Sex addiction affects 3% to 5% of all Americans, according to the latest estimates. The disorder has come into the spotlight, thanks to
celebrities like Russell Brand and David Duchovny, who checked into rehabilitation centres in the US to get treated.

Today there are more than eight clinics in the US offering specialist treatment to those who suffer from the disorder.

The Life Healing Centre (LHC) is in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and it offers two sex addiction programs: one for men and the other for women.

Addiction specialist Rob Weiss, who created the sex addiction programme at LHC, said: "Sex addicts are people who lose control over healthy sexual choices. They say things to themselves like, 'I'm not going to go to that place for sex' or 'I'm not going to see that person for sex' but they continue to do it anyway.

They show behaviors that are common to all addicts and they show consequences and thinking that is common to all addicts."

Psychologist and author Patrick Carnes estimates three to 5% of Americans suffer from the disorder. Their behavior can vary from compulsively watching porn online to visiting prostitutes at every opportunity.

Andy is 31 and is enrolled in the program. He claims to have been a sex addict for years. He said: "I was compulsive self-pleasuring, using pornography, going to prostitutes and having people sexually abuse and torture me for my pleasure."

His addiction got so out of control that he was unable to walk for a month after a dominatrix severely sexually abused him at his request.

    • Christ, so that means Playboy, Hustler, the entire porn industry, most current hip-hop artists, a handful of slutty "rockstars" and much of the mainstream advertising and pop-tart celebrities are all either A.) sex addicts themselves B.) enablers C.) the sexual equivalent of drug dealers.

      Nice.

      Well, that certainly explains things.

If it feels good, it must be good...at least in the short-term right?

    • I would say that number is inverse. More like 95% of Americans are addicted to sex.

I am mentally ill and have no sex drive anymore. I am one of the few 5% not addicted to sex.

    • I personally know several people struggling with sex addiction, and it bothers me to no end that so many people out there think it's a joke. These people are in real psychological pain, and their loved ones feel the burden, too.

An addiction to anything is debilitating. Alcohol, tanning beds, shopping centers, World of Warcraft, and sex... all of these things are widely available to the masses, but not everyone abuses them to the point where it controls or harms their lives. For those who have developed an addiction, they should be offered help and should NOT be ridiculed for a very real problem.

Nobody wants to ridicule and judge, I personally know somebody who can't help himself, you do not have to go far, look at Clinton! But, there is a very narrow line between the people who like sex and sex addicts! And it is so easy for people to start labeling.

    • Oh no, sex addicts? Only 5%? C-mon, we love sex and we love to think about it! And as a matter of fact we love David Duchovny in "Californication". We can talk and talk, but the bottom line is, do not be so quick to judge and put labels.

    • Leonidis:

Addiction is a dependence on something that is not necessary to sustain life, but is carried out to the point where it controls or negatively alters one's life. We need food, water, oxygen, the sun, sleep, and some level of exercise to survive. Working out so much that it affects one's job performance, personal relationships, or endangers their health is an addiction. Sex is needed for procreation, but one does not need to masturbate to online porn for several hours a day in order to sustain the species. It is then an addiction. And the pot smoking... yeah, that's not a necessity to live either.

There. Hopefully you've been enlightened. No need to be condescending.

Miis islek what people need is the feeling of feeling loved or good. If jacking off on-line is doing it for you at that particular time in your life than it is an addiction because you say it is because it isnt neccessary to sustain life?

    • nymphomania is a type of OCD. there is a story of a woman who had to quit her job because she was having sex about 30 times a day for multiple days and couldn't get in for work.

i think 5% is way too high if the story is talking about pure sex addiction. and 5% is way too low if it is taking into account hyper sex drives.

    • im at a loss on this issue, how can a human instinct be called an addiction? Ill have to agree with seeker561;
I think its our "society" that has numbed all our instincts to its acceptable level. (LCD) We tell teens to abstain just when their natural hormones are at their highest...
Sex addiction?, thats like saying you have a breathing addiction! gasp, gasp!

    • robzbuzz:

If you got a dopamine rush from breathing then YES you could become addicted.

Breathing, heart beating, your kidneys and liver processing your blood, these actions do not produce dopamine.

We need to stop TELLING teens. "Don't do that because I said so" will never work when the parents continue "Black Hole" behavior.

Truth is the only way. We have lost our way for the last oh 10,000 years plus.

    • Apocolypto - Good story to better understand our hunger.

Man sat alone, drenched deep in sadness. And all the animals drew near to him and said,

"We do not like to see you so sad. Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it."

The Man said, "I want to have good sight."

The vulture replied, "You shall have mine."

The Man said, "I want to be strong."

The jaguar said, "You shall be strong like me."

Then the Man said, "I long to know the secrets of the earth."

The serpent replied, "I will show them to you."

And so it went with all the animals. And when the Man had all the gifts that they could give, he left.

Then the owl said to the other animals, "Now the Man knows much, he'll be able to do many things. Suddenly I am afraid."

The deer said, "The Man has all that he needs. Now his sadness will stop."

But the owl replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never fill. It is what makes him sad and what makes him want. He will go on taking and taking, until one day the World will say, 'I am no more and I have nothing left to give.'"

    • Wow, I am almost amazed at the responses to this issue. I believe this number is wrong and this issue is much bigger then we realize. The last numbers from the UK were much higher.

Not sure if everyone understands the science here.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which is directly tied to our reward centers. Eating, sleeping, and other various personal requirements are tied to the dopamine reward.

Drugs such as cocaine and nicotine will increase the amount of dopamine to the brain.

When you have an orgasm you also have a rush of dopamine followed by a rush of prolactin which inhibits dopamine. So in essence right after your orgasm you get the reward and then it is taken away.

If you have ever had any addiction in your life there is a good possibility your reward is tied to dopamine. So anything which gives the body this reward neurotransmitter can become an addiction.

I wonder how many of the inmates were sent by their less horny partners?

Spec-tacular, make me lick you from yo neck
To yo back, then ya, shiverin, tgue deliverin
Chills up that spine, that ass is mine
Skip the wine and the candlelight, no Cristal tonight
If its alright with you, we fuckin (that's alright)
Deja vu, the blunts sparked, finger fuckin in the park
      Pissy off Bacardi Dark
Remember when I used to play between yo legs
You begged for me to stop because you know where it would head
      Straight to yo mother's bed
At the Mariott, we be lucky if we find a spot
Next to yo sister, damn I really missed the

      Jimenagamio,

Pop culture is a great example of sexual addiction. You can see from the words of most rap and pop songs that this is not what it seems.

If sex as an act is your reward then you are entering a black hole. There is a good story from Mel Gibson Apocolypto which is great to understand our hunger and how it can destroy use.

Man sat alone, drenched deep in sadness. And all the animals drew near to him and said,

"We do not like to see you so sad. Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it."

Yep, "sex addiction", what a load of BS.

If you want too much sex, you're addicted to it.

If you don't want sex enough, you have a low sex drive.

Isn't it odd that the same people that create these ideas don't offer much as to what the recommended daily allowance of sex is?

These ideas are products of society's fascination with scientism.

      It's not bullshit.

      Addiction is a mental disorder.

If someone is addicted to something that is damaging themselves and others, it doesn't matter what they're addicted to, they need to be treated like an addict, and get the proper type of help.
