Erica Jong: Obama loss 'will spark second American Civil War. Blood will run in the streets'

Image

It seems that the final days of the presidential campaign have made Erica Jong and her friends more than a little anxious.

A few days ago, Jong, the author and self-described feminist, gave an interview to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, the choicest bits of which were brought to my attention by the reliably sharp-eyed Christian Rocca, the US correspondent of Il Foglio, who published excerpts on his Camillo blog. Basically, Jong says her fear that Obama might lose the election has developed into an "obsession. A paralyzing terror. An anxious fever that keeps you awake at night." She also says that her friends Jane Fonda and Naomi Wolf are extremely worried that Obama will be sabotaged by Republican dirty tricks, and that if an Obama loss indeed comes to pass, the result will be a second American Civil War.

Here's a translation of Jong's more spirited quotes to the Milan-based Corriere, as selected by Rocca.

"The record shows that voting machines in America are rigged."

"After having stolen the last two elections, the Republican Mafia ..."

"If Obama loses it will spark the second American Civil War. Blood will run in the streets, believe me. And it's not a coincidence that President Bush recalled soldiers from Iraq for Dick Cheney to lead against American citizens in the streets."

"Bush has transformed America into a police state, from torture to the imprisonment of reporters, to the Patriot Act."

    • After having posted on this comment earlier, My mind kept running scenarios actively and below concious thought and I had an Epiphany (or gestalt, whichever) and have come to the conclusion that Erica's "Fear of Everything" has it backwards...The Repugnantblicans KNOW Obama is gonna win this election, and the reason Shrub rescinded the Posse Comitatus Act was to have troops on hand for a Military Coup (Marshall Law) in response to the riots started by the Domestic Terrorist "Shock Troops" of the RIGHT WING!...ie: the KU KLUX KLAN, The Covenant, Sword, and Arm of The Lord, Aryan Brotherhood, and other Scumbag Asshole Cowardly Racists whose only response to their own failings is to blame others...Because the fact is that intelligence and a decent SOUL, coupled with a willingness to work together ,will accomplish the betterment and advancement of EVERYBODY...just like the Clinton years...even as I am posting this, I hear in the background on My TV(C-Span) Campaign Stumping, and Bull(shit)winky the Moose's speech in Marriot OHIO was just introduced by the song
      " Redneck Woman"...need I say more?
Yeah, I'll add this...The KKK has NEVER in My Lifetime been able to establish a public prescence in My Home Town, Kansas City, Kansas, and I take great pride in having been one of the reasons during My Adult Years...It's the HUMAN RACE You ASSHOLES, and if skin color is Your Deciding factor, YOU'RE NOT HUMAN!

    • I disagree.

Unfortunately, the slaves of the 1800's didn't START anything. The slaves didn't FINISH the fight either. In reality, it takes more than poor slaves to bring about any civil movement of this magnitude.

Dream on, Obama fans, even if he wins, we're still slaves living on the same dirt floors.

If Ayers was anywhere even near the kind of threat that low information voters have been brainwashed to believe he is; he would be one of the government's secret prisons and not teaching at a University. It's a non-issue.

Would that be Bill Ayers brother?

Bill Ayers was the terrorist, not David.

I don't know who David was.

I also think that Bill Ayers should have bombed more. I think he should be bombing more right now.

it's not like he was even blowing places that had people in them. It was more like a V for Vendetta style thing, where there were no people in the buildings.

      It's more vandalism than terrorism.

    • All of you are still asleep. There is no nation, It wqas hi-kacked and I dont see Americans getting up off their fat butts to reclaim anything. There is a email floating that :"The Rand Corp, a secret organization lobbies Pentagon: Start war to save the u.s. econmy. According to reports out of top Chinese mainstream news outlets, The Rand Corp recently presented a shocking proposal to the pentagon in which it lobbied for a war to be started with a major foreign power in an attempt to stmulate the American economy and prevent a recession." Now you can see how lowdown these leaders are. This all seems to be a power grab described by John Perkins in his book "Confessions of an economic hitman. In fact for more than half century this nation has been using hitmen to destabilize every nation with a mineral wealth and these wealthy leaders have no respect for life whether ours or theirs and American people never learn of these tactics. They are down played by being called conspiracy theories, but when the streets run red with blood here, it may be too late.

It doesn't really matter if it's Obama or McCain who gets elected.

It would be like rioting because the ice cream shop isn't selling vodka.

That's a pretty ignorant statement, given the fact I was quoting and expanding on a quotation from Thomas Jefferson, a true patriot of this nation.

Feel free to spew any more political baiting you want, just remember the forefathers who gave you the right to do so with their own blood. You'll surely forget me if should I choose to do the same.

I try like hell to remember that we're ALL Americans but after reading the leftwing vomit in this thread, I say bring it on, I'd be honored to defend my conservative and quiet neighborhood against an onslaught of unorganized menstrual pissants. • this is not a situation of "if" and it's not a situation of party. the two major parties have a long history of election tampering, but what is new in this discussion is the ease with which it can be perpetrated due to the machines used and lax testing/security

kudo's to Charlie Crist for extending the hours to vote early, but across the US, there have already been laws passed during the off years that make it more difficult to vote, less secure to count and harder to detect tampering - for either party.

McCain's not the devil, he's just a bad politician, especially considering the practice he's had. I've watched Obama since he was a state senator, there's nothing more to fear than any other politician in an election year.

GOP's beware of burying your head on this issue, most hackers are Dem's and it's not that difficult

    • Well, I would say the fix is in. Joe Scarborough is talking about the race closing this morning. I think mainstream media will start spinning McCain for the next three days.

Mainstream media have been enablers for the right for the past eight years. They havent changed, they are the same ones who enabled war with Iraq. They spun fake documents and fixed facts as real justification for war. The DOD even scripted them as to what to report. It was all done in plain sight. It has been exposed. People just move along.

Move along, nothing to see here?

    • historically, the united states has done very well with divided houses of government.

if democrats win a number of house and senate seats, even without a filibuster proof majority the democrats voice will be heard.

so, if mccain is elected, it'll be interesting to see how he leads, and how much the house and senate goes along with his policies.

that for me will be the key.
when he launches war on iran or the taxation scheme stays the same or grants even more to the wealthy, if healthcare reform goes away again and the tent cities of homeless and desperate grow unnoticed, that'll be the time to go.

because it'll show the whole system is wrong.

    • If McCain wins fair and square, fine.

If McCain dies and we end up with President Palin... God help us.

If Obama wins far and square, we're better off for it, IMO.

If Obama dies and Biden takes over... fair enough.

If either candidate wins via cheating, the only honorable thing to do, which should have happened 8 years ago, is to forfeit the election. Of course, that won't happen. But I can't support a cheater, for what it's worth.

    • "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure." -Thomas Jefferson.

The tree of liberty is rotting and dying due to our own denial and apathy. If someone does not renew the soil the fruits of liberty will shrivel and die, and the tree itself will wither into dust.

Despite who wins the election, we must always remember that it is we the people who are the gardeners in the forest of freedom, and that it is our resposibility to protect the foliage.

    • Obama is the real deal and is who he says he is....a smart savy bright star on his way up to the leadership of the free world....with a team of the best of the best circling him to protect democracy, guide, and deliver us from the hell fire storm of the past 8 years. See it, feel it , believe it, know it, pray it, empower it, breathe it . I am trusting, optimistic and clear that this vision can and will be a reality, and a landslide. All GOp dirty tricks will backfire, traitors will pay their due, and our country will go in a new direction. I have been thru dark dark nights of doubt and fear about this....and now all that is left is certainty, victory, karmic justice. It is time the best man wins, it is time the nightmare is over. There is no other scenario...Now is the time for all our inner power to be used on creating the certainty and the vision of the best outcome. Pessimism is not the best course. take all preventive action, and visualize what would make you smile and cheer and celebrate on Nov 4th.

Say NO to any other outcome. Millions doing this will make a difference. We know all the bug-a-boo, but It won't be allowed to happen!

Stop creating drama and static at a time when we need a common vision of the best outcome. Resist you paranoia, insecurity and fear scenarios. Watch your minds, because it is in repeating these old outmoded responses that Obama's values are defeated.

Black.....White ....what is this shit/ we are in this together for freedom....that is what all our good and righteous forefathers died for in this nation....black and white alike. There is no loosing for Obama, he is not a loser. Some of you however sound like real paranoid, freaky desperate loosers.

Don't kill Obamas ideals and values by becoming scared and shooting off your mouths with threats. We do not need that.....OBAMA WON!!!! He is a winner, he is a real true human, he is all that and more . He is running to show us what a real hero looks like and to help us out of the ignorance, prejudice and hatred that elected Bush twice. Don't fuck it up for him by propigating it in Obama's name. Be as confident as you are strong. Keep the faith. Act and think and visualize skillfully till the election is won.

You're either real dumb or mad stupid. If there were to be rioting, it wouldn't be just some "blacks", there are plenty of indignant whites out there also.

Since you root for the "right" you aren't aware of the constitutional violation this country and its people have suffered. Get the flag out of your face. The Bush regime hasn't been true Americans. Bush has left this country in shambles yet your racially motivated ass would rather kick around in a war torn country than try to heal the damage...

    • "In order to protect these libertys, The Right of The People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"
Even though I am a life-long Outdoorsman, Hunter, and Conservationist, I have had an uphill battle trying to make other "Liberals"(A category I'm proud to be a member of, along with being a Dues-Paid NRA Life Member)understand that hunting or even protecting ourselves from the indigeous Native Americans Who objected to being on the short end of history at that time WAS NOT the reason for the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution...It took a Republican Attorney General to point out it was included so that the CITIZENRY could protect themselves from an attempted Coup, Military or thru Illegal, UNCONSTITUTIONAL actions of corrupt, power-mad elements of Our own government.(I didn't like John A., but He earned My undying respect for that official legal opinion, made public.(I figured it out about the time I actually took an interest in history,@ 12 yrs old, in 1968)
Nobody with any sanity or decency WANTS to HAVE TO get involved in an Armed Rebellion...By the same ticket, NO TRUE AMERICAN will stand for having Our Nation STOLEN by the Financialy Richest(and Morally Poorest) 1% of the population, and the fearful, ignorant racists they use as Their pawns.
IF They succeed in interfering with, manipulating, or stealing this election(and I personally believe that's the ONLY way They'll "win" this time) I have enough faith and belief in the inherant decency of the majority of The People to firmly believe it WON'T be a "RACE" war, like the earlier Gentleman commentator whose name eludes Me, I'm lily-white (to all appearances, anyway...the 3 varied Native American blood-line strands in My DNA aren't obvious) and see more hope from OBAMA than anyone since Bobby Kennedy...to repeat what I've said for decades, and I saw someone else post in a comment earlier, We're the HUMAN RACE...and it's The SOUL, not Skin Color that determines whether someone's HUMAN.
I'll be doing My part as a volunteer Sunday, I'll be praying the Lawyers, Media Coverage,& Peoples awareness this time around keep the Scumbag Thieves at bay, but My legally purchased & owned Military -Grade Weapons are cleaned and loaded, just in case, 'cuz pitchforks and torches ain't gonna cut it....and I doubt I'm alone in loving the way America is SUPPOSED TO BE !

If Obama loses, the people will protest.
Some of the people will also riot.
All will get the same treatment from the GOP though.
The police and the Army are here, on our soil, in
our cities, waiting for the moment to strike against
      the crowds of protestors.

      It would be ugly.

A Civil War in America if Obama lost would not be driven by racism. It would be driven by diversity against racism. And a revolution against the antidemocratic forces in America.

Now if Barack wins we will also have violence from the far right (neo-nazis, imperial klan, SWA etc) again, more concentrated than during Clinton's time, I just hope they really are an insignificant minority (but I am afraid they aren't).

The powers that be have no respect for the American masses. They assume we are too fat and spoiled, by nearly a century and a half of homeland "peace" and divided by the trivial to rebel...

the discussion was about domestic response, but it is very true that what happens in the US affects the world. It is an interesting idea that the whole world could react, I think that is possible, just as 15 million people around the world protested before the Iraq war. It was the first time ever that a war was protested before it began and the protest occured around the world.

The protests against the Chinese regime were global as well.

Perhaps we are looking at a new kind of globailzation.

How inspiring...the peoples of the world could pressure regimes, not just other governments.

I sincerely believe there will be protests (and sadly riots) around the world if the election is stolen. I think even those in other countries will be outraged and protest at US Embassies. George Bush has left such a bad taste in not just the US, but the world's mouth and Barack Obama has offered something so sublime and hopeful that the outrage at that being taken away will be great.

    • Jong is right, her language might be a bit extreme, but I'm not sleeping well either. If Naomi Klein is a friend of hers, she knows the theory of the "Shock Doctrine", they both know about Naomi Wolf's "End of America", none of them are so naive to think that Obama is a savior. They do understand that he is a student and teacher of the US constitution. They also know that the damage the Bush administration has done has served to undo all of the protections of the US constitution.

We are in danger of loosing our liberty, as studied by Naomi Wolf. We are in danger of significant civil unrest as incited by military and police action.

Elections have been tampered with and swung to the benefit of the right since 1998, the election shenanigans we hear about in the press are the minor issue, the manipulation of the tabulation of the national vote counts is the real issue and it is enough to swing the election.

They know that if Obama loses this election, we lose our opportunity to reinstate our constitution, and we lose those precious minutes before it is too late to address global warming, if it is not already too late.

      It sounds like hyperbole...its not.

      is

      Obama wins.

If on the other hand they simply talk about voting and don't go and stand in the lines, then maybe he does get beat and guess who will be to blame?

Then carry that LOAD on your shoulders yourself.

No way they the under 30 Vote, turned out for KERRY.

      I VOTED FOR OBAMA already.

Those, under 30, are the future of this NATION.

Together we as a nation STAND. Divided we fall.

NO ONE is going to take down this NATION. That is the very thing that sorry buzzard wanting when he hit NY in 2001. If Obama wins, WE GO AFTER HIS SORRY A@@.

As bad as this place has been for the last 8 years it is ten times better than any place else. If you don't feel that way. MOVE.

I just like the odds of having an election that isn't close. A whole bunch of elections have been close, and everybody gets a sense of insecurity that if its close, then the powerful get to have their way with us some more.

We need to keep talking about getting our country back, even after the elections. We have to keep talking about it and keep writing our elected representatives and senators, and give them the evidence that they would need, in order to resist falling for the power structure again. If a representative or a senator goes up to vote on a bill, and he/orshe has a lot of evidence that people will back him/or her up when he/orshe does vote, we have a chance of getting our country back. We can't just go back to video games or smoke or booze and let things go the way we always have. We have to STAY involved.

People are counting on us. Our kids and grand kids need us to stay after these butt heads who are trying to steal our country.

But hell.........if we have to go down in smoke trying to defend our freedom from the powerful. Kiss my grits! Lets go down in smoke!

    • i think it would be a shame and not very patriotic if there was not a huge showing of civil unrest .. certainly the rest of the world would expect it.. i also fear that over the last 8 years bush/cheney etc have things quite in place to snuff a revolution out quickly and make it difficult to organize a resistance .. with the extensive spying on all phone and internet our government has .. and the setting up of ridiculous amounts of fema camps to detain those who would
be given the title of "terrorist" . yep.. there go your rights. in fact any demonstrations not registered and kept within the prescribed "freedom zones" would be subject to arrest..sure is good we've been warring over there against them terrorists who want to take away our freedoms??. have i mention the deployment of us army for crowd control as of october 1st .. yep it seems there could be things happening.

and if obama wins.. with the far right whipped into a frenzy of racism hate and fear .. that could cause problems as well.. but i'd like to hope most would at least give obama a chance . i mean.. we gave 8 years to bush.. and he may not even have actually deserved it .. seems he deserves more than just going down in history as the worst president ever .. but i suppose he'll get off . unless he declares martial law
that is so odd that this nut bush can actually do that??

    • Okay so if Obama loses it will be because
      A) The ballot machines are rigged to vote for McCain
      B) It's a racist conspiracy
      C) The Republicans in Florida managed to get to the majority of the Democrat votes and destroy their ballots. (OH wait that was the Gore-Bush election year)
      D) Bushes "people" who helped mastermind 9/11 got together with Bush's "weather-control" people that created the tsunami in indonesia as well as Hurrican Katrina to destroy New Orleans (the African-Americans there were Democrat voters) have finally become so cunning that they actually found a way to kill all the democrats and in their place put mindless zombies who are helpless against Bush, Mc Cain and their leader Sarah Palin. These mindless zombies were then programmed to vote for Republicans on Nov. 4th

HAHAHAAAAA! YOU SILLY DEMOCRATS! WE REPUBLICANS ARE TOO CONNIVING AND EVIL, WE ARE ALWAYS ONE STEP AHEAD OF YOU!! snicker snicker {bite's the head off a baby seal and scoffs} YOU KNEW WE WOULD RESORT TO ANYTHING TO GET OUR GUY IN POWER - YOU'VE KNOWN ALL ALONG, SINCE GORE - BUSH - THAT WE WILL STOP AT NOTHNG TO RULE THE WORLD!!!!!!!!

Great comments....sums it up. GOP runs illegal election or whatever fantasy they can dream up. Amazes me how they take NO responsibilty for what they do...they are too busy now inciting riots before the votes are even counted. And to the guy who wrote about "all the plans, bringing men home from Iraq, Fema, Coffins"...you have WAY too much time on your hands and have watched to many movies.

    • rioting is almost guaranteed if obama loses, unfortunately, but civil war is right on the edge of impossible. however, to say that obama losing would under no circumstances spark a civil war--especially if it comes to light that election-tampering by republicans was the primary or sole cause--is to be in denial regarding the stability of american society. yes, america can hold it together most of the time, but there's definitely a breaking point somewhere.

    • Get packing. There are plenty that want McCain to win - don't be fooled by all the Internet sites, TV ads, Radio spots that Obama's endless pocket full of money has bought. If you want to move if McCain wins - there are plenty to help you pack. If you want to riot - riot - you'll find yourself standing without as many as you think that are out there. Just once I'd like something that came out of Obama's mouth match his voting record - but then that would require someone to actually care beyond his smooth talking and READ. Want to check out his record - his true record or McCains for that matter - check out this site :
      http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=9490

Want to see another interesting article regarding how Obama's monopolized the internet and the facts that HE wants you to know and nothing else - check this out :

      http://hillbuzz.wordpress.com/2008/10/30/confession-of-an-obama-blogger-by-sarah...

The tactics he's used is pathetic and this will all come to light after the election - then most of these posters will fall off the grid - pathetic.

You can make your websites, post your many blogs, eventually people will see through your tactics and it's a joke. Don't let this smooth talker basically buy this election with false promises, false postings and ads by people who are being paid to nothing but push Obama's propaganda. gag - I've talked to many now, gotten emails from bloggers admitting doing this - it's old and we're seeing right through you. move on already.

It sounds like some people are already "inciting a riot". I am so sick of their threats and accusations about rigged elections. Acorn has been planning a huge partisan, illegal registration for Obama for years.

I already voted McCain. I like Obama but you will all be disillusioned with what he can actually produce. Its all a hoax and no, you won't be getting huge welfare cks in the mail.

Unlike most Democrats who make their only contribution constant "whining, hate-mongering,threats to leave"? (watch the video from the "Liberal who hates Liberals"accuses his own party)...my plan has always been through the years, once a party is elected, support them and expect the best by writing your Congressman and other forms of protest.I think after Bush, either candidate will do all they can to make "Change".

Riots aren't pretty and they are illegal and people will die. So if you are planning it (I sat peacefully protesting the Viet Nam war) be prepared for the consequences. Any government will be obliged to protect innocent citizens against threats of harm to people and property by "rioting"

And PLEEZE, don't mention Jane Fonda's name . She is a disgraceful American...if you are not aware, just google her name w/ Viet Nam. It was all publicity for her to jumpstart her pathetic "Barbarella career". And if I had not already lost respect for her, I truly did when she wrote about her "threesomes to satisfy her Democratic husband who was a Senator in CA"! TOO much info Barbarella!

    • People are far more apathetic then that in America. But I believe It would spark a lot of protest and controversy. Can you imagine if Obama wins popular and not electoral like Al Gore?

I know a lot of people are considering moving if McCain wins.

    • I think her use of civil war was a hyperbole just meant to say that the citizens of this country will protest and fight any fraudulent behavior instead of just sitting by angered and defeated again.

People being afraid and stressed out to the point of not being able to sleep seems ridiculous, but I do believe that this is true: some people really have put their hopes into this election as seen by the tremendous number of new voters and people watching and attending the candidate's speeches and debates. Trust me, Gore's conceding was utter disappointment but there was nothing to be done, and now another true hope has risen and if it's stolen again, people aren't going to accept this. Obama has already hired tons of lawyers. Let's just hope that it doesn't come to that.

    • It only sounds crazy for the people that live in denial.
If you read current everyday, you will find out that republican's dirty tricks go well over a mean-ad on TV.

Heres a small list of things Bush can do anything he wants:

Call a martial law, which will disable the constitution.

Call all kinds of military and special forces to do missions in USA.

      Cancel the elections.

Arrest and prison any kind of dissident/protester as a "terrorist"

FEMA has already a bunch of jails (and coffins) around the whole country, to arrest any kind of "terrorist"

      and the list goes on.

So, um. It doenst sound too crazy to me.
It may be improbable, it may be stupid. But definetly not crazy and not impossible.

    • it won't be black v. white either, my lily white ass is ready go!

start soaking your torches and grab your pitchforks, but the American people are too apathetic to have an effective overthrow.

regrettable were such an event to occur because the economic cost would be misplaced and local. too inconvenient to drive all the way to the home of the legislator who relaxed the laws that monitor voting, hassle with security, blah blah blah. I mean, what if there's a good zombie movie on that night? civil wars are way too inconvenient.

OR... register a voter assembly and get in the front row - peacefully (but bring your pitchfork just in case)

I'd have to disagree with you there. Blacks have become complacent with many things, they are too tired to do anything else, but you can bet, they wont be complacent with this. If they are fodder for the prisons, may as well go for something worthwhile. Life in prison will be the same as life out here.

    • Sorry but I don't see this happening. Perhaps a few isolated incidents but a Civil War. I don't think so. There is always an unsavory element that will riot just for the sake of doing it and may use this as an excuse.
We may have one after he is in office for a while if the people get up off their collective butts and attempt to return this country to constitutional rule

    • Even should Obama 'win' that won't mean votes weren't stolen if the machines have glitches and can be hacked. But I suppose then it would be ok?

'Basically, Jong says her fear that Obama might lose the election has developed into an "obsession. A paralyzing terror. An anxious fever that keeps you awake at night."

      Please. Spare me.

    • I just asked my finacee tonight where he'd like to go rioting if Obama loses. I'd like to say I'm joking, but there is a serious possibility that "social unrest" will blow up- people are pissed, disenchanted and untrusting of their own government. We could see some serious shit pop off!

i agree, i am going to protest if obama looses. i am tired of this "democracy" asking , no telling me to bend over and take it up the ass. there are alot more of Obama supporters than there are McPalins. and for once we should stand up for ourselves.

    • It is a justified response if they steal this one, and the proof will be seen early with the amount of observers
taking part this time and vote verification, which the republican operatives are not fully aware of. We have literally tens of thousands of lawyers and volunteers awaiting election night. I pitty the fools that try anything this time.
