Still no medical records from Palin

With three days left until the election, the John McCain campaign still has not, despite frequent requests, released any information about vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's medical history, prompting some well-warranted skepticism.

Of course there are plenty of perfectly innocent explanations. The governor is perfectly healthy and the campaign feels no public pressure to release information? The doctor is on vacation and unreachable? The dog ate their records?

There are also more sinister explanations. But we won't go there.

Last Sunday morning, Palin spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt told ABC News that Palin's staff planned to release information regarding her medical history "early in the week."

That was six days ago. ABC News has asked repeatedly about the status of the release of information and received no updates from the campaign. It is unclear what is holding things up.

"We'll let you know when we have something to say," spokeswoman Maria Comella said on Thursday. Today she had no comment when asked again.

Aides suggested privately that there was nothing to hide in the records, but that it was simply taking a while to call doctors and round up the appropriate information to release.

It was ten days ago that Governor Palin said she would be "fine" with releasing her records.

She is the only one of the presidential or vice presidential candidates who has not released any health information about herself.

Palin did suggest that releasing her records could be fodder for political attacks of some kind.

"So be it, if that will allow some curiosity seekers, perhaps, to have one more thing that they can either check the box off that they can find something to criticize, perhaps, or find something to rest them assured over. Fine. I'm healthy, I'm happy, had five kids. That is going to be in the medical records. Never been seriously ill or hurt. You will see that in the medical records if they're released," Palin told NBC's Brian Williams on October 22.

    • Why should Sarah Palin release her medical records?

Barack Obama, Joe Biden and John McCain all have. Many candidates for the presidency and other elected offices have released their over the years, often in response to voters' concerns that the candidate might suffer from a condition which might affect their performance in office or indicate they might not live out their term.

There's no obligation for a candidate to release medical records, though. Plenty of candidates never released theirs, thought usually they weren't asked to, either.

But Sarah Palin and other representatives of the McCain-Palin campaign have repeatedly said they would release her records. They even gave a approximate dates when the records would be released, which have passed.

Sarah Palin could have said her medical records were no one's business but hers, her family's and her doctors'. She could have pointed out that cases where a candidate's medical records revealed something harmful in the public's mind to their candidacy have been vanishingly rare. She could have said her medical records were irrelevant and encouraged voters, the media and her opponents in the presidential race to focus on more important issues like what the next administration's policies on issues like taxes, alternative energy, war, foreign policy, the collapse of the economy, and health care should be. But she did none of those things.

Sarah Palin said she would release her records, and she should stand by her word.

    • I can't believe people are still harping on the "question" of Obama's birth certificate.

The state of Hawaii can't give out copies of it for legal reasons, but the Obama campaign released a copy to the media and on BarackObama.com -- MONTHS ago, and it's STILL there -- and Hawaii officials have verified that it is genuine and unaltered.

Yet I met a woman last night who had heard for the first time just in the last few days that Obama doesn't have a valid U.S. birth certificate and doesn't trust him on that basis. People are knowingly continuing to spread what has conclusively been proven a lie. That doesn't reflect badly on Obama; it reflects badly on the people resorting to lies in order to oppose his candidacy.

What's next -- accusing Obama of being a space alien intending to turn the Earth into a vast farm raising human flesh for consumption by slimy eight-legged monsters from Mars?

    • I don't see the need for any of the candidates to disclose medical history. Unless there is reason to suspect something compelling - that would affect the candidacy - than it doesn't seem all that important. The focus, I feel should be on political record which Palin has plenty of dirt for those to work with. I mean this backwoods bumpkin believes that man walked with dinosaurs, right?

    • Don't try and tell me that things are changing for the better! She going to be just like Cheney, and keep everything from the public. People need more facts to be able to vote the right way!

    • GOV. SARAH PALIN WAS PREGNANT WHEN SHE GOT MARRIED 20 YEARS AGO -
If you research her marriage date & the birth date of her first child, you will find that 7 months after she surprised her family by suddenly eloping, she had a full-term baby boy. So her health records will show that she was pregnant when got married. This represents a second generation from this family for whom sexual abstinence birth control instruction did not work.

The health record disclosure of national candidates is standard procedure and anyone not willing to conform to this request can probably look forward to losing. Also, perhaps she or her husband contracted a sexually transmitted disease from outside the marriage, or perhaps there is some question about who the father of her child is. It must be something extreme or she would not be willing to pay the political price of not releasing these records.

    • Excuse me? They are Sarah Palins personal records and not for public scrutiny! If Sarah Palin has medical records that would imply she has not the robust mental capacity to continue the role to the end of term, then somebody ought not to have put her forward. However it is intrusive to request personal records at this late stage. it is like attempting to close the stable gate after the horse has bolted.

    • People use your heads for thinking independent of the media spin. Call your doctor's office and request all of your records - see how long it will take. It will be more than a few days if you want complete records.

    • If she says she has nothing to hide, but still hasn't disclosed her medical records, what kind of a vice presidential candidate would she make? We can't afford to have other Bush/Chaney types that are above the law or think that they don't have to comply with norms that are expected of them.

again, i'm going to assume you lot are slightly mentally deficient and so I'm going to type this with capital letters

HAWAII HAS ALREADY RELEASED A STATEMENT SAYING OBAMA'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE IS VALID. THEY SIMPLY DON'T RELEASE BIRTH CERTIFICATES TO THE PUBLIC.

so basically your questioning the entire state of hawaii of being guilty of a conspiracy. that makes no sense.

      you're quite special :)

if all that is true and i know it is not. why then did nobama refuse to provide his real birth cert to the courts instead of trying to and successfully got the proceedings thrown out of court. he could have ended any doubt by doing this. instead he choose to waste taxpayers money {get used to it when he wins it will happen alot} by fighting in court the release of his proof. actually what hawaii said was they werent releasing his certs because all records are sealed.........or at least all of his. get you facts strait before you come back again please. i hate wasting my time on the ill informed.

    • Anybody ever work for an insurance company? Try requesting medical records? The standard time it takes is 4 - 6 weeks people not a few days.
