Heroic dog saves kittens in house fire

A little dog named Leo has been proclaimed a hero after risking his own life to protect four kittens in a Melbourne house fire overnight.

The plucky pooch tested the courage and skills of firefighters as they were forced to dodge fallen power lines to reach him and his young feline companions at the burning weatherboard home in Pilgrim Street, Seddon just before 9pm (AEDT).

Commander Ian Brown said family pet Leo, which remained in the house guarding the family's four-week-old kittens, owed his life to the firefighters.

"They got him out of the house and successfully resuscitated him," he said. "They are just there spending some time now with Leo before they go off duty."

Following a few tense minutes, the animals responded to oxygen and therapy, and were now fully revived.

Commander Brown said the family was relieved to be reunited with their family pets, including the mother of the kittens, which had initially been lost in the incident.

"Everyone's fine. . . we rescued anyone," Commander Brown said.

An 11-year-old girl suffered smoke inhalation as she made her escape, and was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital for observation.

She was at the home with her 37-year-old mother, a five-year-old sister and 18-year-old brother when the fire started in the front room.

However, Commander Brown said the lives of firefighters were put at further risk, with the family not having an evacuation plan or smoke alarms.

"A proper working smoke alarm and an evacuation plan equals a safer escape."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

how droll that the dog's name is leo.

by the way, pavlov was a sadistic dog abuser, so i'm not so sure he's smiling, and i'm not sure why he would be regardless. did someone ring a bell to spur leo to reflexively protect several kittens?

It's certainly understandable when signals get crossed over the internet. I tried to tip off the irony of my original statement with an emoticon. To be honest, I'm not even sure that I used the correct one. I don't really understand the difference between a :), a :D, a ;), etc...

Nonetheless, Pavlov was indeed a "sadistic dog abuser". I don't necessary disagree with anything you've posted in this thread. In fact, I think we tend to be in agreement with our posts. The irony I was intending to suggest in my original post was that Pavlov's rampant abuse of canines led to this particular heroic act. Irony, of course, being when the expressed meaning is the complete opposite of the literal meaning.

A literal translation of my original post would be "Pavlov would be disappointed to find out that such an act of humanity didn't have to be programmed as a 'conditional reflex' in canines."

I hope this clarifies any confusion.

Well, I have to thank you for 2 things then. One is the civility with which you handled this momentary confusion. Most people on the web would have teed off and attacked with the utmost hostility at the mere appearance of some disagreement. And the 2nd is the education you've provided me in the etiquette of emoticons, which certainly would not have occurred if not for your aforementioned approach. I'll definitely use the ' :| ' emoticon from now on in order to avoid further confusion. I find this to have been a worthwhile exchange. Good talk, numinant. Peace.
