The US Federal Reserve said Monday it had authorized China Construction Bank, a leading Chinese state bank, to operate in the United States.

CCB is the second-largest bank in China, with total assets of approximately 1.1 trillion dollars, it noted.

The US central bank recalled that China Construction Bank Corporation (CCB) is 57.0 percent owned by the Chinese state.

    • Yep saves shipping costs, Bush and company can just transfer the treasury to the bank now. Since we are paying billions in intrest alone to them weekly. It is much more convient. Its a wonder they don't come and buy the Blackhouse. That is probably next. But this is a free enterprise country and all is fair in love and war. So they have the same right as anyone else. It is just scuh a shame Bush and Co. put this country so far in debt that we owe them so much money, but I don't blame the Chinese I blame Bush and this Congress.

    • That's about as stupid as what the Illinois Governor was just indicted for. Except he at least thought he was doing it in private.

    • I did not see anyone indicate they were joking about robbing the bank. How troubling that lordsbassman, alphaomega, pokesmot have each indicated such an intent. Not to sound like Dwight Shrute, but people's lives have been disrupted by federal authorities over less. You'd better recant those statements.

    • Why worry, they already own your ports and hi-ways,and soon your car industry, but if it was my country i wouldn't be happy at all.A communist country should not be aloud to own anything in a democracy (well.sort of a democracy, actually its not a democracy at all)

    • Add Bank of India to that list of other nationally own banks. As I said, this has little significance. International banks have a long history of having branches in New York. Remember, the UN and countless embassies have a presence in the city.

    • Whats he fuss about? Come on people it is just a bank. And after all, it were mainly US administrations that advocated the free flow of money and srvices around the world.
Oh and by the way, you also have the Deutsche Bank, the Dresdener Bank, the Bank of Scotland, the Crédit Agricole and many other foreign banks in your counntry. And as most of your money is already owned by the chinese government, it doesn't really change a thing if they are opening an outlet on american soil...

    • I'm not sure if this is good or bad. But when you consider that, after WW II, we spent trillions fighting communism and now a communist country is opening a bank in the US, one has to wonder whether or not we've stepped through the looking glass.

    • Lordbassman,
How can we steal what's already ours??

Does this mean that pretty soon we'll have a cool chinese coin with a hole in the middle? I love those things.

    • This is no big deal people. There are already a lot of foreign banks with branch offices in the United States. In fact, a large number do business all over the US and not just a sole branch in NYC.

HSBC is all over the US and it is a foreign bank. There is nothing telling you that you must bank at a non-US bank. It is simply an aspect of our global economy and the need to have more lending options.

    • This isn't so disastrous everyone. Chinese people have been able to purchase and use the facilities of the U.S. central bank with the purchase of bonds and such. This, if anything, is a smart thing. Having more stable banking institutions in our economy right now is one of the best ways for us to maintain stability on the whole. It shouldn't/doesn't make a difference about whether or not the bank is from outside of our borders. If such a move can improve the conditions of our unstable economy, and thus improve the conditions for our U.S. citizens in a harsh economic climate, then it's a good thing.
