Out by June: UK plans Iraq withdrawal

Britain's six-year occupation of south Iraq will begin drawing to a close in March, and the last troops will leave Basra by June, a senior defence source disclosed yesterday.

But instead of handing over to Iraqi authorities, the British will be replaced at their Basra airport base by a large force of US troops, who will set up their own headquarters there, the source revealed.

    • Let the Iraqi people fend for their selves, what better honor for them to get to build it back up. If they wanna sell it it's on them, this is over due

    • Anybody want the job to be the last American soldier on the ground in Iraq?? Anybody? crickets.... Jan. 1 our status for forces agreement changes with Iraq. No more immunity for contractors. We could see a dramatic reduction in the influence, good and bad, on our troops in Iraq. The damage these contractors have inflicted on this country and it's people may not be un-fuckable. Potentially, a dramatic reduction in the number of contractors in iraq could cut our operational troop and security numbers buyas much as one half. If the cintractors up and leave, our boys are in trouble. pray for them.
