Millions of Americans will be heading to the polls to cast their votes over the coming hours as the first polls have just opened in the northeastern state of Vermont.

In what has been the the most expensive presidential election in history, with estimates on spending around £1.5bn, Barack Obama is reportedly leading his Republican rival John McCain by more than seven points in the latest average of national polls from realclearpolitics.com.

Both candidates spent a hectic final day campaigning across the country in a bid to bump their votes in some of the key states of Arizona, Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio, which could prove vital for the undecided voters.

The first results have already been announced with Current.com user Brendan_M showing us that the small east coast town of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire has voted for Obama with a ratio of 15 to 6:

    • OBAMA ALL THE WAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!! We need something new and fresh. We need hope, we need some light, and the weights we have carried for sooooooo long. It is up to us to hold ourselves accountable as well as our new Pres. Obama. Times are harder now, the children we rear up and train need to be examples for the future. We cannot do that with poor perception. I work with teens and I love them but a lot of them are misguided and have no clue that they matter.

    • The terrorist crap is just that, crap. Fear mongers during this election campaign played on fears and biases. We have a new president. How he succeeds or fails, is up to us. Get over it and get on board. If not, get out.

    • I believe being in the Senate, he has been investigated, checked out, checked over, looked at, scrutinized and put under a microscope. Get over the terrorist supporter crap, stop spreading fear and hate. My son...my only child died while I myself was in the military, so please do not even go there. If he were alive and had chosen to serve in the military, he would probably be in Iraq right this minute. I would be proud of him, but that doesn't mean I would want him there.

People like you are the reason there would be more terrorist attacks, not because of President Obama.

      P.S.
I am going to find out for sure tho....I cannot imagine our representatives holding positions involving national security not undergoing investigations.

    • The concept of spending a lot of money isn't a shock but the actual amounts blows my mind. I guess as time goes on, things like this will get bigger and better and, as a result, the spending goes through the roof.

    • Either way history will be made.

The USA will have its first black President or its first female Vice President.

I for one will be watching into the late hours ...

    • Key times for election results:

      3pm PDT / 11pm GMT
The first results start to come in with all eyes on with Indiana's. Dubya won by 20 points last time but it's very close now.
      4pm PDT / Midnight GMT
      Florida's results come in.

      4.30pm PDT / 12.30am GMT
Results from Ohio. No Republican has ever won without this state. If McCain loses it, Obama has a very good chance of moving into the White House.

      5pm PDT / 1am GMT
The polls close in 19 states but the important one is Pennsylvania. Obama has a big lead here though McCain has targeted the state heavily.

      6pm PDT / 2am GMT
The key Western swing states come in: Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico.

      9pm PDT / 5am GMT
The last state to record its votes is Alaska - home of Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin.
