Dole's 30-second ad, which is running on television in North Carolina but has not (understandably) been promoted by the GOP, uses a September fundraiser co-hosted by 40 people, including a representative of the Godless America PAC, to falsely accuse Democrat Kay Hagan of being an atheist herself.
The end of the ad features a picture of Hagan with a female voice yelling "there is no God!" -- the clear implication is that the voice is Hagan's. In fact, the Democratic candidate is a Sunday School teacher and an elder at her Presbyterian church.
The Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday morning that Hagan's campaign is seeking a "cease and desist" order against Dole's new attack.
"A leader of the Godless Americans PAC recently held a secret fundraiser in Kay Hagan's honor," the ad begins, showing some ominously blurred footage, ostensibly of the event in question. The ad then quotes the group's Ellen Johnson making atheist claims on two cable news shows. Summing up, the spot asks: "Godless Americans and Kay Hagan. She hid from cameras, took Godless money. What did Hagan promise in return?"
Two weeks ago, when the National Republican Senatorial Committee launched a similar attack, the Fayettville Observer described it as "the nastiest, most misleading, negative ad of the campaign..."

I do believe in god but also believe that what this ad is about is wrong understanding religion has no place in politics and hope the voters can see past the lies. Hopefully after this election both parties will see that the negative ads are not working. I believe that is why several republicans are making the switch over to Obama. Please everyone make your voices heard vote on Nov. 4 and write your government!

Word on the street is that Elizabeth Dole has been serving her own best interests instead of serving her constituency... the same thing she's doing by attempting to spread shamless lies about the character of her opponent...
It's amazing how low some people will stoop when losing a grip on their power and, obviously, their sanity...
The profuse corruption originating from that generation of political pundits is finally getting the exposure that it deserves in order to bring it to it's overdue end... we the people are tired of serving the best interests of those who embrace the selfish elitist principles of authoritative people like Elizabeth Dole...

LMAO These people are so backwoods! How can you have such a hysterical religious perspective and think that you are Any different from the fringe group of people who produce Islamic hate speech?
*The Bible is a nice story but I don't think things such as stoning your son to death for being willful has any place in modern, educated society other than Anthropological study.
I'm not saying don't believe in Jesus (which I don't) but really think under that logic - was he really the type of guy who hated everyone? - 3 years ago

Elizabeth The Unready [to Lose Gracefully] tackles the Important Issues!
Forget deficits, joblessness, market chaos, homeless people, the bankrupt and about to be bankrupt millions!
A state cast adrift in a sea of troubles seeks answers. So be smart. Just look away!
In earlier, and apparently precognitive days, the late Huey Long of Louisiana was said to have won at least one election by claiming his opponent was no less a source of vile wickedness than an UNREPENTANT THESPIAN!
The horrors! Such a description sounded pretty grim apparently and after thanking Huey for scaring them witless, once more voters shunned his condemned opponent to a remorseless life... on stage.
Full circle we come.
See you there The Specter slouching t'ward Charlotte, [then to Winston-Salem and Durham via I-85] steaming profusely with blasphemous and dishonorable intent!
Lo, it is my Godlessian Opponent!
Run! Hide! It is the End of Reality! Be VERY afraid!
Know ye, that only I can protect you!
Trust me....Liz.

If you think about their stance, for just a minute, you will realize the obvious - where in the hell do they think this is going after Nov. 4th? The mark of a responsible leader, is the wiggle-room left for those who did not support him or her, to suck it up and support, no matter what the outcome. These guys are so divisive and nasty, that if they do win, what "wiggle-room" are they providing for those of us who do not support them? They are so irresponsible that they would continue to divide and deride, despite the costs to the nation. They are showing themselves to be exactly what they are - opportunists with personal agendas, not leaders with a vision for us all.

One of Obama's first acts as President should be a nationwide ban on electronic voting machines.
Such technology as it is implemented now is an invitation to cheat. The flipped-vote margins don't have to be large, all that is required are fractions per county and the vote becomes meaningless. That the machine manufacturers support one party only?
Get rid of them. Go back to paper ballots.
As to all the other frauds - jail time. Big jail time.

Today I am proud to be a Democrat! Can you imagine the desperation of it all. Like McCain and all GOP Roveian strategies this election. They, who by the way were, before the grassroot phenomenon of Obama came along, always outspending the Dems. ALWAYS. For the record, Obama did not promise to use public funds!! He did, however, sign a piece of paper, as did McCain, that they would meet and discuss public financing. Hair splitting maybe, but not what is being said about him. He did not break his word.!!McCain likely assumed the GOP would have plenty of $$ for him, as by the way, last week, the GOP told JM they easily could give him $83million as needed. I'm not crying. The public donated $5-10-20 all over the place all this time and it is inspiring. Truly.

I understand this controversy is because the woman claims she is NOT an atheist and the ad itself was misleading...
But just for the record, there is nothing wrong with being a "godless" American. The implication that there is something wrong with being affiliated with Atheists is offensive itself and exactly the type of thing I try to fight against.
Atheism does not equal badness, immorality or anything like that. "Godless" money is the same as any other money (and I think god should be taken off of the money altogether!).Like nufsenuf said, this reminds me of the whole "muslim" controversy, as if there is something wrong with Muslims. It's just fear mongering!

Well, I have to weigh in here - isn't this somewhat akin to being called a "Muslim" (ooooooohhhh!) in it's negative connotation? We all have seen the "right" try to demonize (literally) Obama, by calling him a "Muslim", as if that's something to be ashamed or afraid of. I have to say that this is the same bigoted, discriminatory rhetoric, geared to create further polarization, fear, and reprisal. OK, jackasses - once and for all - someone's religion or faith, has NO PLACE in a political campaign! Your politics are your politics - your religion or faith is your religion or faith - and never the twain shall meet! Damn it! I am so tired of this - AND Mr. "Orally", Dwight D. Eisenhower added "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance On Flag Day, June 14, 1954. Prior to that there were 3 other versions of the "Pledge", dating from 1892, none of them mentioning "GOD"! So, get over it. This country is based on separation of church and state, and forever may it be so! Shame on you, Liddy Dole!

You gotta luv it. When they resort to this kind of crap you know that they are desperate. People with common sense don't want to hear what a turd your opponent is. They want to know where you stand on the issues that concern them. The gops are freaking out. That's ol' school for losing it.

maybe they were just going for "the nastiest, most misleading, negative ad of the campaign..." award, given after each election. hell, they have to win SOMETHING.
and actually, what is wrong with an atheist as an elected official?
when did it become necessary in THIS country to believe in a god to be elected?
