Sarah Palin's attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism provoked a spike in death threats against the future president, Secret Service agents revealed during the final weeks of the campaign.
The Republican vice presidential candidate attracted criticism for accusing Mr Obama of "palling around with terrorists", citing his association with the sixties radical William Ayers.
The attacks provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling "terrorist" and "kill him" until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric.
But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further.
The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin's attacks.
Michelle Obama, the future First Lady, was so upset that she turned to her friend and campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett and said: "Why would they try to make people hate us?"
The revelations, contained in a Newsweek history of the campaign, are likely to further damage Mrs Palin's credentials as a future presidential candidate. She is already a frontrunner, with Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, to take on Mr Obama in four years time.
Details of the spike in threats to Mr Obama come as a report last week by security and intelligence analysts Stratfor, warned that he is a high risk target for racist gunmen. It concluded: "Two plots to assassinate Obama were broken up during the campaign season, and several more remain under investigation. We would expect federal authorities to uncover many more plots to attack the president that have been hatched by white supremacist ideologues."
Irate John McCain aides, who blame Mrs Palin for losing the election, claim Mrs Palin took it upon herself to question Mr Obama's patriotism, before the line of attack had been cleared by Mr McCain.
That claim is part of a campaign of targeted leaks designed to torpedo her ambitions, with claims that she did not know that Africawas a continent rather than a country.
The advisers have branded her a "diva" and a "whack job" and claimed that she did not know which other countries are in the North American Free Trade Area, (Canada and Mexico). They say she spent more than $150,000 on designer clothes, including $40,000 on her husband Todd and that she refused to prepare for the disastrous series of interviews with CBS's Katie Couric.
In a bid to salvage her reputation Mrs Palin came out firing in an interview with CNN, dismissing the anonymous leakers in unpresidential language as "jerks" who had taken "questions or comments I made in debate prep out of context."
She said: "I consider it cowardly. It's not true. That's cruel, it's mean-spirited, it's immature, it's unprofessional and those guys are jerks if they came away taking things out of context and then tried to spread something on national news that's not fair and not right."
She was not asked about her incendiary rhetoric against Mr Obama. But she did deny the spending spree claims, saying the clothes in question had been returned to the Republican National Committee. "Those are the RNC's clothes, they're not my clothes. I asked for anything more than maybe a diet Dr Pepper once in a while. These are false allegations."
Speaking as she returned to her native Alaska, Mrs Palin claimed to be baffled by what she claims was sexism on the national stage. "Here in Alaska that double standard isn't applied because these guys know that Alaskan women are pretty tough, on a par with the men in terms of being outdoors, working hard," she said.
"They're commercial fishermen, they're pilots, they're working up on the North slope in the oil fields. You see equality in Alaska. I think that was a bit of as surprise on the national level."

Firstly, we all should thank the 'wise' decision of the McCain campaign juggernaut for the priceless expose' of the level of degeneracy the Republican party had slipped into by the appointment of Palin to such post of immense prominence - deputy presidential candidate.
Secondly, every American should seek that knowledge that releases they from the harrowing grip of the status-quo that latches on to the doctrine that the creed of an individual should preclude them from being messianic in nature. GIve me a break. The reason the death threats increased is because it became clearer that he could win and therefore they felt the need to react.
I can tell you from being out in public in high per centage black gatherings the general discussion increased about the possibility of Obama getting murdered if he was elected increased even when I was at the lab getting blood work drawn which the lobby had about 30 people in it discussing that possiblity. None of them had been to a recent Palin rally but were responding to the ideal that he might win and they didn't want to get their hopes up.

No, we should not let it go. There are peaceful activists who planned to support protesters during the RNC who are up on charges of conspiracy to incite riot. They face up to 7 years in jail. They were arrested before the RNC even opened.
Journalists were arrested and jailed, cameras were confiscated so that police could get away with crimes with no cameras rolling.
If we want to live in a country where only the poor go to jail, and ciminals with money and power never do, then we should "let it go".

You may think Healthcare is a basic right, maybe so, I don't deny that, but who pays for that. I don't want to pay for other peoples healthcare, I have trouble affording it for myself and my family. Not to mention where the decisions on your care would be made. A doctor and myself should decide what is best for me not a bureaucrat in Washington. There are two ways to understand "spreading the wealth." To take what someone has worked hard and giving it to those who did not work for it is un-American.
But, this is not what Pre-elect Obama is talking about- the middle class is disappearing at an alarming rate- why? CEO's taking all the profit and the rest of those working making under the proverty line. Many losing their retirment to these CEOs practice. Eron and there are many more. Exxon made record profits! Oct 30th, 2008- 14.80 BILLIONS DOLLARS. And people were going without food to drive to work. I believe price gauging is wrong and illegal. But, we have an oil president in Office. And Exxon is getting tax brakes and then this burden is on people who make less than 250,000. and most people don't make more than 40,000 a year. Example: so if a person making 40,000 pays between 10%-20% in taxes that is going to put them in proverty.. And then someone who is making 300,000. and paying 10%-20% they are going to still be wealthy and still paying the same percentage wise BUT this is what is happening there are huge tax brakes for the wealthy that are not in place for those making less than 250,000. The poor pay more out of pocket than the wealthy.
About healthcare: again our Insurance and ph- and they charge us the more than they charge the rest of the world. And Bush vetoed Congress and Senate to give the same to Americans.
And all Obama wants to do is have everyone to have healthcare. And think - if we all were on the same healthcare program -one big HMO- it would be cheap. Remember, big business has worked very hard for the USA to think it would be bad and cost more -when really- the opposite is true. We are fourth in world proverty. 4th! We need to educate ourselves on what really happening. When was the last time you saw a CHristian Children's Fund commercial?? And Pre-elect Obama did not accept money from Lobbyists. He is not sitting in anyone's pocket. Made more money- why Obama recieved 1dollar- 50 dollars from millions of Americans. And when millions of Americans are in your pocket- sounds like Jerry Lewis Tele-a-thon to me. we got what will cure this ailing country. Time to heal and put America back to work. This forum is absolutely hilarious. When you read about the investigation the secret service actually conducted (as opposed to the UK rag's sensationalized version) they found no basis in fact for just about all of this. No one said "kill him" etc. That's the secret service's report. This "article" is fantasy land, which for media these days is about right.
Now, I didn't vote for Barak, but I'm keeping an open mind about him. I already support him fully as our president-elect, 100%, and proudly. He has not done a whole lot, but I do believe he is intelligent and capable. I wish him all the best. With that, the level of hate and intolerance on this forum from people whose politics is all about tolerance is sadly, but not surprisingly, revealing.

Politician don't have the privacy right that a normal citizen has, like many people have said they should be held at a higher standard. They vie for power and money, promise things they rarely give the people who have worked for them and voted for them.
Like a few have said already, forgiven she is, forgotten it is not yet. She was already being investigated for Troopergate, that alone should have exempted her from VP pick. However the McCain camp wanted to show the people that John was the one that was caring and that Obama was not because he did not have Hilary on the ticket.
It was just proven that he has failed.

We never really end hate unless we forget to love and grant FORGIVENESS.
The hatred was always there, simmering in some cases. In other cases, boiling over. We have to take responsibility for all of our actions. You must take a stand in your everyday life. Examine your own conscience. Be honest about what is truly there and why. You have to do the work yourself and clean out your own closets. Some folks have more work to do than others, because they have spent a lifetime in limbo. Maybe you are married to someone who makes racist jokes all the time. No, he may never go out an burn down a church or synagogue, or send white powder through the mail. But you tolerate his "humor" all the same. You never stop him. Just like you never stop others who are dear to you. You never let them know outright that you find their behavior ridiculous. Many of people are there in limbo with themselves. The fact that she and John McCain agreed to take the low road for election is a sad day in American History. If these two individuals so love this country, then why would they resort to trickery and lies? Quite probably, because they were hoping that Americans really would prefer a "White" president who had no original ideas, no inspiration for the future. And by adding on the hatemongering to help put them over the top in the elections. Not to mention the ballot tampering, lost registrations,,etc.....The republican party thought wrong!!! The bottom line is, that people, especially those who should have a high level of integrity, have to know that they must and will always be held accountable for what they say and what they do in the public domain. Therefore, we must never forget that the individuals who chose to disregard this precept will be made to answer for their actions and the infractions, thus, will not easily be forgotten. Otherwise, we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over, by allowing the abuse of and the betrayal of the public trust to continue unabated.
Palin's and McCain's attempted disparagement of their opponents, is a good example of the kind of backstabbing that many in politics turn a blind eye to. This sort of behavior only causes our country to slide backward in progress and makes us look bad in the eyes of the rest of the world...
For those on this and other such sites, I say run them through the ringer until we're sure that they and the public in general will never forget the abusiveness and negativity they project. That's just part of being in public office...and in the public eye...

The Republican Party, McCain, the local police and FBI are as guilty as Palin herself. They should of stopped her the first time she roused the crowd to scream Kill Him. There are laws to prevent inciting to riot that were ignored, their were governors and mayors and senators that ignored it. The list goes on. And should anything happen, she should be sitting along the person who did anything or attempts to do anything in court.

The title of this piece is misleading. The original NEWSWEEK article states that the U.S. Secret Service noticed an increase in death threats right around the time Palin started using the (also misleading) phrase "palling around with terrorists" to describe Obama. The NEWSWEEK author carefully chose words that do not directly imply blame or causation, but merely call attention to a serious and disturbing correlation of occurrences.
The choice of words is important. Let's try to keep Current.tv reality-centric. Reality is our strongest, and only, defense against those who choose to distort it. The moment we give up on reality is the moment we give in to shouting matches.
Palin can't be "blamed" for the death threats, but her turns of phrase did add fuel to the fires of angry people everywhere. It is difficult to argue against that claim, and thus it will be harder for her to shake.

Staff punished me for making similar remarks ("the Klan no longer wears white sheets") about the new KKK, before the election was over. I think that it is time that people take a real hard and honest look at how racially divided this country really is. Pawn shops all over America, sold a record number of guns and ammo the day after the election was held.
This is terribly frightening, and it is not the past or the future. It is the "here and now".

Once they began constantly criticizing the media for wanting to know something about Palin (because she was unknown) they began a war of words with the one device that gets you elected, the media. While agree that movin' on is the order of the day, I don't think it's ok to just simply "forget" how divisively and nastily the Republican campaign was conducted. Don't think that simply because the campaign is over and Obama (and we) were victorious, that those who were so inflamed and incited are just "OK" now. The hatred spewed by McCain/Palin wasn't of their creation - it exists! They simply tried to capitalize on it. It hasn't gone away - it's still out there, alive and well, and now more riled up than ever. They, and especially She, took full advantage of the bigotry and fear out there - this must not be forgotten or forgiven. It was an insult to us all. Remembering, with a determination to keep moving forward, with a determination to be part of the change, keeps us focused and united.

McCain did not pick her. By his own admission, he did not even talk to her until two days before her candidacy was announced. The Republican Party picked her. He had very, very little to do with his own election.
The Republican Party knew they were going to lose the election. They needed someone to hold together the core Republican vote. All of her speeches, all of her accusations, all of her debate answers and behavior was aimed directly at the Republican core, period. She even said aloud, on national TV during a debate, I will not answer the questions you ask, I will talk directly to Joe Sixpack. She winked, she glibbed, she courted the most ignorant of people in her folksy, down home way, just as she was hired to do.
Her ONLY purpose was, and still is, to hold the core together so they have something to build upon in 2012. It was a brilliant move in the face of a landslide, actually, mostly because it worked.
64% of Republicans think she was a scapegoat and is Presidential material. 75% of them want her to run in 2012. She did her job. She inflamed the core radical racist, gun-toting, bible thumping, ant-gay, anti-abortion, ignorant Republican core. And they vote!
Listen to what they are saying at www.redstate.com... this was a brilliant move and the only move they had considering they lost this election long before it even started.
The real problem is Palin herself, agreed. She believes her press. She believes she has a mandate, and she is golden. They picked a woman of pure, unadulterated ego for a good reason... she will stand there and believe the very filth that comes out of her mouth... a perfect Republican.
If you think she will go away, you are crazy. She was a calculated move. She is not as much human as much as she is a machine. She has lived her life a beautiful woman, in front of a camera her entire life, in a state full of redneck, horny, lonely, macho mindless men, and few women. Her ego is a product of her upbringing. Her chosen profession is geared towards stroking that enflamed ego. She has no conscious. She will run, and she will lose, but if you think she has done damage now, wait for 2012.
The Republican Party started two unjust wars, raped the constitution, stole a serious amount of our liberites, made a few hundred men billionares at the expense of the world economy... do you think they honestly care about Obamas life? Seriously?

I don't recall a single instance of anyone forcibly entering the home of a U.S. citizen at gun point to steal a child happening under Bush. It did happen under Clinton, with his full support. I also don't recall any government agencies over the last eight years rolling out tanks and gassing a compound of woman and children -- about 70 children being kill by suffocation in the process.
