Ottar, a monthly magazine published by the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education, said the prosthetics will be available to women seeking to undergo a sex change operation starting Jan. 1, 2009, The Local reported Thursday.
The move was designed to promote equality due to the publicly funded wigs, breast implants and hair removal operations available for transsexual women.
However, some have criticized the plan because the prosthetic penises being offered by health authorities cannot be used to urinate and cannot become erect.
"It's easy to think that it's pretty strange to approve prosthetics that can't get erect, because that is after all what penises do -- get erections. It would be appropriate to pay for those as well," said Cecilia Dhejne, a sexologist and specialist in psychiatry at Karolinska Hospital in the city of Huddinge.
Health authorities said they cannot offer free fully-functional prosthetic penises because of regulations that bar them from using taxpayer money for products or procedures aimed that are considered sexual aids.

At one time this not working penis would be just the thing here in Texas our parole and probation offices got beat, so they found others that are in the restroom with you and see it all. One would think that they would find a better job but this may be their dream job!

hahaha..I wonder if this thing will be used as much as "Inga" or the penis enlargement jokes that has been in (especially american) movies.
I haven't heard anything about it here in Swedish news so far, that's the funniest part.
(Investigation begins...:P )

Yes, I suppose you would want a penis that can become erect.

What's the point of giving them penises that don't work. So a 'non-functioning' prosthetic penis is not considered a sexual aid and a 'functioning' one is?

So basically they are giving away dildos for free.
Why don't they stop beating around the bush and just tell it like it is?!

If you're going to give out penises, at least give out ones that work?
Um... could this "working penis" by any chance be detached and um... put to use? :) Say a little rough useage? :)

Every once in a blue moon an article shows up in Current that defies any additional commentary or opinion from me beyond a single exclamation.
This is one of them.
