Berlusconi hails "suntanned" Obama

Berlusconi and his team have already managed to make two unfortunate remarks about the 44th President of the US in less than 48 hours since his election.

"Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi gave an enthusiastic, if unconventional, welcome on Thursday to the election of Barack Obama, citing among his attributes youth, good looks and a 'suntan'.

Berlusconi, who himself sports a year-round tan, is famed in diplomatic circles for making sometimes inappropriate quips."

"Hackles were also raised by a statement from the People of Freedom’s group leader in the Senate, Maurizio Gasparri, which upset the PD and other political groups. 'There are lots of question marks over Obama. With him in the White House, Al Qaeda could well be happier'."

The Italian Centre-left party (PD) is urging Berlusconi and Gasparri to apologise.

    • Isn't the reason Obama's victory is being greeted over there as so pregressive because its something they feel they couldn't accomplish within thier own electorate? I'd say the U.S. earned the effusive praise we are getting by putting our money where our mouths were and well quite frankly for behaving like American's again. Considering that france had race riots as recently as two years ago and that only one black serves in the cabinet there let alone how Italians treat Brazillian or Turkish immigrants whew, the rest of the world is going to have a rude awakening when launching themselves into a dialogue about thier own race relations after labeling the U.S. ignorant and intolerant the last eight years.

    • Europeans are very racist?! I'd have to disagree with that one.

      Although Berlusconi's arse of a comment didn't help much with that preconception...
