Most recent reports claim that 78 have been killed, at least a further 200 injured, and a number of hostages had been seized at two hotels.

A few days ago a heard a news on current about a pirate ship that was destroy by the Indian navy.
Keep in mind this group came by sea , i wonder if this has something to do with piracy at sea.
Also we have to keep in mind that in India their is a war betwen Hindus and Muslims and this has nothing to do with 911, and what about the Cristian Faith in India if You try to convert people into Crisitian faith you are in trouble , they will kill you , simple as that.

I love how every single post on this has made the assumption that this is the work of Islamic terrorists when the evidence for that is slim at best for the moment. Let me for a moment point out some of the facts as they have been reported on CNN.
1: All of the locations attacked where within one kilometer of water and a landing spot for the dingies used.
2: The head of not just the anti-terrorist departments but also the local police heads where targeted.
3: While there was some targeting of people who carried American, British, and Israeli passports Only 3-6 Americans have been killed or injured as of my writing this.4: The Indian Navy has reported capturing a Pakistani shipping vessel they say was stolen a month or so ago and is what these attackers used to launch their assault on the city.
Now it seems to me that given that there has been a huge increase in Pirate activity over the last 6 months or so (there was even a Vanguard episode on it recently here on Current) it seems very conceivable that this is a raid by pirates. First if this is a terrorist attack targeting American, British, and Israeli citizens they are doing a piss poor job of it as only 6 of the 200 or so killed now were American or even foreigners is nothing to brag about. It seems more like this is an old fashioned bait and switch, if some one wanted to do a lot of damage like a terrorist you don't roll through with guns and grenades you roll up with high explosives strapped to yourself and or vehicle, if however you want to commit robbery on a major scale you send in teams of men to reek havoc on several locations that drag on for as much as a day or more while your compatriots are lifting all the gold bullion or what ever else is of value at several major banks. And this strategy is not new it was successfully employed by the Viking raiders and Pirates operating in throughout the world's known history. And finally this previously unheard of organization using a vaguely Islamic name is exactly the cover a criminal organization would use to cover its tracks, you would not want the authorities to know you are just a pirate crime syndicate so you side track them with this Islamic terrorist rhetoric and the media and every one else is primed to eat it up. And that is exactly what appears to be happening here.

Since we suspect they were Muslims, and since we doubt the Pakistanis can be categorical and convincing enough to thwart Indian demands, we suspect that we will be deep into a crisis within the next few days, very shortly after the situation on the ground clarifies itself.

by now, anyone following this story has already heard of the "deccan mujahideen"..
i'm not sure who is more foolish.. the one who came up with such a stereotypical "terrorist" name.. or the one who so easily defines the situation by a label..
india is a big place with a long history.. hindus, muslims, xtians, sikhs.. lots of factions within each.. some obviously more hostile than others.. but traditional acts of violence have usually been associated with particular issues or specific agendas that were points of contention.. there is often little doubt as to who has done what and why it was done..
but these more recent types of attacks, including the previous mumbai train bombs.. they are random and pointless.. designed to do nothing more than inflict fear and hate while causing social tension.. both in india and abroad..
the "terrorist" act itself is not the true objective.. its the misguided knee-jerk reaction that reinforces their behavior..
it is very saddening that there are people who have lost their life in such a manner.. the result of unnecessary violence and aggression..
meanwhile, ignorant people will continue to be taken advantage of by something as simple as a name..

Where would terrorism be without CNN and the BBC to endlessly pump up its significance?
And how many times can these guys insert the phrase "Al Queda" per minute - when there is no evidence currently that links the CIA creation to this attack at all?
When the news of this attack broke last night in Europe, where I am at the moment, this was the ONLY news you could get on CNN and BBC European channels all night.
The deaths and injuries are, of course, tragic. The disruption to Mumbai's tourist areas significant.
But does this story merit non-stop all day and night coverage?
Listening to the BBC last night, you could hear the anchorwoman leading the Indian security forces expert she was interviewing.
"This is very significant, isn't it?"
"Yes, very."
"And this shows a much higher level of sophistication than we've ever seen in India before."
"Yes, indeed."
"And this is a serious cause for concern all over the world because it indicates the terrorists have developed a whole new level of effectiveness."
"Yes, you are quite right."
And on and on and on for hours making sure this tactical mole hill was blown up into a Himalayan-sized mountain.
OK, some armed nut jobs got together, shot innocent people and threw some bombs. Now they're holding hostages.
That's it. That's the whole story. Repeating it over and over and over again is the REAL terrorism.

I agree with you to a point. If the terrorists didn't get that much press, then maybe they wouldn't be doing public executions and distributing the video through the Internet. But on the other hand, we also have to blame the system that gives these people the drive to recruit in massive numbers. For example, in Syria, the men who are attracted to radicalism tend to be the ones who fell through the system's cracks: uneducated, lacking trade skills, poor, and HOPELESS. Instead of letting al-Qaeda (or other terrorist groups) give these men hope, their respective governments need to recognize the need to grab a hold of these men through institutional education programs to instill hope that they, too, can succeed in making their futures in just measures.

By the way, this morning i watched the news, and there was this journalist asking an eyewitness what the offenders looked like, and he described them as 'typical Indian people, 25-30yrs old'.
Then the journalist specifically asked whether they had beards or not.
Somehow i find that to be very ironic and imo tells a lot about the current state the world is in.

It's terrible that these attacks are taking place. I hope the hostages will be allright. I don't know enough about the situation in India to comment further on who's to blame, but you sure have to be pretty desperate to resort to this kind of violence.

People like to put all the blame on the current US president, but people need to realize that events in such a short period of time don't exactly create problems that have been brewing for centuries. Obama is going to occupy the white house for the next 4 or 8 years and events are going to happen like today throughout his presidency.
Around the world people will still hold signs that say "Down with America" "Down with Obama" Can we really blame Obama? Can we really blame Bush? Or should we blame Clinton because Bush inherited Clinton's problems? Why didn't Clinton deal with those Islamic extremists? No, let's blame Bush Senior, hell, maybe we should go back to Washington himself. You get the point.
We have to realize that the world is a big place, filled with countless religions, ethnicity's, and ideologies, and it's been that way for thousands of years. No one man or administration can undo all that, nor should he be blamed for everything. We must realize that the world has always been violent, and many people actually prefer it that way. We should all strive for the world we would like to be a part of, but we also need to be realists and see the world for what it is, instead of looking to place all blame on the current sitting president.

In the current podcast about the Mumbai train attack in 2006, a man commented that if the terrorists have an issue with the government, then they should take it up with the government - killing innocent people is not the answer. While CNN & Fox were reporting on the terrorist attack in India, MSMBC was talking about Obama's cabinet selections. Yeah. I laughed and changed the channel.
People are thinking about how to buy groceries, medicine and maybe get a Christmas gift for their child, if they are lucky. Or this week, are the kids young enough to realize this is a chicken, not a turkey?
Times are hard. And it's prime for terrorists to take advantage. Fox pointed it out. I am glad they did. The other news stations should have with the threat level NY has been over with the bold terrorist threat to it's subway system. Fox reported on that, did other channels?
Had CNN did this, you would not have said anything. Because it's Fox news, you have a Pavlovian response to bite at the TV. Sad. Even liberals should be open minded at times, and know what is helpful. Being an ostrich isn't the best idea right now.

When I hear about a news story, I try to gather information from as many sources as possible. With all of the ways we have to get info this days, I would be stupid to get all of my news from one source (i.e. CNN) I have seen a pattern from Fox news that is not matched by any other news source that claims to be "fair and balanced" I'm just calling it how I see it. I am very liberal and I actually tuned in BBC News when I found out. I was looking at other channels and noticed the same thing as you- CNN and Fox were the only ones reporting the attakcs. I was really surprised that MSNBC didn't mention it till later.
If you want the latest updates, I would watch BBC because they get their info first and the American news stations report the same thing 15+ minutes later.

What about all of the intolerance we show to peaceful Muslims in this country? The overwhelming majority of Muslims are peaceful. We must not judge a religion by what we see from it's extremes. Many of the people killed in these attacks were in fact Muslim. There were muslim American citizens killed on 9/11. There are Christian extremists as well. (I.E. John Hagee-McCain supporter) who use a rhetoric of intolerance. We are not fighting Islam. We are fighting extremisim on all fronts, whether Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or any other irrational fundamentalism.

Sontag is talking about Islamic Terrorists basically. He goes on in the same breath to say that worshiping Allah is fine, but killing others in the process should not be withstood by anyone. Islamic and non-Islamic people around the world should have the same opinion there if it is a religion of PEACE. Really. How America (actually the world) "fights" really has a wide range of non-violent choices.
What I want to highlight in what he said was a phrase that is the cause for the violence: "... never allowing for inter-faith tolerance," Most of the violence is due to religious intolerance.
Are all of you defending Islamic terrorism? That is what was discussed here. And what YOU ALL DID, with the exception of Damnneargenious. Read carefully, this by no means talks about the majority of the western Islamic worshipers that we have in America.
Please think before you foam at the mouth when someone has an idea that might not be 100% "politically correct".

For your information, Sontag, Christians have used their religion for centuries (if not millenia) to justify all sorts of wrondoing. They justified slavery by using passages out of the bible. Hitler used Christianity to justify his actions against those he slaughtered during WWII. Look at any white-supremacist or KKK website and they will outright tell you that they believe they are "Christian soldiers". Many beliefs of hate groups are based in christianity. I am by no means saying I support ANY extremist principles. You should just realize that there are fanatics on all sides.

If the peaceful muslims are too chicken shit to purge them from their midst then someone else has to do it for them. The problem does not go away just because the weak bury their heads in the sand.

I have been watching the coverage on this on various news channels. Many of the channels (CNN, MSNBC, IBN) have showed a lot of journalistic integrity by not jumping to conclusions and inciting unwarranted fear. But leave it to Faux News (the sly Fox) to use former NY governer Pataki to somehow compare this to 9/11. They are saying things such as "This proves that we aren't safe here in America" and "How soon before we have an attack of this kind here?"...Don't be blinded by the fear tactics people
