Bin Laden 'cut off from al-Qaeda'

The CIA says Osama Bin Laden is isolated from the day-to-day operations of al-Qaeda, but that the organisation is still the greatest threat to the US.

CIA director Michael Hayden said the Saudi militant was probably hiding in the tribal area of north-west Pakistan.

Gen Hayden said that Bin Laden was "putting a lot of energy into his own survival" and that his capture remained the US government's top priority.

But he warned that al-Qaeda continued to grow in Africa and the Middle East.

In a speech to the Atlantic Council on Thursday, Gen Hayden said: "[Bin Laden] is putting a lot of energy into his own survival, a lot of energy into his own security."

    • "I am still laughing about the innocence of those some reporters and producers saying Osama Bin Laden is already dead... besides, they did not analyze everything because there are some fake documents that are being thrown away to deceived enemies even those rivals about their true identity... Thinking the truth about Osama Bin Laden... i would say that he is just shy knowing that there are people who observed his situation even the combats he is being within... gossips can kill and gossips can also survive a country even a community against terrorism.."-JB

    • How do you eliminate a narcissist? You go around and tell everyone that he is not important, he is not in charge, and that he is a wash up. Then when the arrogant individual decides to set the record straight...oh look, its a bird, a plane, nope, a Predator with two Hell Fire missiles.

I didn't say it wasn't organized, I said it's not really an organization.

They're like the KKK. There are various chapters that are loosely affiliated with one another, but there is no central body.

There is no one person you can go after that would kill the group and even if there was, it would just pop right back up again.

It takes steady police work and ideological warfare to defeat groups like this. You have to turn the people and foreign governments against them, cut off their hiding places.

Is it possible to have a discussion with you without you freaking out?

Yes, you can talk to a "liberal" and actually agree on certain things. It's amazing, I know.

Zawahiri's death or capture could potentially be a major ideological blow to their movement, but his managerial role is localized and not in any way essential. He could be replaced easily, even if his replacement wasn't as effective.

But even then, you never know with these people. Depending on how he dies and how it is spun, it might invigorate the movement as he could be seen as a "martyr" for the cause.

Part of what fucked over Zawahiri in Egypt was that using violence against civilians turned the populace against him and so it was just a matter of time before the police bagged him.

If the U.S. is serious about fighting terrorism and al-Qaeda, that's the way to go. We should cultivate Islamic preachers who denounce violence and terror, improve infrastructure and quality of life, train local police and espionage agencies in effective counter-terror tactics and improve our global image and geopolitical game (which must include, at the very least, how we treat Israel in our rhetoric) to create the image (or the illusion) that we are a trustworthy and reliable ally.

Who knows, maybe we'll do some good along the way.

    • I wonder how they know this? What are they basing their claim on? His lack of activity?

Not that it matters, it's not like there is any central head to Al-Qaeda.

It's a movement, not an organization.

The myth that it's some super-organized group like S.P.E.C.T.R.E. out of James Bond is part of what keeps us from effectively fighting it.

    • i can't help but wonder why this is transpiring after the election. almost as if the administration is trying to tie up loose ends so that obama doesn't engage in a manhunt only to realize that bin laden has been dead for years. or perhaps catch him only to discover that he wasn't involved in 9/11. something shady, of course.

      kastism,
you are right, it is just like 1984. Keep him alive so we can justify our actions and pretend like we aren't fighting a hopeless cause. Maybe he is alive though or maybe they will still be trying to catch him 100 years from now. Hate is a terrible thing but unrelenting pride, even when you know you are wrong, is worse.

    • I agree with the fact that he is probably dead. I mean if they know all this, then how can't they go get him. I wonder when history will figure out what is really going on.

    • Yes, that is what the CIA said yesterday. And they are trying to find him and put him out of his misery. Or at least find him.

Of course he faked his death or died a few years back. I don't know which.

    • BULLSHIT

      I call bullshit.

so they know where he is huh?
and they know intimate details about his day to day
      operations huh?

      and they will not attack?
      they will not bomb?

they are bombing villages of innocent civilians.
they are murdering thousands of people.
but they will not attack the person they are so called
after? they just monitor his situation?

      BULLSHIT!

how stupid do you think we are? really...
