Jonestown Cult Survivor

CHARMOSH
In 1971, cult leader Jim Jones established the headquarters of the Peoples Temple on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco, CA. The building is now a US Post Office, and a local survivor of the cult's 909 member mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana in 1978 remembers what it was like in the early days of the Peoples Temple.

    • One of the strangest and most horrific events you'll ever read about. Definitely worth looking into if you're not familiar with the entire story.

    • I was 14 and remember when this happened. I had gone to church every Sunday and most Wednesdays my entire life and had never really thought about the things I was taught in church critically. I accepted it as truth because the adults around me did.

I didn't stop going to church after Jonestown - I just started thinking and questioning. I sought out diverse viewpoints and then decided for myself what I believed.

I'd bet it had that kind of effect on a lot of people.
It goes to show that good can come from even the most tragic things.

    • Most of the people were murdered. Almost all the kids were injected into the mouth. It wasn't like kool-aid and everyone took it willingly.  Saying he could have been a leader sounds like your giving him props lj.   I hope that evil twisted freak jones is getting up *** from the devil himself.

    • I'm an SFSU student studying in Australia and last night a documentary about the Peoples Temple aired. I didn't watch it from the beginning so I missed the introduction. I didn't know it was started in SF and when i get back I plan on visiting the Post office. This is a piece of Sf history I'm sure not many people know about, unless they are born and raised in SF or have done some research on Jonestown. Thanks for making this pod and keep up the good work.

    • JIM JONES COULD HAVE BEEN A LEADER OF MAN IF HE HAVE GONE THE RIGHT WAY. BUT INSTEAD HE DECIDED NOT ONLY HIS FAITH BUT THE FAITH OF HUNDREDS SIMPLY BY HAVING CONTROL OVER THEM. THE ONES WHO SURVIVED WERE VERY LUCKY AND WITHOUT THEIR SURVIVAL, SOME OF THE REAL HORROR FIRST HAND WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN KNOWN.
