Ted Stevens found guilty on corruption charges

Image
Scott_Bromley
A jury has found U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska guilty on all seven counts of making false statements on Senate disclosure forms. Stevens, 84, is the longest-serving Republican senator in history. He requested a speedy trial in hopes of clearing his name before Election Day. He is locked in a tight race with Democrat Mark Begich as he seeks to retain the Senate seat he has held since 1968

    • Sarah Palins mansion..
It appears the various contractors, who were building a local sports venue built it, she awarded the contract, and guess what, 80% of the contract companies contributed to her campaigns for Governer and VP. Also many have been given lucrative deals since, even there wives were given appointments..
      See this on current.com
I can't post a link, but it is called 'Did sports complex contractors build palins house for free.

So I guess she won't be worried about negative equity and falling house prices then?

    • I predict that Stevens will not serve 1 second of jail time. He'll find a way to avoid the big house, the rich and connected always do.

    • It's morning in America! The conviction of Stevens is a symbol of the decrepitude of the Republican party. The Republican party is and has been a corrupt cancer in the heart of America. With Obama's help we will cut that cancer out.

    • If you're going to put a college student in prison for 10 years for smoking a joint, you'd better put this sorry old man in prison for abusing his powers as a trusted civil servant.

if he's guilty he can appeal, if he's found guilty again he should go to prison. that's the end of the story.

    • One down, the whole executive branch to go !

First they stole 2 elections… the first by perverting the supreme court…nothing happened…Then 9-11 & a war based on a 1000 lies & the treacherous hoisting of a CIA agent… nothing happened… they proceeded to shred the constitution, kidnapped imprisoned & tortured the world over, spied on us & fired the best US attorneys… nothing… conducted a thinly veiled ethic cleansing during Katrina…nada…now they are taking us to the cleaners…

Is there a limit to the damage this executive branch can inflict to the USA ?

      It seems not !

    • This is a good start for the lying, cheating, stealing, scheming, scumbag, fuck-face republicans that have spent the last 7 years converting public funds into private accounts & the last year transferring private debt to the public sector. I hope you rot in your cell for as long as you've been fucking taxpayers & voters over after being entrusted with powers that another pathetic politician just couldn't keep from abusing.

I'm may going out on a limb here, but I think you're just one of many despicable republicans going down next week-& then going away. Also, you may want to think about suspending your campaign & start packing, because I hear where you’re going there’s always a lot of packing going on where you meet new & interesting people-except those won’t be payoffs you’ll be on the receiving end of-ha, ha.

    • He'll do no real jail time. It's so typical that some politicians push for a correctional system when they don't even believe in it.

Would you prefer that illustration in charcoal, watercolor or senate?

e.g. "A nation of Laws, indivisible, governed - for the felons by the felons, from this day forward.."

But if you are a voter, and a felon?

That's COMPLETELY different. Felons may rule but never vote!

If you recall John Cleese covering one eye so he only saw one person instead of two? This is Monty Python turf.

All I can say is that it must be so frustrating not to be able to vote for yourself because you are a felon. These people confuse me. I am gonna go draw a picture of a kitten now....

    • Convicted felons cannot vote and people with wrong addresses can't vote but THIS convicted felon can serve on the senate?

"Despite being a convicted felon, he is not required to drop out of the race or resign from the Senate. If he wins re-election, he can continue to hold his seat because there is no rule barring felons from serving in Congress."

I hope he gets a sentence like any other citizen would. No special treatment for government crooks no matter what party they are affiliated with.

      Bipartisan justice should prevail.

    • Finally the old fart has his day in court and it didn't turn out too well. I wonder if he'll get a new deck in his prison cell with a new barbeque. And every time he goes out for his hour in the recreation area, he comes back and finds something new in his cell.

    • Sure let's focus on a senator that got his pocket stuffed a little, while Bush, Cheney and Pelosi plot our demise in Iraq, Syria and Iran.
I guess the people are happy just picking off the little guys, takes away from what Americans should be doing..

      Be patient right now.
Impeaching Bush makes Cheney in charge of your days and your nights.
Challenging signing statements makes the legality of signing statements heard by a conservative court, like elections in 2000.

    • And investigate how VECO corp may have padded the McCain/Palin ticket, then investigate how Palin and her claim to be a maverick standing up against those "Good ol' oil boys" really benefitted her election and popularity. Did VECO pay into the $1500 per person royalties that Alaskans get for federal land-use?

It’s a bad year for “fiscally” responsible Republican politicians from Alaska! Better yet it’s a bad year for Republican’s in general!

    • I reckon it is no longer going to be a 'tight race' between him and the democrat. However, I would have assumed the prosecution would have wanted a speedy trial to ensure a verdict before he passed.

    • Finally, I just wonder if they are going to do the right thing and send him to jail. I now if I stole hundreds of thousands of dollars I would be in federal prison.

    • Uncle Ted's off to jail!

      SaraCuda is next!

Explains why the Daily News endorsed Obama-Biden. The great folks in Alaska wanted her back home in time for her trial date.

    • response to #2 wouldn't that go against Palin's extensive leadership experience as a Govenor vs this new senate seat, you know the Obama as a Senator is not running anything.

    • Prediction from Calif_Native:
      1) Convicted Senator Ted Stevens will win re-election (yes some folks are more interested in the pork he provides than common sense).

      2) The Senate will expell him as soon as he takes his seat.

      3) Gov. Palin will appoint herself to serve the remainder of Stevens' (full) term.

This chess move will put her in the middle of the Washington scene where she can direct the Republican Party and plan her Presidential bid in 2012.

    • Good. If he is guilty of something then send him away.
Now how about William Jefferson, when is he going to trial. Perhaps Charlie Rangel for tax evasion, how about that one. Hell, I would be happy if Sandy Berger satisfied the conditions of his probation for putting classified document in his underwear.
How come the Democrat rats never seem to go to trail much less jail. Members of the most dishonest, lying political party run free while members of the other party get found guilty of marginally criminal offenses. Democrat crooks, now THERE is a real redundancy. With this current crop of morons running the House and Senate, no wonder their approval ratings are at an all time low.
Dems should clean up thier own house before they pick on anothers.

No way ever(!) are Democrats more corrupt than Republicans. And in the wake of the recent Wall Street crisis, your argument is completely moot. Clearly, it was the greed of rich, selfish Republicans that have cost millions of cititzens their chance at the American Dream.

I love how Paratus takes the occasion of a long time REPUBLICAN senator being convicted on seven counts to rant about the corruption of the Democratic party. Hilarious. Stevens is a typical Republican crook...no matter how some people will try to spin it.

"Members of the most dishonest, lying political party run free while members of the other party get found guilty of marginally criminal offenses."

I'm not sure which part of "seven counts of making false statements on Senate disclosure forms" is marginal, Paratus. Ted Stevens is looking at going to jail for a felony and corruption at the Federal level. Pretty damn serious if you ask me... wouldn't you say?

Also, could you follow up your comment "most dishonest, lying political party" with some facts? This thread is about a convicted Senator who happens to be a republican. This conversation is based on fact. You should back yours up before starting another, or for that matter, wasting our time.

    • So I've heard rumors (paranoia?) that Sarah Palin, if she and McCain don't win the White House, is planning to nominate herself to Stevens' Senate seat if he is sent packing to jail. Yowsers.

      I believe it.

This attempt for the White House looks like a bust... I can see her taking a page outta the Hillary Clinton playbook ala Senator and resurfacing for the Presidency in a few years. Why not, she’s ridden Hillary’s coattails this far!

Sounds like something she would try. But if I'm not mistaken, Stevens is running in this election. I'm thinking being found guilty on seven counts of corruption might hurt his chances of re-election.

      Go Mark Begich.

      LarzNero,

Thanks for pointing out the laughing security guard in this pic!!!! I keep laughing to myself about all the different scenarios that could be going on in his head.

“Another one bites the dust. Ha ha ha ha! Whooo!”

“I’m so glad they wrapped this up in time for my lunch break!”

“Now that this old fool is outta the way I can FINALLY go out with that hottie on his arm. Got myself a date, Friday night at 8, and it will be so great!”

      LOL

A "rat' is a "rat" and a crook is a crook. It matters not what their political affiliation is. These people are not above the law and they need to be held accountable for their crimes and punished accordingly.
