college Dem's to more scrutiny as well, i don't think they would have a problem with that.

If you check Michelle Malkin's Hot Air blog website for the original story, you'll find all types of comments to try and defend her and demonize the Democratic party and Obama for this story. When a few members pointed out the story as later to be a hoax, none of them admitted they were wrong and we're snippy towards those who ended up calling the bluff.
When you're eating crow, the beak is always the hardest part to swallow.
I don't think this will damage the Republican party much. They've already thrown her to the wolves to save face, and their base has been locked in regardless of what happens to a few supporters. The real question is how many people will become fodder for collateral damage before people realize the conservatives don't really give a damn about them. They'd lock the whole lot of them in jail if it would win the election for them...

What about the actions of the media and the campaign jumping on this sketchy story without even checking it out first? Seems to me that they ALL share in the responsibility for this lie becoming a public truism for some.
