My name is Khalid Nabil Al-Ajil. I was born in Des Moines, Iowa. My mother is white and was raised by a Vietnam Veteran. Being a military baby, she was raised all across the mid-west, and actually born in Guam. My father is from Kuwait and was raised by a pearl diver. For the longest time I had never truly felt American, even after the first Bush saved Kuwait in the first Gulf War. To be American it seemed to me you had to be white, speak English, and be a Christian. It wasn't until Obama was officially named the President- Elect and gave his speech that I felt this fire of American pride burn inside.

That is an inspirational view at how someone w/less can accomplish so much. Many people in our lifetime only know their limitations yet don't take advantage of the opportunities right in front of them, their own talent. Courage like this, to make something out of seemingly impossible situations, is what America needs.

They really look like their mom too. What a great family. You cant fake stuff like that. No other candidate or president has ever had such a true loving family. It reaffirms that we made the right choice. Long live the Obamas!

That really was a touching window into his upbringing and family. It really is such an amazing turn of events and such an inspiration for mixed race Americans - so many of whom have felt unaccepted by either group. My girlfriend is mixed and shares such stories of uncertainty and identity crisis. It was amazing to watch Obama's acceptance speech with her on election night. She was filled with light and pride over her mixed origins in a way that she had never in her life experienced. Beautiful.

what a beautiful story and it is so much like many of us. We are all shades of black, white, red, tan....I learned that in a study in my own families "geneology". So it reminds us all that we can do things, we can rise above whatever life throws us. MLK said it best (and yes I am white (mostly) along with some French, English and whatever else lies in my family's past) MLK: "It is not the color of our skin, but the content of our character".
That was so long ago, and yet we still have so much further to go. Lets not quit or give up when the road is rough. Lose the hate and it should all be downhill if we can manage that.
