You ask for capitalism and consumerism and this is what you get. Congratulations to the Walton family. Isn't it time for someone to post the traditional " well, this is still the greatest country in the world" tripe?

It seems many do not understand the purpose behind a "Black Friday" The purpose is to get rid of the old stocks and to make room for new stocks. It's almost like a New Years for companies. Not only that, but retailers are trying to make up for financial loss accrued from the rest of the year (January to November).
Also, Black Friday has become an indicator of the economy and how well it is doing.
An accounting class will explain this further and more in depth.

Long Island. What a tragedy. I grieve for the people that were affected by the violence, for the people that were there and didn't care also. My heart goes out for the injured and the family of the person who died. I hope that changes the way people think there. (see comments above if you don't understand.)

Very graphic, but if this stays online, it's what happened at the scene. Explains my comment above. No one would give the person mouth to mouth even.

They didn't use a defibrillator in all that time, but what was probably worse is that the CPR without breaths, won't keep a person's brain alive. The whole point of keeping the blood pumping is to distribute the O2 that was added via the breath.
Barring tremendous internal damage, that life might have been lost by poor first emergency care.

I really have no words to accurately describe this (but I'll try anyway.)It's horrible and sad, disgusting and pathetic, selfish and heartless. I can't even begin to understand how these people will sleep at night, but I doubt anyone, from the masses to Wal-Mart itself, feels like they are responsible. For shame, shame shame.

I work at walmart, and I had to be to work at 4:30 this morning. (Like the past four years) when the clock hit 5, it was frightening - we had two fights break out over TV's that were on sale in my store. This will sound crass I know, but it's really hard to view customers as people when you see how they act on days like this.

I am so ashamed of my country! We gorge ourselves to the point that we fall asleep, and alot of us it's just a time that we get together to hate each other all over again. This time of year is supposed to be a happy one, but it has totally changed from what it used to be, What kind of holiday is the man's family going to have? All because a mob of greedy people had to get into a corporate monster to buy second rate chinese goods.. SHAME ON US.... When will we get tired of the rat race?

This is a practice we are creating as a culture to feed our economy, just like halloween, Christmas, easter, (etc). Its fucking ridiculous and people are just as ridiculous or more for buying into it. No one should ever die, or miscarry, because some idiot wanted a new Xbox. This is disappointing.

Sad how so many in our society are consumed by possessions. Do we really need to keep up with The Joneses? Do we really need to be waiting at a store that opens at midnight or 4am to get the "deal of a lifetime" on something that will either be obsolete or broken in 8 months? Stories like this put such a damper on the holiday season.

As I read this story and look at this photo, I wonder what is going through the minds of those people? Is it something like "I'm gonna buy a ton of shit and I can't wait!" or is it something like "Oh lord I have $35 dollars and 8 presents to buy, please oh please let this not be another disappointing, shitty Christmas for my family."
Don't be so quick to judge.

I called my mother today to tell her how appalled I was with the rampant madness over items that will become valueless and obsolete.
